JamBase Questionnaire: Ryan Montbleau Band

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Spiritual Rez.

Being effortlessly charming and pumping out highly infectious music with a quickness seems to come easy to the Ryan Montbleau Band. For this bunch “pop” isn’t an ugly word. Montbleau’s tunes possess the sort of wide reach that lodges records in car stereos, video countdowns and beloved dorm room stashes. But for all the readily likeable traits, Montbleau’s music possesses an undisguised lustiness and clever streak that recall early Randy Newman, which hints that we’re only in the early stages of what he and his band will become.

Press play on Heavy On The Vine (released September 21) and the hooks just keep on coming, and in a wide variety of styles – pure radio fare, blue-eyed reggae, crooner territory and folksy shuffles – each delivered credibly. The whole band plays with lovely texture and the songs are ripe for live expansion, something the many miles already behind RMB have well prepared them to do. Martin Sexton‘s production accents a warm, group sound but still makes sure to let Montbleau’s crush-ready pipes stand out on every track. His voice marries Jack Johnson’s slacker drawl to Stevie Wonder’s brightness and dexterous way with a melody, and the whole album seems just one good soundtrack placement away from blowing up. Big.

In the meantime, Montbleau and his merry band will keep working clubs and theatres nationwide, as well as backing up Sexton from time to time. This weekend they’ll be in Albany, NY (9/24), Rochester, NY (9/25) and Ithaca, NY (9/26). For full tour schedule pop over here. (Dennis Cook)

Here’s what Ryan had to say to our inquiries.

Ryan Montbleau Band

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Listening. Actually, it never happens without listening.

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
Huey Lewis and the News’ Sports.

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
“Sissyfuss” by Surprise Me Mr. Davis

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
A pro baseball player

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
A quiet, listening environment, although I enjoy the others, too.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
I just want to get better.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
The word “book”

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
The Beatles’ White Album

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Tim Hardiman’s catering for us in Utica, NY

10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
The smallest towns, but any show can be great; you just never know.

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Drinking more and sleeping later

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
The Beatles. I just don’t think the Stones can even touch the amount of great songs that The Beatles wrote.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
I don’t knowÂ…Davy Jones from The Monkees at one of our gigs in Knoxville, TN? That’s a tough one.

John Brown’s Body & Toubab Krewe Tour

JOHN BROWN’S BODY AND TOUBAB KREWE ANNOUNCE CO-HEADLINE U.S. TOUR

John Brown’s Body

On March 11, progressive reggae band John Brown’s Body and West African-influenced quintet Toubab Krewe kick off a 13-city co-headlining U.S. tour. The tour begins in Brooklyn, NY, and ends in Solana Beach, CA.

Each group has achieved mainstream success by performing their own forward-thinking approach to traditional roots styles, John Brown’s Body with reggae and Toubab Krewe with West African music.

In recent years both groups’ music has spread like a grassroots wildfire to the farthest corners of the world. While Toubab Krewe performed in Mali and Portugal, John Brown’s Body completed first-ever tours of New Zealand and the U.K. in late 2009.

This month, the musicians were re-introduced aboard Jam Cruise (read the Jam Cruise review here). Returning from stops in Jamaica and Grand Cayman Island, the bands met up during an all-artist basketball tournament (neither advanced past the first round). Despite a disappointing showing on the court, they spent the night catching up and watching each other perform as the ship sailed out to sea.

The upcoming tour will build on the friendly vibe forged in far away places, where the bands found common ground.

U-Melt: New Guitarist New Album, National Tour

U-MELT ANNOUNCE NEW GUITARIST, NATIONAL TOUR BEHIND NEW ALBUM PERFECT WORLD

U-Melt

U-Melt has announced the departure of guitarist Rob Salzer, and will welcome Kevin Griffin as his replacement. Below is a message from the band.

A band is a living organism: changing, adapting, and growing. As one ebbs another flows and we use every experience as a reminder of where we have been and a forecast of where we are going. It is with much sadness that U-Melt announces the departure of guitarist, Rob Salzer, from U-Melt. Rob helped create U-Melt out of a440 in 2003 and has enjoyed all of U-Melt’s adventures over the last 6 years. Together, we have had the pleasure of creating both unique music and a passionate fan base in cities around the country. Rob has decided he needs to attend to both his medical needs (not too serious, don’t worry!) and new personal endeavors. While we are sad to see our dear friend go, we admire Rob for taking care of himself and we are by his side during this process. The band completely supports his decision as we know it is right for him at this time. Rob is always a member of the U-Melt family and we look forward to collaborating with him in both the studio and on the stage in the future.

Moving forward to the next exciting chapter for U-Melt, it is with great pleasure that we announce that long time friend of the band, Kevin Griffin, will be U-Melt’s new guitarist beginning in February for the Perfect World Album Release Tour. Kevin has shared the stage with U-Melt a number of times over the years and solidified his place in the family the last few weeks by proving his impeccable taste and timing during the audition process.

According to U-Melt’s keyboardist, Zac Lasher, “Kevin’s sense of timing and space are fantastic, and he can make some great sounds with his guitar rig. When we were playing together the other day, he was doing some textural stuff that absolutely blew my mind. He brought a new sound and energy to the music that had Bendy, G, and I looking up and laughing because it sounded so damn good.”

Griffin has been a staple on the NY/NJ live music scene for many years, sometimes juggling as many as 5 different and diverse bands at a time and playing 200 shows a year. Those of you that have been able to catch The Point or Reckoning can imagine how excited we are to add his extensive experience and great talent to U-Melt. In addition to playing a captivating guitar, Kevin studied jazz woodwinds and audio recording tech at the same school as Adam and Rob. We are very excited for the multi-faceted approach Kevin will be adding to U-Melt’s sound along with his spirited song writing skills, impressive catalogue of covers and years of musical experience on the road. (N)U-Melt in 2010!

We thank our fans for their support and their patience these last few months. We know you will all help us welcome our new spectacular guitarist to the band. As the tide shifts U-Melt has a lot of exciting news for 2010. First, we will be streaming one track from U-Melt’s upcoming album, Perfect World, over the next 10 weeks on our MySpace page. Perfect World will be released in stores nationally via Harmonized Records on February 23, 2010 and we’ll be celebrating its release with a party in our hometown of New York City at the Bowery Ballroom! As each week passes, we’ll replace the studio track in MySpace with a new one. So, be sure to check in every week for a taste of Perfect World and other exciting news on unreleased outtakes and new songs with Kevin Griffin.

Finally, get ready for the holidays U-Melt style! In the coming weeks we will be releasing a number of new crisp SBD recordings through our very own U-Tunes live download space. If you’re looking for the perfect present for that friend that has everything, you can rest assured they do not have these unreleased recordings. Be sure to join us on the Perfect World National Tour as we launch a new era of U-Melt.

Kevin, welcome to the band.

See you on the road!

Jimkata: Burn My Money

By: Johnny Goff

The second release and first full-length studio album from progressive jamband Jimkata builds where the first album left off and neatly avoids the old cliche ‘sophomore slump.’ True to a portion of Jimkata’s melodic persuasions, Burn My Money takes some ambitious leaps sonically and some venturous jaunts vocally. While many of Jimkata’s loyal base are 20-somethings, those born in the ’70s may recognize Jimkata’s slightly evolving sound as early ’80s New Wave meeting jam-inspired prog rock. Think Talking Heads and The Police meets Pink Floyd meets ’80s sitcom theme music.

Vocals and strong lyrics have long been the dynamic force for Jimkata, a trend that continues on Burn My Money lead-off title cut, with the theme of knowing where you’re going but never forgetting where you’ve come from. It’s the journey we all strive for, the destination being the difficult facet of the equation as we fight for financial freedoms amidst artistic exploration. As far as the instrumentation and experimentation of the album, it’s a much more mature expression from the busy Ithaca quartet.

On the second track, “One to Ten,” first and second listens from a middle aged listener could yield echoes of the ’80s Jesus Jones hit “Right Here, Right Now.” While jamming is present on Burn My Money, “One to Ten” really is a track that showcases Jimkata’s progressive influences, perhaps echoing Umphrey’s McGee. This song is also a potential vehicle for ‘crossover success,’ as record executives might put it.

On “Baby, Put It On Me,” rhythm guitarist and lead singer Evan Friedell once again burrows into traveling themes and downplaying physical possessions: “I’ve been finding that all these things we place value on/ will always be erased/ After we go/ After we go/ After we go away.” This track recalls Phish’s “Theme from the Bottom” (“Throw away stuff you don’t need in the end/ Keep what’s important/ And know who’s your friend”) and is another coming-of-age type song where Jimkata shows their jam chops with melodies floating into early Talking Heads style fallback rifts before drummer Packy Lunn drops consistent beats amid layered guitar, ultimately propelling a rhythmic swaying hammock. True to their roots, the song is reminiscent of some other Ithaca-area musicians, most notably Sims Redmond Band or Donna the Buffalo, but always with some uniquely Jimkata elements.

“Ping Pong” is a fun song and a nice use of studio elements. However, as an unfortunate byproduct of great studio production, Fridell’s vocals are often over-filtered on numerous Burn My Money tracks. While offering more harmonized vocals from bassist Dave Rossi and lead guitarist Aaron Gorsch, “Ping Pong” and the album’s title track are evidence that Jimkata’s live prowess are conducive to and perhaps enhanced by a studio jam sessions.

The chameleon, filtered vocals, the ’80s synths, New Wave tones, and driving rhythms are omnipresent by mid-album, begging comparisons to late period work by The Police. From “Place of Dreams,” a sure dance floor song if extended live, onward it’s obvious the second half of Burn My Money has a completely new feel. Less lyrically based and more exploratory instrumentally, the last 25 minutes of the album are proof the band is still JamBase material.

In the final stretch, Jimkata drops “Trunkaphonic,” with bassy electronic zaps from Rossi and yet another studio voice filter for Friedell, which can be overlooked simply because it’s the album’s most vocally anemic track. True to its lone chorus – “Have we ever thought to slow down” – this track is destined to be a favorite with Jimkata loyalists who revel in the group’s extended live rock ballads. The album’s final track, “Drums Won’t Guide,” gently offers paternal life advice: “Drums won’t guide you into the room/ And fish won’t jump up out of the pond/ And into your mouth easily, son.” This slow-harmonized chant once again seems to call upon the themes of balancing love for music with actual survival.

The album, more than a year in the making, isn’t an entirely bold step for Jimkata. It’s not a safe step either. However, it does seem to be the appropriate one. There wasn’t too much that needed fine-tuning from their inaugural release. However, as these musicians mature, an album like Burn My Money, while drawing on the band’s sensibilities, also begins to break down some preconceived notions about Jimkata. Terms like “young” or “up and coming” should begin to fall to the wayside, and comparisons to other local or national bands should soon find a similar fate. Burn My Money could be just the vehicle Jimkata needs for a successful breakthrough en route to collecting some real legal tender.

Burn My Money is available for a free download here.
