EC concerned over attacks on journalists in Russia

The European Commission expressed on Monday “a very profound concern” over the amount of attacks on journalists in Russia.
Early on Saturday, Oleg Kashin, a journalist at the respected Kommersant daily, was severely beaten by unidentified assailants near his house in Moscow. He suffered severe head and leg injuries and is currently in an induced coma. Reports also say he had a finger cut off.

EFJ urges Turkey to free journalists

Journalists currently in jail in Turkey must be set free immediately, says the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ).
This should take place if the movement towards key changes in the country’s constitution is to deliver promises of democracy and freedom.

Ministry in “dos and don’ts for journalists”

Journalists left a press conference on Tuesday in Belgrade at which the Health Ministry was presenting its draft for proper manner of reporting on medicine. The document, put together by the ministry, was created by an expert group of two doctors and three journalists, though no one at the ministry said who assigned these people to draft the rules.

The OSCE mission and U.S. embassy in Serbia have called on the prosecution to investigate in detail threats made against journalists. “Attacks and threats against the freedom of the media cannot be tolerated. The current and past incidents and crimes against journalists must be seriously investigated and the appropriate measures must be taken,” U.S. ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick said on Wednesday, according to reports.
