Newspapers: The strange survival of ink

Newspapers have escaped cataclysm by becoming leaner and more focused

“PRINT is going to live longer than people think,” asserts Mathias Dopfner, the boss of Axel Springer. Perhaps it will in central Europe. The publisher of Bild and Die Welt recently recorded the most profitable first quarter in its history. The profit margin on its German national newspapers is a startling 27%. The firm is expanding into Poland. If newspapers are in crisis, Mr Dopfner says, he likes crisis.

A year ago the mere survival of many newspapers seemed doubtful. It had become clear that the young, in particular, were getting much of their news online. Readers were flitting from story to story, rarely paying. Advertising too was moving online, but not to newspapers’ websites. Rather, it was being swallowed by search engines. The classified-ad market was ravaged by free listings websites such as Craigslist. A deep recession, received wisdom had it, would surely finish off newspapers, which have high fixed costs in the form of journalists and printing presses. …

Comparing rich-country budget deficits

MOST rich-country governments will struggle with huge budget deficits in 2010. A decade ago small surpluses were common in many rich countries (although not in Japan), but these are long gone. As economies pull out of recession, government spending will have to be cut and, with luck, tax revenues will gradually rise again. But paying off debts will be an enormous and painful task, which could also prolong the pain inflicted by the economic slump. On Monday February 1st Barack Obama made a start for America, unveiling his budget for 2011 which proposes cutting or consolidated 120 programmes, with savings expected to total $20 billion.

Self-erasing paper: Fade to red

A way to write messages that will vanish spontaneously

INVISIBLE ink has a lengthy history. As early as the first century AD, Pliny the Elder wrote that the sap of a tithymalus plant could be used to render a message invisible to prying eyes. More recently, legions of schoolchildren have penned invisible messages using lemon juice. And to prove that even these days the stuff is not just a childish prank, part of the evidence that convicted Rangzieb Ahmed, an al-Qaeda operative in Britain, last year was that he had an address book with the telephone numbers of his confederates written in invisible ink.

What, though, of the opposite? Instead of something that starts off invisible and is then rendered legible (usually by the application of heat), how about a form of writing that is readable to begin with and then fades to invisibility? Such an ink, suggests Bartosz Grzybowski of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, could have all sorts of applications, from the obvious one of expunging a sensitive message after a few hours, to bus and train tickets that expire automatically after, say, a month. Dr Grzybowski thinks he has managed to make such stuff. …
