Yim Yames, Ben Sollee, Moore Appalachian Voices Tour

TRIO PLAYS TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL MINING

Yim Yames by Kory Johnson

Yim Yames, singer-songwriter Daniel Martin Moore and genre-bending cellist and vocalist Ben Sollee will embark on a nine date Appalachian Voices Tour in an effort to raise public awareness of the devastating practice of Mountaintop Removal coal mining throughout Appalachia. A portion of the proceeds from the tour will benefit Appalachian Voices, for which the tour was named, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal coal mining together with diverse environmental problems impacting the central and southern Appalachian Mountains.

The trio released an album made together earlier this year, Dear Companion, which also sought to generate further awareness of the devastating impact of mountaintop removal mining. See the JamBase review for the album here.

Tickets for the shows will go on sale beginning Friday, May 21st. For links and info, go to www.yimyames.com. A statement on the site reads:

“The people and the land of Appalachia are too important to us as a nation to be sacrificed for something as short-sighted as Mountaintop Removal (MTR) coal mining. Our cultural stake in the region, from its music to its log cabins, is an indispensable part of our history and identity as Americans. People all over the world know our country music, our dances and our stories and they call them American. They are the fruit of Appalachia.” – Ben Sollee, Daniel Martin Moore and Yim Yames.

Anastasio and Classic TAB Tour

ANASTASIO AND CLASSIC TAB ANNOUNCE 2010 TOUR DATES

Trey Anastasio

Trey Anastasio has had an incredible 2009 with Phish, which toured for the first time in over four years and closed out the year with four consecutive shows at Miami’s American Airlines Arena last week (see the review of Miami NYE here). Now the singer/guitarist is preparing to hit the road with Trey Anastasio Band, which has backed him on many of his solo projects.

An online ticket request period begins tomorrow, January 6, at 10:00 a.m. EST here. Tickets will go on sale to the general public next week.

The tour kicks off with a special benefit show at the Jefferson Theatre in Charlottesville, VA on February 8. The date marks what would have been the 47th birthday of Trey’s sister, Kristine Anastasio, an esteemed environmentalist and author who died of neuroendocrine cancer last April. Proceeds from the show will go to the Kristine Anastasio Manning Memorial Fund, which supports many of the causes and charities she devoted herself to.

Hitting several cities that Anastasio has never played before, the dates are the first for Classic TAB since they went out as a quartet last fall. Now they’re adding horns back into the mix with Russell Remington (tenor saxophone and flute) and Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet and vocals), who will once again join Russ Lawton (drums), Tony Markellis (bass) and Ray Paczkowski (keyboards). New to the group is Natalie Cressman on trombone and vocals, who replaces her father, Jeff Cressman.

The septet will perform material that spans Anastasio’s solo career, including “Push On ‘Til The Day” (from 2000′s Trey Anastasio), “Sweet Dreams Melinda” and “Sleep Again” (from Shine, 2005), “Goodbye Head” (Bar 17, 2006) and “Olivia” and “Burlap Sack & Pumps” (The Horseshoe Curve, 2007). They’re currently in rehearsals, adapting the arrangements to suit the current configuration and working on several brand new compositions. Classic TAB has always functioned as breeding ground of sorts, with many of its songs eventually crossing over into Phish’s repertoire.

Alberta Cross Headlining Tour

ALBERTA CROSS TOUR IN SUPPORT OF HIGHLY ACCLAIMED DEBUT BROKEN SIDE OF TIME

HEADLINING DATES CONFIRMED FOR JANUARY/FEBRUARY

“The seismic guitars and high vocals look to My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon and Crazy Horse… but Alberta Cross sets aside those American bands’ redemptive undercurrents of blues and gospel; instead it plunges into the very English despair of bands like Pink Floyd.” — The New York Times

“Channeling Neil Young… the sound of deliverance.” — Esquire

Alberta Cross

Alberta Cross kicks off a nationwide tour this January. Supported by San Antonio-based folk-rockers Hacienda, Alberta Cross will be headlining venues such as Bowery Ballroom in New York, Schubas in Chicago and Troubadour in Los Angeles. They are touring in support of their much-anticipated ATO Records debut, Broken Side of Time, which is receiving widespread acclaim. The New York Times applauds their “British take on Southern rock,” and NPR declares them “…familiar and refreshing …Alberta Cross has taken incredible strides to earn global recognition.” Likewise, they were recently featured as a Breaking Artist in Rolling Stone, which praises them for “combining wind tunnels of bent guitar riffs and distorted power chords with the haunting melodies of rural American music. It’s all topped by Ericson Stakee’s sweet, high-lonesome voice, which recalls both Jim James and Neil Young.”

Broken side of Time arrives on the heels of their acclaimed EP The Thief & the Heartbreaker, which earned the band U.K. touring slots with Oasis, The Shins and Bat For Lashes, and widespread critical praise, including PopMatters, which declared, “The seven-song EP is one of the best you’ll be lucky enough to pick up, resembling a full album’s quality but leaving one wanting a lot more.” It also follows a summer of festivals and U.K. dates, including noteworthy performances at Bonnaroo, Coachella, Glastonbury and more.
