GIC buys European rescue debt, May support further bond sales

Government of Singapore Investment Corp., a sovereign wealth fund with US$100 billion ($128.4 billion) of reserves, bought some of the European debt issued to finance Ireland’s bailout, Deputy Chairman Tony Tan said.

“We believe the bond is relatively safe given how it’s structured and it gives us reasonable yield,” Tan said in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. GIC will consider buying more European rescue debt in future sales, he said.

Irish PM quits as party leader

Ireland’s PM Brian Cowen announced Saturday he was stepping down as head of his Fianna Fail party but would remain as the PM ahead of elections in March.

“Taking everything into account, and having discussed the matter with my family, I have decided on my own counsel to step down as uachtarain [president] of Fianna Fail and leader of Fianna Fail,” Cowen told reporters in Dublin.

Foo Fighters have launched

“Bridge Burning,” the opening track of the band’s seventh full length studio album, due out this spring on
Roswell/RCA. Check out the teaser below.

The album, produced by Butch Vig and mixed by Alan Moulder, was recorded entirely on analog
tape in the garage of Dave Grohl‘s home in California’s San Fernando Valley. The new record marks the
Foo Fighters’ first full length effort with legendary producer Butch Vig, whom Grohl first worked with on Nirvana‘s classic Nevermind.
Nirvana co-founder Krist Novoselic also makes a cameo, contributing bass and accordion to “I Should
Have Known,” while former Nirvana touring guitarist and longtime extended FF family member Pat Smear
now joins the permanent FF core of Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett.

Concurrent with the album’s release, Exclusive Media Group’s documentary division Spitfire Pictures will be
producing a feature documentary about the Foo Fighters to be directed by Academy Award winner James
Moll
(The Last Days, Running The Sahara). The documentary will chronicle the entire history of the Foo
Fighters, from the cassette demos Grohl
recorded during his tenure as Nirvana’s drummer through their ascent to their Grammy-winning, multi-platinum,
arena and stadium headlining status as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.

The new Foo Fighters record will be supported by an extensive world tour. The band is confirmed to headline across
the worldwide summer festival circuit, including
Washington state’s Sasquatch!, the UK’s Isle of White, Pink Pop in the Netherlands, Germany’s Southside and
Hurricane, Oxegen in Ireland, T in the Park in Scotland, Optimus Alive in Portgual, and more to be announced as
they are confirmed.

FM travels to Spain, Ireland, Austria

Singapore says world outlook mixed after record 2010

Singapore’s economy faces a “mixed” global outlook after growing by a record pace this year, according to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Gross domestic product rose 14.7% this year, Lee, 58, said in his New Year message released in Singapore today. That compares with the government’s November forecast of a 15% expansion. The trade ministry predicts the economy will expand 4% to 6% in 2011, an estimate reiterated by Lee.

“The outlook for the world economy is mixed,” Lee said. “The U.S. economy is still weak. Europe faces serious debt crises in Greece, Ireland and a few other countries.”

Singapore shares fell 0.5% by midday on Tuesday, tracking lower indexes across Asia on concerns that Ireland’s debt problems may spread to other euro zone countries.

return engagements beginning March 30 in Ft. Lauderdale and running through April 22 in 2011 with dates in
