that the artists we grew up with are now the icons of today, and that today’s new heroes are tomorrow’s heritage.

The 2011 Festival will also host the largest celebration of Haitian culture in the U.S. since the devastating earthquake

honored to host the icons of Haitian music and culture including Wyclef Jean, Tabou Combo, RAM, Boukman
Eksperyans, Emeline Michel, Djakout #1, DJA-Rara and Ti-Coca & Wanga Negès. The many cultural connections will
be illustrated throughout all aspects of this year’s Festival. Some highlights include traditional Vodou drumming
performances, folk crafts demonstrations led by visiting master artisans and rara band DJA-Rara parading
throughout the Fair Grounds. With the support of the Green Family Foundation, the program will also include a
series of scholar-led panel discussions entitled Haiti & New Orleans: Cultural Crossroads as well as a listening station
featuring excerpts from the Grammy nominated recordings of Dr. Alan Lomax made in Haiti for the Library of
Congress in 1936-1937.

Jason Mraz Engaged

The phrase “I’m Yours” is about to take new meaning for “Remedy” crooner and Virginia native Jason Mraz. The 33-year-old crooner — who snagged a Grammy nomination in 2008 — was elated after his marriage proposal yielded a resounding “You Betcha!” (OK, so she didn’t say it exactly like that!) from fellow singer/songwriter Tristan Prettyman. Life is good Festival :: 09.11.10-09.12.10 :: Prowse Farm:: Canton, MA

Good music, a good cause and a good attitude. What’s not to like about the inaugural Life is good Festival? Spring forth this coming weekend in Canton, Mass, a suburb of Boston, this event gathers together heavy hitters like Ben Harper & Relentless7, Ziggy Marley, Jason Mraz and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals to help raise much needed funds for the Life is good Kids Foundation, which aids children and their families with life-threatening ailments.

“The 2010 Life is good Festival at Blue Hills is a one-of-a kind event. No other festival in the country can offer the talent and entertainment experience that families and music fans alike will find at the 2010 Life is good Festival – all while helping to raise funds for kids facing life-threatening challenges,” said Bert Jacobs, Chief Executive Optimist for Life is good. “We have some of the very best performers coming together and we are going to have a great time while we raise more than $1 million dollars for the Life is good Kids Foundation.”

On top of being a positivity charged fine use of one’s dollars, this festival has some great musical talent over and above the top names. Here’s a few suggestions if you make your way to Blue Hills on Saturday and/or Sunday.

1. The Sippy Cups:: Saturday & Sunday :: 11:30 AM-12:30 PM :: “Good Kids” Stage

Kids music is largely a wretched hive of sub-par crapola (trust the parent of a 3-year-old boy), but Bay Area gems The Sippy Cups are fun, clever AND good musicians who don’t pander to kids so much as engage them in a cool way. The Cups open musical festivities both days and it’d be tough to start your ‘goodness’ on better footing – whether you have kids along or not!

2. Eli “Paperboy” Reed & The True Loves :: Saturday :: 12:30-1:15 PM :: “Life Is Good” Stage

Real soul music is making a small comeback in 2010, and this Massachusetts native is part of the cresting wave that’s bringing back the quality and vibe of vintage Motown, Stax/Volt, etc. but in a living, breathing way rather than a nostalgia exercise.

3. They Might Be Giants :: Saturday :: 2:30-3:30 PM :: “Good Kids” Stage

Speaking of kids music that doesn’t suck it sideways, TMBG have carved quite the nifty niche for themselves inside the Disney empire in recent years AND done so with real dignity – a trick the Mouse Factory makes VERY hard. Like Ween’s good-natured twin, the Giants are masters of all styles and know a hook when they find one. They also play on Sunday, 1:00-2:00 pm, on the same stage. Go and yell, “Istanbul!” at them and see what happens!

4. Toubab Krewe :: Sunday :: 1:15-2:30 PM :: “Good Vibes” Stage

Each time onstage is different yet consistently electrifying for audiences and players alike with Toubab Krewe, who dabble in a bit of this and that to mold something rhythmic, dense and engaging that’s as original as anything out there today.

5. Brett Dennen :: Sunday :: 4:45-5:45 PM :: “Good Vibes” Stage

A spot of sensitive singer-songwriter fare always goes down so, so well around sundown, and there’s not many better proponents of this stuff than Dennen. Grab a piece of grass, lay back and let him float you away on wings of song. Kinda corny but sounds nice, eh?

Grammys: Young, Fleck, Trucks Byrne, KOL, Zac Brown, Earle

Neil Young, Derek Trucks, Bela Fleck, David Byrne, Kings of Leon, Zac Brown

Take Home Grammys at the 52nd Annual Awards Show

Kings of Leon

Last night (Monday, January 31) the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards were held in Los Angeles. While most of the performances were not particularly inspiring, the Michael Jackson tribute featuring Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood and Usher was done very well and proved quite moving. After the performance, Jackson’s children, Prince and Paris Jackson, accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award for their father.

Other performances of note included a somewhat interesting pairing of Lady Gaga and Elton John, a nice reading of “You and Me” by Dave Matthews Band, a tribute to Haiti featuring Mary J. Blige, David Foster and Andrea Bocelli, Zac Brown Band singing with Leon Russell, and the show closing combo of Drake, Lil’ Wayne and Eminem. Meanwhile, both the Black Eyed Peas and Bon Jovi were incredibly underwhelming; which is perhaps, not a shock.

And now onto the awards. There were a number of JamBase regulars who took home Grammys. Neil Young won his first ever, taking home the Grammy for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for The Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972). Bela Fleck , who has been nominated in the most categories in Grammy history, took home the award for Pop Instrumental Performance for Throw Down Your Heart. Derek Trucks Band won the Best Contemporary Blues Album for Already Free. Phoenix grabbed Best Alternative Music Album with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Zac Brown Band was named Best New Artist, Kings of Leon won for Record of the Year, Rock Performance, Duo or Group With Vocals and Rock Song. David Byrne and Brian Eno‘s Everything That Happens Will Happen Today won Best Recording Package, Booker T. Jones grabbed a trophy for Pop Instrumental Album, Bruce Springsteen for Solo Rock Vocal Performance on Working on a Dream, Steve Earle for Best Contemporary Folk Album with Townes, and Beyonce won more trophies than anyone else, setting a record for most awards by a female artist in a single night with six.

Grace Potter & Brett Dennen | 11.20 | NYC

Words by: Alex Neif | Images by: Allison Murphy

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals & Brett Dennen :: 11.20.09 :: Terminal 5 :: New York, NY

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals :: 11.20

Though it should be, it’s not every night that you walk into Terminal 5 and are greeted by two women offering free Cabot cheddar. It was enough to make a Burlington boy feel right at home (despite having just passed through the Terminal 5 security gauntlet, which is akin to a shakedown by the Mossad). From the free cheese to the bustling merch table (it should be noted that the GPN merch table was operated by the friendliest tour staff I’ve ever met) fans were noticeably relaxed and in high spirits even before entering the main room.

The show was billed as Grace Potter and the Nocturnals co-headlining with Brett Dennen with Sean Bones as support.

Bones kicked off the show with a short set of white-man’s reggae that had the distinct sound of a college party band, though that’s not to say that Bones (Sean Sullivan) is without his positive musical attributes. Bones exudes energy and confidence onstage despite the fact that he and his band have a long way to go in terms of perfecting their sound, which on this night was a bit loosey-goosey. I would still say that this band is worth keeping an eye on.

As Sean Bones exited the stage, the floor began to reach capacity in anticipation of the first of the two headlining acts. After a brief interlude, Dennen hit the stage characteristically unshod and understated. He proceeded to lead the audience through an inspired set of infectious folk-pop that is distinctly his own. Dennen’s songwriting and performance style have earned him respect from both the music industry establishment and Madison Avenue (an important ally in the evolving industry). In short measure, Dennen has gone from total obscurity to the “artist to look out for” to the “artist that you don’t know you know,” though that is rapidly changing. Recently, no less than Carson Daly invited Dennen to fill his entire hour-long late night show with the premier of a recently taped coffee house performance in L.A. Dennen has earned himself a place amongst a select few singer-songwriter superstars such as John Mayer, Jack Johnson, and Jason Mraz. In this small fraternity, Dennen stands out in almost every way. Unlike the others, who found success by expanding on the industry niche carved out by Dave Matthews in the early nineties, Dennen’s accomplishments were achieved mostly on spec, as there was really nothing to compare him to.

Brett Dennen :: 11.20

At this set, Dennen never stopped shaking his hips from the first note to the last. Dennen is a natural when it comes to putting an audience at ease and giving them the impression that they are not at a sold out concert but rather sitting in on an inspired jam session; the 3,000+ fans present that casually bobbed their heads and smiled while sipping their beers evidenced this. Perhaps the most important part of any live show is to bring the right energy to the music, and in Dennen’s case, he quite organically melds the context with the content and the two begin to seem inseparable. Catch Dennen making his way across the Midwest in late-November/early December. For those on the West Coast, the band will be grooving their way down the coast with a New Year’s Eve extravaganza at the Fox Theater in Oakland with friends ALO and SambaDa supporting. Complete Brett Dennen tour dates available here.

What can you say about Grace Potter that hasn’t already been said a thousand times on the pages of magazines and fan sites? You couldn’t say that she is an enormously talented multi-instrumentalist with one foot solidly in the world of traditional song crafting and another in the ethereal abyss of jamspace (been said). Nor could you say she has Joan Jett’s attitude with Linda Ronstadt’s voice in Tina Turner’s dress (covered). But after her recent performance at Terminal 5, what you could say about Potter is that everything that has been said about her is true. This goes for the band as well. 2009 has been a period of growth and change for GPN. Early this year the band saw the departure of founding bassist Brian Dondero, who was replaced with former Ryan Adams bassist Catherine Popper. The band also announced the addition of a fifth Nocturnal, Benny Yurco (Blues and Lasers). Yurco’s rhythm guitar provides well balanced accompaniment to Scott Tournet‘s lead and gives the band a larger sound, which compliments their musical range.

Grace Potter :: 11.20

The band walked onstage and set it ablaze with “Some Kind of Ride” from their 2005 release Nothing But The Water. The energy level of the band and audience was electric. Potter then switched out her guitar and hopped on the B3 for the bluesy “Medicine,” the title track to their forthcoming new release. Potter continued to jump around the stage, moving from keys to guitar to tambourine to straight ass shaking when the moment called for it. And the audience was locked in.

When things slowed down a bit for the heartfelt “Apologies,” the audience swayed and listened attentively to the deeply personal lyrics. “Apologies” is a beautiful, brokenhearted love song that no doubt stems from a very real relationship (no one can sing like that to some contrived industry love song). In what was perhaps the most adept transition of the show, the band followed with “Oasis,” perhaps the best showcase of every band member’s talents. On drums, Matthew Burr bounced around like a mustachioed Muppet, forming an airtight groove with Popper, while Tournet played beautiful psychedelic-blues solos over Yurco’s rich rhythm and Potter wailed like an angry siren.

The band encored with a chilling cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and the title track from Nothing But The Water. After the show, the energy poured out onto the streets of Hell’s Kitchen as a few thousand elated fans made their way to their respective subway stations.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have come of age, and they are without a doubt one of the very best American touring acts today. They broke big with their original lineup and limited experience. Now it seems that they have isolated the factors that lead to their early successes and refined them, while making changes where needed. When Medicine is released early next year, GPN is primed to explode.

Danny Barnes: New Album

PIZZA BOX AVAILABLE NOW DIGITALLY AND IN STORES JANUARY, 2010

Danny Barnes

Danny Barnes, banjo pioneer and a founding member of the Bad Livers, a seminal Austin alternative country band, has digitally released his new album, Pizza Box, through ATO Records. Pizza Box can be purchased through all digital retailers, as well Barnes’ ATO page here. It is Barnes’ first release since being signed by Dave Matthews to his New York-based ATO Records. Matthews, a longtime fan of Barnes, also contributed the cover illustration for Pizza Box.

On Halloween, Barnes wrapped up an 18-date tour supporting the new album, spanning much of the Northeast and Midwest.

With Pizza Box, Barnes spins tales of American life like a latter-day John Steinbeck, wielding banjo and pen with equal effect, and the character of his voice as the perfect mouthpiece to truly bring these songs and stories to life. Pizza Box comes stuffed with sharp hooks and addictive vocal and instrumental melodies, but it’s Barnes’ storytelling skills that shine the strongest. He tells tales with the wry wit and humor of Garrison Keilor, the lyrical eccentricities and intellect of Randy Newman, and performs with the southern twang and swagger of Levon Helm. Barnes combines and blends all of these elements into a style that is uniquely his own.

“Overdue,” the lead single from Pizza Box and already receiving airplay, is a moving look at a relationship that’s endured some rough times. The track is one of three that Matthews sings background vocals on. The album was produced by John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Jason Mraz) and recorded at Haunted Hollow in Charlottesville, VA. It features Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam, David Bowie, T Bone Burnett) on drums and Rashawn Ross (a touring member of Dave Matthews Band) on horns.

According to Matthews, “Danny Barnes’ Pizza Box is my favorite new music, my favorite rock record, and my favorite country record. From the first time he sat down and played me ‘Road,’ I knew his next record was going to be great, but I didn’t expect this. The music is smart and soulful, and the lyrics are profound. It is heaven and earth. It is Americana, from the back porch to the pulpit, shattered dreams on angels’ wings. I can’t stop listening. In the haze of over produced, ‘perfect’ recordings, Danny Barnes spent less than two weeks banging out an album that may well save your soul.”

“The label ‘true original’ gets bandied about too often these days, but Danny Barnes deserves it,” said Paste Magazine, while the Austin American Statesman has hailed Barnes as “One of the most wildly imaginative musicians on the planet.”

The list of artists Barnes has performed alongside is as eclectic as his music and includes Bela Fleck, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Gov’t Mule, Bill Frisell, and members of the Butthole Surfers, Dead Kennedys, and Ministry. Barnes is prominently featured on two tracks on Dave Matthews Band’s latest album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.
