Dr. Dog New Album/Tour

DR. DOG GEAR UP FOR ANTI- RECORDS DEBUT, SHAME, SHAME

SET FOR AN APRIL 6 RELEASE / BAND CONFIRMS 10-WEEK NATIONAL HEADLINING TOUR

Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog is very excited to announce the April 6 release of their Anti- Records debut, Shame, Shame. As a band that has traditionally built their spirited albums layer by layer in the undisturbed seclusion of their Philadelphia home studio, Dr. Dog realized that they would need to face the challenge of working in a professional studio and enlist the help of an outside producer (Rob Schnapf) if they were to continue their album-by-album evolutionary growth. The end result is the band’s most openly autobiographical release to date and peels back the layers of strings and horns of past albums to emphasize the raw immediacy of a tight unit honing their craft. Beginning January 27 in Troy NY, Dr. Dog will embark on a 10-week national headlining tour to premiere songs from Shame, Shame.

The stylistic reference points of Dr. Dog remain on Shame, Shame but with a darker tone. It’s an album whose themes of doubt, confusion and unanswered questions are soothed by bright harmonies, taut guitar riffs and soaring melodies. From beginning to end, Shame, Shame is a record destined to claim its place on the timeless margins, untouched by modern tastes and content to exist on its own terms. It’s the auspicious sound of Dr. Dog writing their exciting next chapter, one they’ve been working towards since they played their first notes together.

Brain’’s fear centre has built-in suffocation sensor

A new study in mice has revealed that the portion of the brain responsible for registering fear and even panic is equipped with a built-in chemical sensor that is triggered by a primordial terror – suffocation.
The research team from University of Iowa hopes that their new discovery may help to explain and perhaps even correct [...]

Euforquestra: Soup

By: Trevor Hill

Recent Fort Collins via Iowa City transplants Euforquestra have done everything an ambitious yet humble band needs to do right, for the better half of this decade. Expanding their sound and fan base (and, presumably, their minds) by going west, the seven-piece has added flourishes of dub, a logical conclusion after dalliances in Afrobeat, salsa, samba, and funk. Soup, the band’s third full length, is slick and smooth Saturday night party jams laden with lyrics reflective of the Midwestern dreadie zeitgeist.

The record storms in with “Cause A Reaction,” everything pushed to eleven before settling into a hypnotic groove that doesn’t let up until the reprise “Cause a Dub,” expertly produced by the band’s alto saxophonist Ryan Jeter. The African-tinged interplay between guitarist Mike Tallman and the dual percussionists on the title track’s warped middle section shows a lot of promise. “The Events of December 11″ features a hook that compels the listener to Google the 2007 ice storm that left the boys powerless and scared. The lyrics obliquely evoke images of the more infamous -ember 11th, whether the intent was witty irreverence or frustration, one recalls George W. Bush using a similar phrase as the sole reason for the unprovoked invasion of a Iraq.

The band is most at home on the instrumentals, as their vocal harmonies can’t possibly keep up with their hands. Fortunately, the non-Western influences shine enough to ensure repeated listens. The lyric-heavy tracks, long the bane of bands with Euforquestra’s caliber chops, never weigh the band down. At nearly 63 minutes, the record is never short on ideas. With new surroundings, they should have no trouble concocting another Soup, which is good news for anyone craving a second bowl.

Deer Tick Fall Tour/MP3

Deer Tick Announce More Fall Tour Dates And Release A Free MP3 from Born on Flag Day

Deer Tick

The highly anticipated second full-length release from Rhode Island rockers Deer Tick, Born On Flag Day, has been garnering critical praise as the band crosses the country while on tour. Flag Day is Deer Tick’s follow-up to the band’s 2007 acclaimed debut, War Elephant. With the Deer Tick’s most recent release, the band has been busy with an extensive touring schedule at clubs across the country and abroad.

Unlike War Elephant, Born On Flag Day features three new members of Deer Tick that principal songwriter John J. McCauley III recruited to become the band’s current incarnation – Andy Tobiassen, Dennis Ryan and Chris Ryan. Born On Flag Day reflects a natural evolution from a singular vision of one songwriter to something much communal and listener friendly.

Brother Ali Tour, MP3 &:Album w/ Chuck D & Ant

Brother Ali Announces New Album And North American Tour

Brother Ali

Brother Ali‘s last album, the critically acclaimed, The Undisputed Truth, was an album of bold statements and social awareness without being preachy. Ali’s new album, Us, Street Date September 22, has turned his gaze inward and starts to examine the human condition from the outside in. A profound, personal glimpse into a vulnerability seldom seen or heard in music, Us touches on the strengths and flaws of the human condition, exploring drug abuse, divorce, homophobia and many more topics that most people are scared to touch in their own lives, much less on an album for the world to see.

As with previous endeavors, the beats here are courtesy of Ant (of Atmosphere), whose production work seems to be getting more soulful and lush by the minute. The guest appearances only accentuate Brother Ali’s strengths, with Chuck D, Freeway, Joell Ortiz and Stokley Williams of Mint Condition making strong appearances.

In support of the new album, Ali is embarking on a North American tour of epic proportions, enlisting the help of labelmates and collaborators Evidence (of Dilated Peoples), BK One and Toki Wright.

Peep the video for the fist single “Us,” it’s pretty dope. And you can download “Us” for free here:
