Italy: Fiat workers accept key changes

Workers at Fiat’s historic Mirafiori factory have backed a landmark deal that will save the loss-making plant and could transform labor relations in Italy. The Italian automaker Fiat won support from a thin majority of workers at a key factory for a contract that limits strikes and absenteeism in exchange for EUR 1bn investment in Italy, unions said on Saturday.

DAILY DETAILS
The euro gained on the US dollar earlier this morning after a successful Portuguese bond auction this morning. The Portuguese government sold €1.25 billion in four– and ten-year bonds today, with yields on the four-year notes rising to 5.4%. The yield on the ten-year note, however, fell to 6.7%. Interest in the bonds was strong, with a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.6 times for the four-year and 3.2 times for the ten-year. It was feared that yields above 7% may have forced Portugal to turn to rescue funds in order to prevent rising borrowing costs spreading across the region. Bond buying from the ECB earlier in the week and Japan and China’s stated intentions to purchase the region’s debt helped ease some of the liquidity concerns heading into the auction. Comments from EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn also supported the euro, as he said that the ‘the effective lending capacity of the current European Financial Stability Facility should be reinforced and the scope of its activity widened.’ [1] With Portugal’s bond auction completed, the euro may rise in the short term. However, Spain and Italy will test the bond market tomorrow and the structural weaknesses in the euro are yet to be addressed. As a result, any gains in the euro may be short-lived. Freight transport: Put that in your pipe and poke it

A visionary idea for modernising the goods-distribution network

ENTHUSIASTS of the digital economy sometimes forget that bits are not everything. However important information is in transforming business, most of what is actually bought and sold is still physical goods, and those goods need to be delivered to the customer. Unlike information technology, though, freight transport has not evolved much during the past few decades. It takes only a few seconds to choose and buy something from an online store, but several days for it then to reach the purchaser. That process also burns oil, contributes to traffic jams and makes the planet’s atmosphere a little warmer by releasing carbon dioxide.

Freight transport could thus use some fresh ideas. Or at least a new version of an old idea. And that is exactly what Franco Cotana, an engineering physicist at the University of Perugia, in Italy, has in mind. He proposes to revive, with a modern twist, an extinct technology called the pneumatic pipe. …

European tyremakers: Bouncing back

Pirelli and Continental shrug off their chequered past

A COUPLE of decades ago two tyremakers, Pirelli of Italy and Continental of Germany, were locked in a takeover battle. A merger would have brought them close to the size of the world’s big three tyre firms: Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin. It didn’t happen. Continental fought off Pirelli and they went their separate ways. Both have had a bumpy ride.

Tyremaking is a dependable, if unglamorous, business. Even when recession bites—as it has twice since 1991—motorists still need replacement tyres, which account for 75% of revenues. But that steady cashflow tempted both Pirelli and Continental to veer off track. …

“Quint must have known”, says ex-UN official

The so-called Quint countries “must have known about the allegations made in the recent report by Council of Europe (CoE) Rapporteur Dick Marty”. The five countries – U.S., Britain, Germany, France and Italy – had access to information, resources and a long history of work with the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), former U.S. diplomat and UN Regional Representative in northern Kosovo Gerard Gallucci told Belgrade’s Politika newspaper in an interview.

Italy to EU: Protect Christians

Diplomatic tussle between Italy and Brazil

Italy has roundly condemned Brazil’s decision not to extradite a former far-left militant convicted of a string of murders in the 1970’s.
Cesare Battisti escaped from an Italian prison in 1981 and lived in France for many years. But he was forced to flee when Paris approved his extradition in 2007.
