Chicago Math Magnet School Wins Intel Top Award
More than $1 Million Given to Innovative Math/Science Schools in Intel Schools of Distinction Awards
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
- The awards for the Intel Schools of Distinction were announced today in Washington, D.C., recognizing top science and math schools in the nation.
- Chicago’s Walter Payton College Prep took top prize; winners also from Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York and Virginia.
- Cash and award packages included curriculum materials, professional development resources, hardware and software from sponsors.
WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 14, 2010 – Walter Payton College Prep, a Chicago high school with a student body representing youth from more than 100 elementary schools around the city, took home the top award in the Intel Schools of Distinction contest tonight in Washington, D.C.
Other schools winning big include Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Alexandria, Va); Roxbury Preparatory Charter School (Roxbury, Mass.); Westdale Heights Academic Magnet School (Baton Rouge, La.); M.S. 223 The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology (Bronx, N.Y.); and West Elementary (Wamego, Kan.).
Intel’s education quest is to prepare tomorrow’s innovators, and the six schools honored do just that in the areas of innovative math and/or science programs. In recognition of and support for their efforts, each school won an estimated $160,000 in a combination of cash grants from the Intel Foundation and an award package including curriculum materials, professional development resources, hardware and software from program sponsors including Blackboard Collaborate, BrainwareSafari, Dell, DyKnow, I-CAN, SAS, Scantron, SMART Technologies and Tabula Digita.
“The critical knowledge base provided by math and science education is the foundation for innovation,” said Shelly Esque, vice president of Intel’s Corporate Affairs Group. “These schools imbue a deep passion for math and science in the next generation, a critical requirement for America to remain competitive in the global economy.”
The Walter Payton College Preparatory High School based in Chicago took home the Star Innovator Award, which brings an additional $15,000 from the Intel Foundation, for a total of $175,000 in cash and prizes. Payton is a citywide magnet school that serves a diverse student body and focuses on mathematics, science and world languages. Math teachers participate in lesson study and are highly engaged in collaborative processes. All courses include measurement, data analysis and modeling activities, using the same digital lab instruments used in science classes. The school schedule includes block lessons once a week and innovative, co-curricular seminars throughout the semester to engage students in the study of advanced or unusual topics.
More than a quarter of students take five or more math courses before graduation, opting for AP Statistics and university-level electives. More than 99 percent of Payton students meet or exceed state math standards. Additionally, Payton students have a 98 percent graduation rate and excel in academic competitions. The school also has an excellent record for helping students qualify for AP courses and pass AP tests.
Twelve finalists were selected from 149 applications. The 2010 finalists were from Florida, Kansas, Texas, New York, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Virginia, Louisiana, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Ohio. JamBase Questionnaire: Spiritual Rez
Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Cochemea Gastelum.
new album |
“There’s no need for introduction/ To make your body move is our function.” This inviting ‘handshake’ open “Rollin’ Dutches,” just one of numerous infectious modern reggae numbers on Nexus, the latest release from Boston-based Spiritual Rez.
The Rez sing sweet songs of lioness ladies and groovy ganja but skirt the jokiness that so often infects lighter-spirited reggae. This band possesses an abundantly inviting energy that taps into the brighter side of Bob & Ziggy Marley but also more soul & horn-infused progenitors like Johnny Nash with significant rock crunch in spots. As evidenced by Nexus, they excel at easy to like, positivity infused music, and they’ve been sharpening their skills on the touring circuit for half a decade, laying down roots everywhere they can so they might grow as strong and free as the Spaceship Tree that adorns the cover of their latest release. (Dennis Cook)
The band is on tour now and plays tonight, September 10, at Funk N Waffles in Syracuse, NY, then tomorrow at the Backwoods Pond Fest tomorrow. Next week they are at the Stone Church in Newmarket, NH on Thursday, September 16, and The Paradise in Boston with Bernie Worrell on Friday, September 17. Find full tour dates here.
Spiritual Rez is currently in competition for Jam Cruise 9′s “Vote To The Boat” contest. You can vote for them here until September 20.
Here’s what Spiritual Rez drummer Ian Miller had to say to our inquiries.

Instrument of choice: Orange Country drums & percussion
Nickname: “Meat”
1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Fulfilling live energy. Too often I see groups on stage not getting the crowd off simply because they aren’t getting themselves off..
2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
Bloodhound Gang’s One Fierce Beer Coaster, shortly followed by Foo Fighters’ The Colour and Shape.
3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
Easy Star All-Stars’ cover album Radiodread – ha ha ha, I’ve been jamming that pretty constantly.
4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
My first answer was fireman but that moved quickly to astronaut.
5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
One that involves all-ages. The whole band loves playing for children – goes back to question 1. Fulfilling. Energy. AWESOME!
6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
Come say hi and find out in person!
7. I love the sound ofÂ…
The huge flapping tarp outside our apartment’s window.
8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Pink Floyd. In my opinion it took them a few tries to get there, but damn could they meld.
9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Rhumb Lines in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. They really know how to treat the band there. We’ve played there three springs running and I believe this year it was the surf & turf for me – nothing but the most premium!
10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
Festivals, usually. Everyone is there for the music! Well, most everyone.
11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Diet. Diet. Diet. Diet.
12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
The Beatles. They just wrote better albums. Works as answer for question 8 as well.
13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
The storm cell in Kansas, which almost drove our van and trailer off the freeway with a small tornado. That sky had life and it was attempting to feast upon us! Experience + Beauty = 100 points.

String Cheese Incident | Red Rocks, CO | Photos
![]() The String Cheese Incident by Brian Spady |
It had been over a year since String Cheese Incident last assembled on a stage together. Each time they take a break these days it puts a lingering question mark in their fans’ minds but cheekily opening their 3-night Red Rocks run with a tune entitled “Can’t Stop Now” announced that there’s more to this story yet to be told. An encore opening night of “Brand New Start” further fueled the notion that SCI is entering a new phase, rejuvenated and excited by their many outside projects, and surely happy to see the smiling, gently undulating multitudes covering the hillside in front of them.
For whatever else one can say about an “Incident,” there’s no missing the warmth, camaraderie, and in-the-moment engagement of the folks on and off the stage. And the vibe had to be positively tactile revisiting fan faves like “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” “Rollover” and “Ms Brown’s Teahouse,” not to mention SCI takes on Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son,” Dylan’s “The Mighty Quinn” and Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.”
What follows is a glimpse into the fun and fine music that transpired in the Rockies this past weekend as folks await the next big String Cheese run at Horning’s Hideout, July 30-August 1. (Dennis Cook)

Pakistani Taliban behind NY bomb plot: US
NEW YORK – Senior Obama administration officials on Sunday blamed the failed attempt to blow up a bomb in Times Square on the Pakistani Taliban, in what was seen as part of a move to step up pressure on the Pakistan military to attack the militant group in North Waziristan.
“We’ve now developed evidence that shows the Pakistani Taliban was behind the attack,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in an interview on ABC television’s news programme ‘This Week’.
Later, appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he said the Taliban in Pakistan ‘directed this plot’ and may have also financed it. The Pakistani Taliban, he said, was ‘intimately involved’ in the attempt on May 1 by Faisal Shahzad, an American citizen of Pakistani descent, to blow up gasoline and propane tanks secreted inside a vehicle.
John Brennan, President ObamaÂ’s chief counterterrorism adviser, echoed HolderÂ’s statements Sunday morning, saying it appeared that Shahzad, a resident of Bridgeport, Connecticut, who spent five months in Pakistan until February, was working for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Political observers noted that Obama administration officials were now speaking out more firmly and publicly than before in an obvious attempt to build up pressure on Pakistan. Following Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warning regarding ‘severe consequences’, the US Commander in Afghanistan, Stanley McCrystal, spoke to Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, in Rawalpindi, urging him to launch an offensive in North Waziristan.
“The conclusion that the Pakistani Taliban is behind the attempted bombing underscores the serious threat that we face from a very determined enemy,” Brennan said on CNN’s “State of the Union”.
Shahzad, who was arrested at Kennedy International Airport aboard an Emirates Airlines airplane bound for Dubai little more than two days after the bomb was discovered, soon told police that he trained in Waziristan, the main base for the Pakistani Taliban and Al-Qaeda, according to US media reports.
Neither Holder nor Brennan indicated what new information led them to the firmer conclusions about the role of the Pakistani Taliban.
Brennan said Pakistan was being very cooperative in the investigation but that the US wanted to know exactly who might have been helping Shahzad.
“There are a number of terrorist and militant groups operating in Pakistan,” he said. “And we need to make sure there’s no support being given to them by the Pakistani government.”
Brennan would not say whether Shahzad may be connected to American-Yemenese Cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, other than to acknowledge that his Internet sermons are popular among extremist Muslims.
Defence Secretary Robert Gates said Pakistan had recently stepped up efforts to root out extremists.
“The Pakistanis have been doing so much more than 18 months or two years ago any of us would have expected,” Gates told reporters at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
He referred to Pak Army offensives, dating to spring 2009, against Taliban extremists in areas near the Afghan border, including in South Waziristan.
Gates said the Obama administration was sticking to its policy of offering to do as much training and other military activity inside Pakistan as the Pakistani government was willing to accept.
“It’s their country,” Gates said. “They remain in the driver’s seat, and they have their foot on the accelerator.”

Bad haircuts allowed?
There’s a GM press event taking place in the US later this week. Ed Whitacre is visiting GM’s Fairfax, Kansas assembly plant. The heads-up notice for press people tickled me a bit.
This is lifted from it:
Media are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to event start time. Appropriate footwear (low-heeled, fully closed) is required. For safety reasons, open-back, open-toe or high-heel shoes (over 1 inch) will not be permitted in the plant.
Offensively coloured or patterned shirts are not advised and bad haircuts will be mercilessly lampooned by GM public relations staff in attendance. Neck-ties should be 100% devoid of organic material. Beards will not be permitted in the plant under any circumstances. Media colleagues are reminded that the 1985 ‘GM coloured socks directive’ remains in force.
Okay, para 2 reflects my own insecurities about dress codes and appearance…
