Gathering of the Vibes 2010 | Photos

Gathering of the Vibes :: 07.29.10-08.01.10 :: Seaside Park ::
Bridgeport, CT

Amidst a sea of tie-dye and Dead-y emanations, another Gathering of the Vibes went
down this past weekend. An unusually sunny, cloudless sky loomed over Bridgeport,
Connecticut’s Seaside Park for four straight days this past weekend, making the 2010 GOTV
a great success. Oh, and the music was fantastic too. From festival regulars like Dark Star Orchestra,
Donna Jean
Godchaux
and Max Creek to Jimmy Cliff, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Damian “Jr. Gong”
Marley
& Nas
and a newly reunited Primus (with
original drummer Jay Lane, who has also played with RatDog and Furthur), the
diverse lineup was nothing short of stellar.

Day One was off to a good start, with DSO, the Quincy Mumford Band, Donna Jean, and the
New Riders of the
Purple Sage
on the festival’s main stage – all celebrating the life and legacy of
Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. The party continued on the Green Vibes Stage until
the wee hours of the morning with Big Sam’s Funky Nation. Day Two saw more gorgeous weather, more
dancing, and more bands like Jackie Greene, Steve Kimock Crazy Engine, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Robert Randolph,
and the highly anticipated Furthur performance. Aside from a few lyrical flubs on Bob
Weir
‘s part, the two sets were packed with tight jams and beautiful musicianship. They
closed the evening with an exceptional encore of “Lady with a Fan > Terrapin > At a Siding
> Terrapin Flyer.”

Days Three and Four were alive with energy, as Max Creek, The Rhythm Devils
with Keller
Williams
, Assembly
of Dust
, Primus, Galactic, Umphrey’s McGee, Little Feat, Jimmy Cliff, and a festival closer of Damian Marley &
Nas. While the burnt, worn-out crowd normally thins out on the last day of the Vibes, the
concert field remained packed with fans in high spirits, willing and able to continue the
party. It looks like Gathering of the Vibes 2011 might be well underway already.

Jerry Garcia Band: Let It Rock

JERRY GARCIA BAND WILL LET IT ROCK

Double-Disc Collection Includes Rare Early Performances Of The Group’s Original Lineup
Featuring Legendary Pianist Nicky Hopkins, Recorded Live In Berkeley, November 1975

For Jerry Garcia, 1975 was a seminal year that found him splitting time between recording Blues for Allah with the Dead, directing The Grateful Dead Movie, and forming the Jerry Garcia Band – his long-running side project. JGB’s earliest days are the subject of a two-disc live collection recorded during that momentous year. THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 2: LET IT ROCK, JERRY GARCIA BAND, NOVEMBER 17 & 18, 1975, KEYSTONE BERKELEY will be available November 10 from Jerry Garcia Family/Rhino at physical retail outlets and at www.dead.net for a suggested list price of $19.98.

The Jerry Garcia Band – Garcia, his constant collaborator bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt – played its first show with Nicky Hopkins on piano in August 1975. The ultimate session player, Hopkins’ credits include work with The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Jefferson Airplane to name a very few. While Hopkins residency was brief with the Jerry Garcia Band, it played an important role in the group’s shift away from big jams toward song-oriented material.

In addition to being a brilliant songwriter himself, Garcia had a great ear for other people’s songs and the new band provided him an opportunity to explore others’ works. LET IT ROCK includes covers of Chuck Berry (“Let It Rock”), Little Milton (“That’s What Love Will Make You Do”) and Jimmy Cliff (“Sitting In Limbo”). It also features performances of Allen Toussaint’s “I’ll Take A Melody” and Hank Ballard’s “Tore Up Over You,” songs that would surface a few months later on Garcia’s Reflections (1976). In addition to other artists’ songs, the band dips briefly into the Dead canon for “Friend Of The Devil” and Garcia’s 1972 solo debut for “Sugaree.” Three Hopkins originals are featured as well, “Pig’s Boogie,” “Lady Sleeps,” and the curiously titled “Edward, The Mad Shirt Grinder,” a song Hopkins first performed with Quicksilver Messenger Service.

While it is not strictly speaking a complete show, THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 2 is sequenced to approximate a two-set club gig, highlighting performances recorded November 17 and 18, 1975, during a pair of intimate gigs at Keystone Berkeley in front of a hometown crowd. The shows demonstrate that this lineup was capable of collective improvisation on the same level as the Grateful Dead, says David Gans, host of the Grateful Dead Hour. “Everybody could play melody or rhythm, or both, at any time, flying in and out of formation and always in intimate relation to what the others were playing,” he writes in the collection’s liner notes.

Monday Melody: Jimmy Cliff

BY AND BY, THEY’RE ON THEIR WAY

Jimmy Cliff

Some voices are ideal for pulling us into positivity, and Jimmy Cliff seems put on Earth with this purpose in mind. While nearly anyone with ears is familiar with “I Can See Clearly Now,” there’s a river of joyful music inside this man. We present y’all with one of our faves, “Better Days Are Coming,” off 1975′s Struggling Man, an under-heard sleeper in Cliff’s huge catalog, to help motivate you as another week gets rolling.

Michael Houser: 7 Years Gone
We Remember The Lingering Lead

By: Kayceman

Michael Houser: 7 Years Gone – We Remember The Lingering Lead

January 6, 1962 – August 10, 2002

It’s hard to believe Michael Houser and his lingering lead have been gone for seven years. As we remember the original lead guitarist for Widespread Panic we thought there was no better way to honor the man than to see him in action. Enjoy the burn…

New Orleans 2001 (10/27/01): We start with what just might be Panic’s finest moment ever. Impossible to quantify and completely ridiculous to even try, perhaps it’s better to say that this is my favorite Panic moment of all time. From October 27, 2001 (my favorite Panic year as a whole) at the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, LA, this is the dirty-dirty. Mikey just lets it cry while JB and Schools push “Bowlegged Woman” into P-Funk’s “Tear The Roof Off The Sucker (Give Up The Funk),” The Who‘s “Eminence Front,” Jackson 5′s “I’ll Be There” and Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.” At this point in music’s history, Widespread Panic was as good as any band anywhere. If Houser hadn’t lost his battle to pancreatic cancer there’s no limit to what they could have achieved. And that is absolutely no crack at the current, very impressive incarnation of the band. But just check this out…

Bonnaroo 2002 (6/22/02): We all knew Houser was dying. It was just the sad fucking truth, but what do you do with that knowledge? Houser kept playing and so did the fans. We danced and cried and tried to live in the moment. In less than two months he would no longer be with us. During their headlining Bonnaroo blowout out comes Dottie Peoples and The People’s Choice Choir for “Tall Boy” > “Testify” > “Tall Boy.” It was a special, emotional moment. Speaking to bassist Dave Schools years later he says he couldn’t believe how well Houser was playing, and during the church tent gospel rave-up of “Testify” he remembers looking out over the crowd and they were “levitating.” It was a night I’ll never forget and it brings tears to my eyes to this day. (Check out full coverage of this show here.)

Red Rocks 2002 (6/28/02): Epic Emotional Shows. A thin, frail Mikey just over a month before his death plays inspired guitar at the legendary venue for a crowd of crying, celebrating faithful. Here they are laying out “The Waker,” a song Houser wrote for his son Waker. At this point Mikey has barely enough strength to sing, but his guitar work is still overpowering and the context of this show matched by the way Houser looks is enough to break the strongest of men.

Halloween 2001 (10/31/01): For this clip we head to Halloween 2001 in Austin for “Surprise Valley.” A peak period for Panic as they were extremely tight and adventurous, Houser was slowly getting sick but no one had any idea at this point.

6/21/97: We drop back to 1997, another incredibly potent time for the band. Check this nasty ass funk where they turn JJ Cale‘s “Ride Me High” on its ear (the video isn’t the best, but the audio is solid).

Atlanta 1990: We go all the way back to the days when Houser stood! This track was filmed on July, 27 1990 at Atlanta’s Cotton Club and features the very rare Mikey instrumental “Sun Keep.”

10/30/93 – Athens, GA: Still in the Houser Standing Period, this 1993 version of the Mikey-heavy “Pilgrims” (check that classic Mikey chord progression) from the Georgia Theatre doesn’t have the best video quality, but the audio is obviously where it’s at anyway.

Athens 1998: Here’s a taste of “Love Tractor” from 1998. Hmmm… ’98 was a fun time to see Widespread Panic, they hadn’t reached the stadiums yet, but their sound had and fans got to see them play intimate theaters.

9/29/89 – UGA: Now we go WAY back to the infant stages of WSP with a 1989 version of “Worry” from the Chi Phi House at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA.

Red Rocks 2000 (6/24/00): Always epic shows, here we jump back to summer 2000 for Panic on the Rocks with a filthy “Arleen.”

New Orleans 2001 (10/27/01): We head back to NOLA for that insane October 27, 2001 show (same as the “Bowlegged” that we began with). Here, we witness Jimmy Cliff‘s “The Harder They Come.” Just one thought of Mikey and you know it’s true – the harder they come, the harder they fall…

Finally, we have Mikey and JB sitting on the porch playing part of the Panic classic “Driving Song.” Dig the vibe and just think about what it was like 15 years earlier when Mikey and JB met at the University of Georgia and sat on a different porch writing these songs and dreaming this dream.

Toubab Krewe Release “Fire”: Tour with Earl Smith

Toubab Krewe launches the second wave of summer tour with release of “Fire”
A new single featuring Jamaican legends Lukani, Earl Smith and Leroy Wallace

Toubab Krewe

Fresh from widely praised performances at Rothbury (read our review here), where members of the band joined The Dead on percussion during their headlining July 4th set, Toubab Krewe launches into the second leg of their summer tour with the release of a new single, “Fire.” The collaborative new song was recorded recently at reggae guitar legend Earl Smith‘s front porch home-studio in Kingston, Jamaica and features Lukani (vocals), Smith (guitar) and Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace (drums).

Toubab Krewe kicks off the tour aboard the first annual Toubab Kruise in New York City on July 15. The band will bring its dance-party inducing fusion of rock ‘n’ roll and West African music to the boat as it sails along the East River, heading through the New York Harbor to the Statue of Liberty.

Special guest Earl Smith will join Toubab Krewe on guitar at all of the upcoming shows through August 1. Perhaps the most sought after guitarist in reggae, Smith has performed and recorded with everyone from Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh and Burning Spear to more recent pop icons like Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu and Joss Stone.

Toubab Krewe plans to spend much of August in the studio recording a new full length album (details TBA).

An extensive fall tour is also in the works, with confirmed dates including the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco (October 8) and the Joshua Tree Music Festival (October 10).

A short video taken of the band’s time in Jamaica during the recording can be seen here:
