Apple Sues HTC Over iPhone Interface, Hardware

Apple filed a lawsuit against HTC, claiming that the device-maker violated 20 of its patents related to iPhone interface, architecture and hardware. This represents the latest patent-infringement battle for Apple, which is currently locked in similar legal maneuverings with Nokia and Kodak. HTC demonstrated several smartphones at January’s Mobile World Congress that featured a full touch screen reminiscent of the iPhone’s, and Apples lawsuit could focus on those similarities. Companies often avoid patent-infringement lawsuits through cross-licensing deals, but can also resort to legal action in order to meet broader business goals.

SAP will release a new version of its SAP BusinessObjects Explorer platform in November, allowing for accelerated enterprise search and what it says is an improved user interface. The updated version of BusinessObjects Explorer will allow enterprise data sets besides those warehoused by SAP to be ported into the platform for analysis. SAP has launched a number of enterprise platforms and applications in 2009, frequently in collaboration with companies such as Cisco and Hewlett-Packard.

Alcatel-Lucent Unveils 100GbE Network Interface

Alcatel-Lucent is announcing a 100GbE service routing interface aimed at helping service providers deal with the explosive growth in traffic, particularly video traffic. The announcement comes as other network equipment vendors are looking to add their products to the 100GbE mix. Juniper announced its first 100GbE interface card in June, and analysts expect Cisco to do the same soon. Despite the interest, mass adoption of 100GbE is a ways off, analysts say. Service providers are still migrating from 1GbE to 10GbE, with some beginning to adopt 40GbE. The first commercial 100GbE products wont be available until next year.
