Intel Increases Renewable Energy Credit Purchase to 2.5 Billion Kilowatt Hours

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Intel increased its renewable energy credit purchase to 2.5 billion kilowatt hours, a 75 percent increase over its 2010 commitment.
  • Intel has completed nine solar electric installations at Intel locations in four U.S. states and Israel, collectively generating approximately 3.8 million kilowatt hours per year of clean solar energy.
  • Intel, whose renewable energy credit purchase will exceed 85 percent of its estimated U.S. electricity use, was again named the largest voluntary purchaser of green power by the EPA.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 1, 2011 – Building on years of support for renewable energy generation, Intel Corporation today announced that it will purchase 2.5 billion kilowatt hours of renewable energy credits (RECs) in 2011. This commitment is a 75 percent increase over its 2010 commitment of 1.43 billion kilowatt hours and equates to more than 85 percent of Intel’s estimated purchased electricity needs in the United States for 2011. In addition, Intel has completed nine solar electric installations at Intel locations in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oregon and Israel, collectively generating more than 3.8 million kilowatt hours per year of clean solar energy.

“Intel’s renewable energy efforts are meant to spur the market and make renewables cheaper and more accessible, in turn helping to reduce the overall carbon emissions from electric generation,” said Brian Krzanich, senior vice president and general manager of Manufacturing and Supply Chain for Intel. “Intel’s REC purchases, support for solar installations and other clean energy investments will continue to be priorities for us as we search for effective sustainability opportunities around the globe.”

Intel first purchased RECs, the “currency” of renewable energy markets, and became the largest purchaser of green power in the United States1 with a 1.3 billion kilowatt hour commitment in 2008. Its 2011 purchase corresponds to the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of nearly 218,000 average American homes or nearly 202 million gallons of gasoline consumed.2 As a result of Intel’s continued commitment to purchase RECs, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) again placed Intel at the top of its Green Power Partner List for 2011 as the largest voluntary, single purchaser of green power in the country. Intel was previously honored with the EPA’s Green Power Leadership Award.

In January 2010, Intel first announced its plans to construct eight solar projects across four states. Along with Intel’s first international solar electric project – a 50 kilowatt roof installation in Jerusalem – these projects are now complete and generating clean power for use at Intel facilities. The projects are a variety of types, including a massive 1-megawatt solar field that spans nearly six acres of land on Intel’s Folsom, Calif. campus, four rooftop installations and four solar support structures in Intel parking lots. Each of the U.S. installations, which were completed and are operated by Foster City, Calif.-based SolarCity, currently ranks among the 10 largest solar installations in its respective utility territory. The RECs generated by these installations are typically transferred to the local utility to support their regulatory obligations and programs.

Intel’s reaffirmed commitment to purchasing RECs and facilitating the nine solar electric installations is just the latest in Intel’s energy portfolio, which includes wind, solar, geo-thermal, small hydro-electric and biomass sources. Since 2001, Intel has invested over $45 million and completed approximately 1,500 projects to improve energy efficiency and resource conservation, saving roughly 790 million kilowatt hours of energy — enough to power nearly 69,000 average American homes for a year.3 Other highlights include:

Investments: Intel is dedicated to clean technology innovation and development.
  • As part of Intel’s broader objective to spur market demand for renewable energy, smart grid, home energy management and energy efficiency in enterprise, commercial, industrial and residential applications, Intel Capital, Intel’s global investment arm, has invested more than $150 million in approximately 20 clean technology businesses.

Operations: Intel continues to look for renewable energy and energy efficiency opportunities across its many locations.

Employee Engagement: Intel believes that employee engagement and empowerment are critical to its objective of embedding sustainability more deeply into the business.
  • Since 2008, Intel has linked a portion of every employee’s variable compensation — from front-line employees to the CEO — to the achievement of environmental sustainability metrics in three areas: energy efficiency of products, reductions in carbon footprint and energy use and improvements in environmental leadership reputation metrics.
  • As a key element of the solar installations at Intel’s facilities, awareness kiosks are set up in each site lobby to educate and engage employees in the company’s energy efforts.

Intel’s REC purchase will be handled by Sterling Planet, a national supplier of renewable energy, energy efficiency and low-carbon solutions. All purchases will be certified by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions’ Green-e® program, which certifies and verifies green power products, and meet the requirements of the EPA Green Power Purchasing Program.

Bloodbath as bomber rips through Quetta rally

QUETTA – As many as 59 people were killed and over 120 including seven journalists suffered serious injuries in a deadly suicide blast, targeting Youm-al-Quds rally at Meezan Chowk of the provincial capital on Friday.
Banned religious outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi has accepted responsibility for the attack. Unruly protesters burnt vehicles, ransacked public properties, shops and fired gunshots on media persons.
Hundreds of people from Shia community while leading a rally opposing IsraelÂ’s control of Jerusalem and showing solidarity with Palestinians were passing from Meezan Chowk when a suicide bomber blew himself up right in the middle of the procession. As a result, over 40 people died on the spot and more than 120 people suffered serious wounds. Heavy firing was also heard soon after the blast while several shops were also damaged due to the blast.
The injured and the deceased were shifted to Civil Hospital, Bolan Medical Complex Hospital and Combined Military Hospital where another 15 injured succumbed to their wounds.
An emergency was declared in all government hospitals following the suicide blast. Hospital sources said that 11 bodies were brought to Civil Hospital, 44 to CMH and four were moved to BMC. However, official sources confirmed only 43 casualties.
Driver of a private TV channel namely Sarwar was also killed in the blast while seven journalists, including Noor Elahi Bugti, Ejaz Raisani, Fateh Shakir, Mustafa Tareen, Shahid, Irshad Mastoi and Imran Muktiar suffered serious wounds. After the blast, a large number of people suffered injuries due to stampede in the procession.
Sources said that several people also sustained injuries due to firing that followed the blast. The victims of the blast were shifted to hospital in rickshaws and other available vehicles owing to shortage of ambulances at the blast scene. The critical injured were later shifted to CMH after getting first-aid in Civil Hospital.
Some deceased were identified as Gul Muhammad, Muhammad Javed, Hussain Ali, Naseebullah, Imran, Talib Hussain, Mehdi Hussain, Muhammad Hussain, Syed Abass, Raza Zargar, Ejaz Sarwar, Jalil Ahmed, Barat Ali and Raja Anwar.
The blast was far more deadly and people were seen lying in pools of blood everywhere. “I was witnessing the rally which was heading towards Meezan Chowk when suddenly a huge explosion followed by intense firing took place and people started running helter-skelter,” an eyewitness told TheNation.
Another witness, Naseer Ahmed, that he heard the blast on his way from Shahra-e-Iqbal. “I headed towards the direction of the blast after a few seconds, I heard gunshots, and immediately left the area,” he said. Soon after the blast, shopkeepers pulled down shutters in all main markets and people starting running towards their homes while the public transport disappeared and many people, who had come to the bazaar, had to travel on foot.
In the meantime, several groups of furious people started attacking the public property and vehicles in different areas of the City. More than five vehicles, including a vehicle of security forces and five motorcycles and several shops were set on fire. The infuriated protestors who had gathered outside Civil Hospital Quetta blocked Jinnah Road and also made gunshots on journalists who were covering the incident. However, luckily they remained unhurt in the attack.
Police sources said that when the rally reached Alamdar Road, DIG (Operations) Hamid Shakeel and some other police officers stopped participants from heading towards Meezan Chowk due to security threats but instead of following the instruction they attacked police with sticks and marched towards Meezan Chowk.
IG Balochistan Malik Mohammad Iqbal told the media that the police had earlier tried to stop the rally from going towards Meezan Chowk citing security concerns but the participants refused to follow the instructions. “There were some intelligence reports about any unpleasant incident that is why the rally was requested to follow the planned route but they refused to do so,” he added.
Sources said that due to Juma prayers already foolproof security arrangements were made as police backed by Balochistan Constabulary, Anti-Terrorist Force and Frontier Corps were deployed outside all imambargahs and mosques while tight security arrangements were also made at Meezan Chowk. “Police had also placed barricades to stop procession towards Meezan Chowk but they broke them and the tragic incident occurred,” they added.
Police sources said that head and other body parts of alleged suicide bomber had been recovered from the blast site who was aged between 20 and 22 and further investigations were underway.
Bomb Disposal Squad officials said the bomber used suicide vest weighing 10 to 15 kg to carry out the attack.
Meanwhile, Spokesman of banned religious outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Ali Sher Haideri calling from unspecified location via satellite phone claimed responsibility for the suicide attack on the rally of Youm-al-Quds.
Governor Balochistan Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi and Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raisani have condemned the suicide attack and expressed grief over the loss of precious lives in the incident.
On the other hand, Chairman Tahaffuz Azadari Council Pakistan Muhammad Rahim Jaffari strongly condemned the suicide blast and described it failure of provincial government. He announced observing 40 days of mourning over the tragic incident and a shutter-down strike on Saturday (today) in Quetta.

Israel marks Jerusalem Day

Israel is celebrating the 43rd anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, VOA reported. At the same time, the city’s boundaries continue to be a source of tension between Israel and the Palestinians.

A wall of suspicion

Despite a rare dressing down from America, Israel’s leader shows no sign of yielding

GLUM Israelis likened the event to thieves entering in the night. When Binyamin Netanyahu and his aides met Barack Obama in the White House on March 23rd, the president forbade any media coverage—not even a quick photograph—in the Oval Office. The encounter with Israel’s prime minister did not seem to lead to the jovial reconciliation that politicians on both sides, after a fortnight of angry mud-slinging between Washington and Jerusalem, had hoped for.

The format was as odd as the extreme confidentiality. After the two leaders had sat alone for an hour-and-a-half, Mr Netanyahu closeted himself to “consult” his advisers, before returning for another half-hour discussion. Did Mr Obama, riding high after his historic victory over health care, choose to confront the silver-tongued Israeli prime minister with an unequivocal challenge to lay out his policy on peace with the Palestinians—and to back down over the controversial issue of building Jewish houses in Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem, which Palestinians see as the capital of their would-be state? …

Netanyahu rejects U.S. demand on settlements

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected U.S. demands that the Jewish state freeze Jewish settlements around Jerusalem. The Israeli leader was speaking before departing for the United States where he is to address a pro-Israel lobby and meet with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Where did all the love go?

Barack Obama has lost patience with Israel. But neither side dares risk a break-up

IT HAS been like a lovers’ tiff without the love—quickly tamped down but with none of the kissing and making up, and no soothing of the underlying rage. As Palestinian violence flared in Jerusalem, Barack Obama’s secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, said through gritted teeth on March 16th that Israel and America enjoyed “a close, unshakable bond”. On the same day Michael Oren, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, claimed he had been “flagrantly misquoted” in a widely reported leak that he had called the quarrel the worst crisis between the allies for 35 years.

It is nonetheless plain that relations between Israel and the Obama administration are indeed in crisis. The spark was last week’s approval by Israel’s interior ministry of 1,600 new homes in Ramat Shlomo, a Jewish suburb in East (Palestinian) Jerusalem. This coincided not only with a visit by Vice-President Joe Biden but also with the eve of the “proximity talks” America had at last persuaded Mahmoud Abbas to enter with Binyamin (“Bibi”) Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister. Mr Biden is known for his affection towards Israel but took the announcement as a gratuitous insult. So did Mrs Clinton, who on March 12th berated Mr Netanyahu for three-quarters of an hour on the phone. She reportedly told Mr Biden to “condemn” the announcement rather than merely “express concern”. …
