SEC Probing Insider Trading in HP-3Com Deal: Report

A jump in options call trading for 3Com in the hours leading up to HPs announcement of is $2.7 billion bid for networking company 3Com is prompting SEC regulators to investigate whether there was insider trading, according to Bloomberg. In addition, 3Com faces two shareholder lawsuits from investors who say HPs offer is too low. HP is hoping to adding 3Com to its networking business to better compete with Cisco.

IBM, Intel Executives Involved in Ongoing Insider Trading Case

The $25 million insider trading scandal that touched such IT heavyweights as AMD, IBM and Intel has now led to charges against six people from Silicon Valley and Wall Street. The case continues to roil both coasts. Federal prosecutors say executives from IBM, Intel and McKinsey Co. gave nonpublic information on such companies as AMD, Sun Microsystems, Google, PolyCom and Akamai to two directors at two hedge funds, Galleon Management and New Castle Funds, which used the information to make their trades. Most of the companies are cooperating with investigators, and some – including Intel, McKinsey and Akamai – reportedly are conducting their own internal probes. Intel also put Rajiv Goel, an executive with its treasury department, on administrative leave after the charges were brought against him and five others. Head of IBM Hardware Unit Charged in Insider Trading Scheme

Robert Moffat, senior vice president in charge of IBM’s hardware business, is one of seven people named by the SEC as part of an insider trading scheme that illegally netted $25 million. Moffat and Intel Treasury executive Rajiv Goel are among those accused of giving insider information on such companies as Google, AMD and Sun Microsystems to two managers at New York-based hedge funds, who allegedly used the information in their trades.
