Olam International upgrade to ‘oveweight’ by HSBC

HSBC Global Research in a Jan 31 research report says: “We believe Olam’s acquisition of Britannia Food Ingredients (BFI) and its logistics business for ~US$50 million will enhance Olam’s presence in the entire cocoa supply chain by including processed cocoa products. Yet the stock has underperformed due to operational concerns from environmental and political volatility.

Lasseters International posts half-year loss of $1m

Lasseters International Holdings reported a 16% increase in revenues to A$42.4 million ($54 million) and a loss of A$789,000 for the six months ended Dec 31, 2010. The company had reported earnings of A$164,000 in the same period last year. Lasseters says it continues to be impacted by the poor performance of the Cypress Lake Group, which is in the resorts, spas and health retreats business.

Fund manager Janus names international head, to boost Singapore operations

U.S. fund manager Janus on Thursday named Augustus Cheh as president of non-U.S. business arm Janus Capital International and said it also will base a fund manager in Singapore as part of a plan to grow its global operations.

Cheh, formerly CEO of AllianceBernstein Hong Kong, will take up his new position at Janus effective March 29. He will be based in Hong Kong.

Osim International 4Q net income doubles, sales fall

Osim International said its fourth-quarter net income more than doubled to $17 million from $8 million a year earlier.

Sales in the quarter declined 6% to $133 million from $141 million, the company said in a statement to the Singapore stock exchange today.

Feith: Kosovo needs credible government

International Civilian Office (ICO) Head Pieter Feith said Friday that he expected that people under investigation would not be part of a new Kosovo government.

He explained that it would undermine Kosovo’s credibility and reputation in Brussels and Washington, and added that he was concerned over Kosovo’s stand regarding CoE rapporteur Dick Marty’s report.

Olam International sells $150m of 2.125% notes due 2012

Olam International., a commodity supplier backed by Singapore’s Temasek Holdings, sold $150 million of 2.125 percent notes due January 2012, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

“Kosovo needs credible government”

International Civilian Representative in Kosovo Pieter Feith says that Kosovo needs a new, credible government which will be ready to face the challenges.

He said that the December elections were held in a generally constructive atmosphere but that there had been some irregularities.

TEE International posts 54% rise in half-year net profit to $6.9m

Mainboard-listed TEE International, the engineering and integrated real estate and facilities management group, says net profit after tax increased 53.6% to $6.9 million for the six months ended 30 November 2010 (HY2011) from $4.5 million in HY2010.

Revenue for HY2011 surged 222.3% to $114.1 million compared with $35.4 million registered in the same period last year due to ongoing large-scale and new projects awarded to the group.

International rankings: Wrong numbers

Global league tables are interesting, but not always reliable

MEASURING things is hard. Counting mentions of them is easy. Google’s new search tool Ngram Viewer lets users find out how often a word occurs in the millions of books the firm has scanned. It also helps analyse the salience of abstract ideas—corruption, say—in different languages and places (see chart).

Lots of new numbers will be grist to the mills of those who compile international rankings. The hunger for crunchy comparisons of everything from venality to brainpower is huge and growing, not least among media such as this newspaper. It is tempting to try and pin ideas down by turning them into figures. Such measures can be handy. But they have serious flaws. …

TT Int’l down on report of Boustead pullout

Shares of Singapore electronics retailer TT International <TINL.SI> fell as much as 14.3% on Tuesday after the local press reported that Boustead Singapore <BTSS.SI> has pulled out of a plan for a joint warehouse project.

TT International shares fell 14.3% to $0.03 on a volume of 615,000 shares before it requested a trading halt.

LMA International NV in advanced negotiations to acquire US medical device manufacturer and …

Mainboard-listed LMA International NV, the provider of supraglottic airway management devices, says it is in advanced talks to acquire Wolfe Tory Medical, a Salt Lake City, Utah-based manufacturer and distributor of medical devices.

The expected cash consideration for the acquisition is US$13.1 million ($17.3 million), plus additional deferred payments based on the 2012 trailing sales of two new products that will be introduced in 2011. But the proposed acquisition will not include Wolfe Tory Medical’s critical care product, AbViser.
