Air-conditioning: Keeping cool and green

Innovations in air-conditioning systems mean cooling down buildings is going to require less energy

“AN ABSOLUTE dog’s breakfast” is how David Collins describes the standard of fan blades in air-conditioning systems. This might seem to be something that would vex only an engineer like Mr Collins, the boss of Synergetics Environmental Engineering, based in Melbourne, Australia. But it is a big problem. If blades were designed for better aerodynamic efficiency, instead of for being stamped from sheet metal as cheaply as possible, the electricity consumption of many cooling systems could, he says, be cut by a third.

Huge effort has gone into warming up buildings as efficiently as possible; less into cooling them down. Most air-conditioning units, like refrigerators, use tubes containing chemical refrigerants which vaporise as they draw heat out of the air passing over them. This chilled air is then circulated with a fan to cool a building, a train or a car. Regulations are outlawing certain refrigerants, such as chlorofluorocarbons, which contain ozone-depleting chemicals. New developments would make cooling systems greener still because they would use less power. …

Philanthropy: Keeping up with the Gateses

The world’s leading philanthropists ask other tycoons to join their movement

ONE of the unlikeliest books of last year was “Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us!”, a fictional account by Ralph Nader, a veteran left-wing campaigner, of a movement of billionaires led by Warren Buffett and featuring, among others, Ted Turner, George Soros and Barry Diller, who use their fortunes to clean up America. This was not, as you might suppose, a satire but what Mr Nader called “an exercise in practical Utopianism”. He even met Mr Buffett to urge him to take up the challenge.

Perhaps the Sage of Omaha, as Mr Buffett is known, was listening. On June 16th, with Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, he launched a campaign to persuade America’s billionaires to give away much of their fortunes. They are invited to take the “giving pledge” by writing a public letter promising to donate 50% or more of their wealth. Mr Buffett himself has written the first, which is published on a website, givingpledge.org. He says he will ultimately give away 99% of his wealth, most of which he has already pledged to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Although the letters will not be legally binding, they are intended to create a moral obligation which will be reinforced by peer pressure from others who take the pledge—a bit like members of Alcoholics Anonymous who promise to stay off the booze. …

Keeping Your Computer Adware Free Posted By : Ms Mindy Matter

Adware, or advertising software can be more than a general nuisance. Some
forms of advertising software simply play or display themselves on just
about any site you visit, i.e. banners. Other forms of advertising software
are actually privacy invasive. Often times a free download may be bundled
with adware in exchange for the right to use the program for free. This is
known as shareware. The program monitors your browsing habits. It is not
done to damage your computer but will instead give related information on
products you seem interested in. The information obtained is then passed on
to third parties without your knowledge or permission. The companies doing
this argue this is done to offset cost. Tip: Do NOT click on pop-up ads.

The euro-area bail-out could be the biggest yet

SOME of the loans the IMF has made during this crisis have been among the largest in its history. Its extension of a precautionary line of credit to Mexico last year was its biggest commitment in absolute terms. But as a multiple of a country’s “quota” in the fund (the maximum amount that a member state is obliged to put into the IMF’s kitty), the fund’s contribution to Greece’s bail-out is the biggest ever. The IMF is now supposed to fork out half of what the European Union makes available as part of a stabilisation fund for the euro area. If that fund were to be activated in its entirety, the IMF’s contribution would come to €250 billion, or 214 billion SDRs (the IMF’s unit of account). That would exceed the combined size of the ten biggest loans it has ever made, which together involved a commitment of SDR 194.2 billion.

Keeping warm in an EV

There are some interesting observations in our forum area on the problem of heaters in EVs draining battery juice. Trading off cabin warmth for vehicle range might not be a fun choice if you live in a part of the world subject to occasional cold weather (and I guess the converse applies in hot/humid places where you might want the AC switched on more or less constantly).

Human ingenuity being what it is, solutions are being found that don’t necessarily include long johns and woolly hats…
