STI may slip below 2,900 on weak US housing data

Singapore shares likely to slide as record drop in US existing home sales for July aggravating already-jittery investor sentiment, says Dow Jones.

If STI, which closed down 0.1% at 2,922.85 yesterday, fails to hold above 2,900, next support tipped at 2,875 (lower end of breakup gap formed July 7).

“The opening will be weak but there might be some buying on dips as the day goes on. Shares here have been holding relatively well despite the slew of disappointing US economic data in recent weeks, so we might still be able to see some resilience,” says dealer at foreign brokerage.

July manufacturing likely +6.3% on-year: Poll

Singapore’s July manufacturing output growth likely slowed sharply to +6.3% on-year vs +26.1% June after US, Europe electronics demand eased, pharmaceutical companies completed existing orders, according to median estimate in Dow Jones poll of 6 analysts, says Dow Jones.

“The sequential expansion of the electronics sector may have plateaued in July even as the sector is likely to show still healthy year-on-year growth rates due to a favourable low base effect. However, we expect weakness in pharmaceutical output to be the key reason dragging headline industrial growth,” says Standard Chartered Bank economist Alvin Liew.

Data due 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Singapore exports likely +20% on-year in July: Poll

Singapore’s July non-oil exports likely +20% on-year vs +28.7% June; pace easing on faltering global economy, according to median estimate of six analysts in Dow Jones poll.

On month, July exports likely to decline 2.7% in seasonally adjusted terms, after having shrunk 0.1% in both May and June.

“We are looking for a third consecutive month of sequential contraction in July with one difference — a deeper contraction compared to May and June,” Standard Chartered Bank economist Alvin Liew writes in note.

Liew adds, weaker exports “performance should be driven by a marked moderation in pharmaceutical exports. That said, the volatile pharmaceutical could still swing either way”.

Data due tomorrow 1:00 p.m.
