Nels Cline Singers Tour

HIGH SIERRA, PHILLY, NYC AND WILCO’S OWN FEST ON AGENDA

Nels Cline Singers

The Nels Cline Singers first planned tour dates to support their new release, Initiate (arriving April 13). These dates include the band’s first ever South American tour, an appearance at the High Sierra Music Festival, a full night at New York City’s (le) poisson rouge, a night in Philadelphia at Johnny Brenda’s, the Singers’ first ever Washington, D.C. date at The Black Cat, and finally, an appearance in August in Western Massachusetts at Mass MoCA as part of the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival. More tour dates, including a West Coast run will be announced at a later date.

Initiate, the Singers’ fourth release and Cline’s seventh as a leader for Cryptogramophone, approaches the concept of Yin and Yang with a series of firsts for both the group and its intrepid leader, slyly dubbed by JazzTimes as “The World’s Most Dangerous Guitarist.” Initiate, in a beautifully designed, six-panel digipak featuring Simon Norfolk’s gorgeous photographs of the world’s largest machine (the Large Hadron Collider at CERN) is Cline’s first double album, with its second disc culled from a September 2009 performance at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco, the Singers’ first live recording. Nels Cline Singers are Nels Cline (guitar), Scott Amendola (drums, electronics) and Devin Hoff (bass). Guests on the live disc include Yuka Honda (Cibo Matto), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), John Dieterich (Deerhoof) and Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof).

Nels will also make his Village Vanguard debut as a sideman with his longtime friend and musical associate violinist Jenny Scheinman [a JamBase fave along with Nels and his Singers] with her band Mischief and Mayhem July 13-18.

Hockey | 03.16 | Philadelphia

Words by: Jennifer Minsky | Images by: Mitch Manzella

Hockey :: 03.16.10 :: Johnny Brenda’s :: Philadelphia, PA

Hockey :: 03.16 :: Philadelphia, PA

As they say in real estate, location is everything. This tenet speaks to the dichotomy between the Philadelphia and New York City music scenes. The latter brings sold out crowds, as folks are eager to absorb newness and word of mouth spreads quickly. Furthermore, if you wanted to see your favorite band, they almost always play NYC. It seems that times are changing, however, as Philly has been attracting more and more acts with comparable venues. Case in point: Johnny Brenda’s, a fabulous atmosphere for music lovers with its multi-level viewing areas and unpretentious charm. This is where Hockey and opener The Postelles lost their Philly virginity.

The Postelles tried their best to ready everyone for the night ahead. While they played to a smaller crowd, the band nevertheless provided poppy beats a la early Strokes. It is important, and amusing to note that The Constellations were slated to perform as well but decided that SXSW was a more essential place to be.

Most likely you haven’t heard of Hockey, or if you have, it was probably through their breakthrough performance at last year’s Bonnaroo Festival. Their music is a somewhat complex mixture of derivativeness and novelty, but in summary, they sound like a modernized version of the Happy Mondays in their heyday. Thus, a combination of rock/dance/electro with lyrics that are assertive and uncomplicated (“Look out! Cause I’m just too fake for the world”).

The image singer Benjamin Grubin (who looks somewhat eerily similar to Corey Haim), guitarist Brian White, bassist Jeremy Reynolds, drummer Anthony Stassi and keyboardist Ryan Dolliver purport is a retro ’80s vibe (DayGlo shirts, hooded denim jackets, frilly mustaches). Hockey started their 12-song set with “Work.” Grubin’s voice resonated throughout the entire venue with soul and commitment. I kept wondering how his performance would be if the stage was larger, but as it was, all five members were crammed together. Thus, all Grubin could do was a bit of swaggering and intense microphone grabbing. He did, however, accompany Stassi on the drums throughout many of the songs, which provided extra texture and excitement.

The band played through a chunk of material from their debut album, Mind Chaos, and stayed close to the arrangements; there was no real improvisation or extended jams. The set was a mix of energy and calmness with songs like “Preacher” and two brand new songs that were slower and poetic. Highlights included the debut single “Too Fake” and “3am Spanish,” which got the somewhat reticent crowd moving. Other offerings included “Learn to Lose,” “Song Away,” “Four Holy Photos” and “Curse This City.” The band is currently touring the States, including an appearance at Coachella.

Fruit Bats/Blue Giant | 3.21 | Philadelphia

Words & Images by: Jake Krolick

Fruit Bats & Blue Giant :: 03.21.10 :: Johnny Brenda’s :: Philadelphia, PA

Fruit Bats :: 03.21 :: Philadelphia, PA

Folk is enjoying its climb back into the mainstream music saddle, but just because it’s cool to grow your beard, strum out melodies and sing harmonies doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take notice of this new wave of folk music. By now some of you are saying, “Hey what-the-fuck, we’ve been into this since discovering our parents’ vinyl copies of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” As bands like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver have caught the ears of many, helping reinvigorate the genre, other outfits such as Fruit Bats have snuck in the backdoor creating equally pleasing folk pop contributions. These Illinois to Oregon transplants slid under the radar and played a weekend eve in Philly to a small crowd, where they reminded us it’s high time to catch up on some of the other artists rewriting the folk genre.

The opening band, Oregon’s Blue Giant, is somewhat of a Portland folk super-group. They had recorded with Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney and their ex-pedal steel wiz was Chris Funk of a little band called The Decemberists. Today, Blue Giant is a mix of musicians from the original lineup including Kevin and Anita Robinson from Viva Voce, drummer Evan Railton of Swords, and a few others.

Sunday found Blue Giant in a playful mood as they jammed on a jovial mix of country rock, the kind you’d expect to find along Route 70 at some dive in America’s heartland. The Robinsons were as fun to watch as they were to listen to. During “Target Heart,” the title track off their 2009 EP, Anita dug into her electric guitar and fearlessly played edgy swirls of notes while husband Kevin smoothed the song over by thrusting his acoustic guitar upward and accentuating his powerful vocals. With Anita’s heavy handed strum and Kevin’s direct approach, the pair sounded a lot like Mark and David Knopfler playing a country version of “Money for Nothing.” Kevin remarked that we were perhaps the most civilized crowd they’d seen and gave an extra special thank you to the Romanesque balcony mob for not stoning Blue Giant to death. They finished by playing a few interesting covers including The Kinks’ “Johnny Thunder” and an amazing version of The Byrds’ “Wasn’t Born to Follow.”

Johnny Brenda’s has a way of eating up any genre it holds under its massive spinning disco ball. The lights reflected out in a slow dance of twirling circles that combined with a breezy version of the Fruit Bats’ “Primitive Man” and lulled the crowd into a wide eyed gaze. We were completely surrounded by spinning illumination and melodies that danced together as partners. Their coexistence created an eerie effect on the spectators and the ornate wooden decor. I discovered Fruit Bats’ latest album, The Ruminant Band, last year during a stretch of Indian summer. For several weeks I found myself stretched out in the backyard listening to guitarist, pianist and singer Eric Johnson and his Fruit Bats. It was nearly impossible to turn an ear away from their cheery melodies, lyrics and interesting instrumental arrangements. As their music fused with my routine of spending the last warm evenings outside, I realized that I was completely consumed with the nostalgic feelings brought on by this new age of folk music.

Fruit Bats :: 03.21 :: Philadelphia, PA

This show was an extension of those September backyard sessions. As Johnson played the piano and sang, he brought back the same recognizable feelings, a rush of images, each faded like a photograph of moments past, a soundtrack to the setting sun, one that fits best with crimsons, oranges and yellows as they burn away with the last bits of daylight. It was a few moments before I realized that I’d been lost in my own traveling thoughts as the lyrics of “Tegucigalpa” washed over me in a rush of sunset folk.

“My family moved us ever northward up to the terra borealis/ Along the crooked pikes of the ruminants and voyageurs/ But my heart belongs to the smoke of Hamilton and Monongahela/ And all the dirty cities along the way”

One of the greatest reasons to love this band is an implausible ease inside their dusty melodies and strangely familiar lyrics. Sunday evening the Fruit Bats filled our anxious minds with soothing pastoral melodies.

Fruit Bats aren’t new. They formed in 1999 as a side project for Johnson, but they soon became his heart and soul after the release of the band’s debut, Echolocation. A few follow-up records, Mouthfuls and Spelled in Bone, added to the Fruit Bats’ accomplishments. After seeing them play live it was clear that both Johnson’s time away from Fruit Bats with The Shins and his band’s time off the road were well spent. Highlights of the set, which was pretty wonderful in its entirety, included outstanding versions of “Feather Bed” and “Ruminant Band.” Each song glowed with a vintage rock feel that pulsed just below the surface directed by guitarist and Tim Bluhm look-a-like Sam Wagster‘s gravelly electric work and drummer Graeme Gibson‘s nonchalant thumping.

Before the evening let us back into her arms Johnson showed just how captivating a man and a guitar could be as he performed a solo version of “Beautiful Morning Light.” His voice was as strong as ever and it quivered with hope and energy. It’s that hope that has others and myself taking notice and looking for more of these moments to latch onto.

Fruit Bats are currently on a westward tour until June; dates below.

Janelle Monáe: Debut Album w/ Big Boi, Saul Williams, Diddy

Janelle Monáe Releases Debut Album The ArchAndroid

Janelle Monáe

Wondaland Arts Society/Bad Boy recording artist Janelle Monáe has announced the release of her debut album. The ArchAndroid will arrive in stores and at all DSPs on May 18.

The ArchAndroid is an “Emotion Picture” brought to you by Janelle Monáe and the Mad Minds of the Wondaland Arts Society. The star-studded cast includes the legendary Big Boi of OutKast, renowned poet Saul Williams, psychedelic dance-punk troupe Of Montreal, punk prophets Deep Cotton, and the Wondaland Arch Orchestra.

The album was recorded at Wondaland Studios in Atlanta, but written all over the world, including but not limited to Moscow, Prague, Istanbul, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York, and the Palace of the Dogs. The ArchAndroid was inspired not only by the energy of these places, but by such revolutionary musicians and artistic visionaries as Salvador Dalí, Walt Disney, OutKast, Stevie Wonder, Octavia Butler, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, and John Williams. The album was Executive Produced by Nate Wonder, Chuck Lightning, Janelle Monáe, and Sean “Diddy” Combs, with Co-Executive Production from Big Boi of OutKast.

The ArchAndroid follows the Grammy Award-nominated artist’s two acclaimed EPs, 2008′s Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition) and Metropolis: Suite I of IV.

Monáe is set to join this summer’s much anticipated 2010 Lilith Tour, joining a star-studded array of female artists including Sarah MacLachlan, Norah Jones, Mary J. Blige, Loretta Lynn, Tegan & Sara, Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat, and many others.

Praise for Cymbals Eat Guitars:
“You could blame it on so many bands being from autophobic NYC, or that the Pacific Northwest gods of indie are still going too strong to already be a primary influence, but neither would explain New York’s Cymbals Eat Guitars’ Why There Are Mountains. While there’s plenty of geographical signifiers on their debut, it’s almost topographic in its approach, without hooks and choruses so much as map-like layouts of mountains and sloping valleys.” – Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“The most obvious thing about Cymbals Eat Guitars is that their epic, widescreen indie rock bears a striking resemblance to that of Built To Spill and early Modest Mouse.” – Fluxblog

Molina and Johnson: Tour/Album

MOLINA AND JOHNSON Announce Early 2010 U.S. Tour

Offer Up New MP3, Album Now Available For Pre-Order

Molina and Johnson

It was an all-too-rare alignment of stars that brought prolific, new American songwriters Jason Molina and Will Johnson together some time ago to record the aptly titled Molina and Johnson (set for release on November 3) under the big Texas sky. Lucky for all of us, it will happen again in early 2010 for a full-on, intimate U.S tour. Following a string of European live dates that begin in November, Molina and Johnson will convene in late January to loop from Texas around the Southeast, East Coast and Midwest, returning to the Lone Star State again. On each of the U.S. dates, the duo will be joined by Chris Brokaw (Come/Codeine).

Currently, Johnson is hitting the skins on the Monsters of Folk tour, while Molina just wrapped up a tear across Europe with Magnolia Electric Co.

To go along with the U.S. tour announcement, Molina and Johnson are sharing one of the true-blue duets from their collaboration. Even on an album chock-full of heartbreakers, “Almost Let You In” offers up its fair share of cutting moments. “Granted that I ever, ever stop playing to win, could you find it in the cards to bring me to the light?” is the plea to what could be a woman or a higher being (or both). Mid-song, the atmospheric guitar, acoustic strums and tambourine taps all cut out for the soft rap of fingertips on the body of an acoustic guitar for a moment of real reflection.

Molina and Johnson will be released by Secretly Canadian next week, on November 3 (Nov. 2 in the U.K.) on CD/LP/Digital formats. The album is now available for pre-order HERE.

Hidden Cameras: New LP & Tour

Canadian Folkers Hidden Camera Trek Across North America

Behind Their Fourth LP Origin:Orphan

Hidden Cameras

The experimental folk outfit Hidden Cameras have just announced a massive North American tour in support of their fourth full-length, Origin:Orphan. Fans can purchase tickets at galleryac.com. As a bonus, in anticipation of the new album and tour, fans who purchase tickets will immediately receive a free digital download of the newly released five-track In The NA.

Origin:Orphan was recorded in Berlin, Germany and Toronto, and delves into new musical territory. The dark synths of the title track and dominant orchestration of “Walk On” counterbalance the upbeat playfulness of “In The NA” and “Underage.” The Hidden Cameras, who have always been known for their celebratory live performances, often take to churches and art galleries, with forty-piece dance troupes. The Band even performed in Munich, Germany during the halftime of a Bayern-Munich soccer game in front of a crowd of over 100,000.
