DBS Vickers Securities in an Aug 18 research report says: “Olam today announced that it is investing in US$43.5 million greenfield cocoa processing facility in Abidjan (US$38.5 million) and a primary processing and warehousing facility in San Pedro (US$5 million), Cote D’Ivoire.

Olam International to invest in Cote d’Ivoire cocoa facility

Olam International said it will invest US$43.5 million ($59.1 million) in Cote d’Ivoire to set up a greenfield cocoa processing facility in Abidjan as well as a primary processing and warehousing facility in San Pedro.

China Sports International posts 64% fall in net profit to $2.6m

Mainboard-listed China Sports International, the branded sports fashion footwear and apparel company based in China, says net profit after tax for the second quarter ended 30 June 2010 (2Q10) fell 63.8% to RMB13.1 million ($2.6 million) from RMB36.2 million in 2Q09.

In 2Q10, Group revenue declined 40.7% to RMB311.0 million from RMB524.3 million in the same period last year (2Q09). The decrease in revenue was mainly attributable to increasing competition in the industry, especially for footwear products that resulted in weaker demand for the group’s products. In 2Q10, gross profit fell 42.8% to RMB48.0 million compared to RMB84.0 million in 2Q09. Earnings per share in 2Q10 was 1.99 RMB cents while net asset value per share as at 30 June 2010 was 113.03 RMB cents.

HTL International downgraded to Neutral by DMG

DMG downgrades HTL International (H64.SG) to Neutral from Buy; but lifts target price to $0.73 from $0.70 after rolling over valuation to blended FY10-11 8x P/E from 8x FY10 P/E, says Dow Jones.

DMG says while 2H tends to be seasonally stronger period for leather sofa maker, rising freight rates and raw leather hide prices likely to weigh on earnings.

Research house expects 2H10 core net profit to be comparable to $18.6 million achieved in 1H10. Shares off 2.7% at $0.73.

Combine Will International posts 1H net profit of $8.9m

Combine Will International Holdings, the China-based manufacturer of plastic and die-cast products that include boutique giftware and household products, says for the six months ended 30 June 2010 (1HY2010) it posted a 246% rise in net profit to HK$50.7 million ($8.9 million) versus HK$14.7 million for 1HFY2009.

Revenue rose 91% to HK$814.8 million compared to HK$425.9 million with the successful introduction of new products. ODM/OEM revenue increased by HK$185 million or 127.1% y-o-y. On the other hand, its Moulds and Toolings revenue decreased by HK$1.7 million or 2.9% while Machine Sales revenue increased by HK$29.6 million or 164.3%.

Combne Will says due to the large business increase from the ODM/OEM business, all Asia, North America and Europe markets have reported significant increase in terms of sales. This is especially for North America. The increases are HK$78.4 million or 553.6% increase in North America, HK$114.4 million or 69.6% increase in Asia and HK$20.1 million or 44.2% in Europe respectively.

Wilmar International posts 15% fall in 2Q net profit to $469m

Wilmar International, Asia’s leading agribusiness group, posted a 15% decline in net profit to US$344.5 million ($469 million) for the quarter ended June 30, 2010 (2Q2010).

Wilmar says net profit excluding non-operating items grew 13% to US$380.3 million. Net profit in 2Q2010 was affected by a negative change in valuation of US$41.7 million for convertible bonds, partially offset by a net income from other investments of US$6.2 million, whereas net profit for the quarter ended June 30, 2009 (2Q2009) was increased by a positive valuation of US$38.4 million for convertible bonds and a net income from other investments of US$38.0 million.

Trek 2000 International posts 138.1% jump in 1H net profit to $1.8m

Trek 2000 International, the inventor of the ThumbDrive and FluCard, today announced a 138.1% jump in half-year net profit to US$1.3 million ($1.77 million) from US$0.5 million in the corresponding period last year.

Revenue also grew by 42.9% to US$42.4 million from the previous year’s figure of US$29.7 million.

Western state-backed news outfits are struggling to keep their influence in the developing world

AS A child growing up in Afghanistan, Saad Mohseni watched his father listening to the BBC World Service and Voice of America: they were almost the only way of obtaining reliable domestic, let alone foreign news. No longer. Last month Mr Mohseni launched a satellite news channel broadcasting round the clock in Dari and Pashto. He hopes to distribute it on terrestrial television soon. Such upstarts are one reason Western governments are losing their voices in the places where they most want to be heard.

The cold war was the state-backed broadcasters’ heyday, with big budgets for propaganda wars about the virtues and vices of capitalism and communism. Powerful short-wave transmissions required costly kit; getting hold of the frequencies required international arm-twisting. It was a game for big and rich countries only. Peter Horrocks, head of BBC Global News, recalls “a comfortable world”. …

Heng Long International posts 2Q net profit of $1.1m

Heng Long International, the tannery of crocodilian leather, says it posted a net profit after tax of $1.1 million for the three months ended 30 June 2010 (2Q10), up 173.5% from $0.39 million in 2Q09.

Heng Long attributes the improvement to increased sales arising from the overall improvement in the global luxury goods industry. Group revenue in 2Q10 increased 63.1% to $12.8 million from $7.9 million in 2Q09.

Dapai International posts 63% rise in 2Q net profit of $21.5m

Mainboard-listed Dapai International Holdings Co., the China-based manufacturer of branded backpacks, recorded a year-on-year increase in revenue and net profit after tax to RMB568.9 million and RMB107.6 million ($21.5 million) respectively in the three months ended 30 June 2010 (2Q10).

The growth was driven by higher backpack sales and overall increase in average selling prices (ASP) in 2Q10 on the continued improvement in consumer spending in China.

HTL International posts higher 2Q net profit of $7.8m

Leather tanner and sofa manufacturer HTL International Holdings Limited has announced a 66.9% jump in 2Q 2010 net profit after tax of $7.8 million compared to $4.7 million in 2Q 2009. This comes on the back of a 2.6% increase in turnover of $164.0 million.

HTL International says 1H 2010 turnover grew by 10.2% to $315.1 million, driven by increased sofa sales of 14.7% to $289.3 million from $252.2 million in 1H 2009. Sofa sales in Europe continued to strengthen with an increase of 3.6% to $180.8 million from $174.6 million in 1H 2009. Asia and Australia/New Zealand also enjoyed firm growth in sofa sales.

Tee International rated ‘increase exposure’ by SIAS Research

SIAS Research in an Aug 2 research report says: “The company recorded an impressive 56% y-o-y growth in top line to $150.5 million. Gross profit margin fell from 19.2% to 15% y-o-y, as large-scale projects typically have lower gross profit margins. Nonetheless, gains in copper hedging contracts and investment property helped to boost the bottom line.

International Space Station Stable Despite Cooling Issues

Elec & Eltek International rated ‘outperform’ by CIMB

CIMB in a July 29 research report says: “2Q10 net profit of US$24.1 million (+136% y-o-y) was 39% above our estimate, with 1H10 profit of US$42.2 million forming 60% of our FY2010 forecast. The outperformance came from high-than-expected sales and margins.

Tee International records 73% rise in net profit after tax to $11.4m for full year

Mainboard-listed Tee International, the engineering and integrated real-estate and facilities management group, says the group posted a 72.7% rise in net profit after tax to $11.4 million for the 12 months ended 31 May 2010 (FY2010) compared to $6.6 million in the corresponding period last year.

Tee International says the group achieved a record high of $150.5 million in revenue for FY2010, a rise of 56% compared to the corresponding period last year (FY2009).

The XVIII International AIDS Society meeting: Waltzing with death

AIDS still kills 2m people a year. But the rate of new infections is falling and it is possible to imagine bringing the disease under control

TEN years ago, when the International AIDS Society (IAS) met in Durban, there was a lot of fractious debate between those who wanted to spend money on treating the sick and those who thought that stopping the epidemic was more important. It took another six years to realise that you might be able to do both. Suppressing the virus in someone’s body clearly saves his life, but it ought also to make him less likely to pass on infection. The latest evidence that this might be true was released at this year’s IAS meeting, held in Vienna on July 18th-23rd.

The meeting brought news of another long-sought breakthrough: a vaginal microbicide that will allow women to protect themselves from men who do not wear condoms. There was also much hand-wringing about money, as governments and taxpayers in rich countries feel the pinch. But even here there was a refreshing honesty, as the international agencies charged with combating the disease queued up to suggest ways of doing more with less. That businesslike approach was apparent, too, in discussions over focusing treatment on those who are most at risk. …
