In their ever-evolving effort to make Jam Cruise 9 the sweetest fest on the high seas, the organizers have added singer-songwriter extraordinaire Nathan Moore, guitar hero Steve Kimock and American Idol‘s Taylor Hicks, who they met as a cruiser on Jam Cruise 2 before his Idol stint.

In addition, JC 9 has announced the Late Night Disco will feature Jeff Bujak, Nutritious, Wyllys and Gypsyphonic Disko.

Jam Cruise 9 sets sail January 4-9, 2011, leaving from Ft. Lauderdale, FL and traveling to Honduras and Mexico. At this stage, 90-percent of cabins are booked, so those planning to attend should put some haste in their pace.

Beginning on 4/20, Steve
Kimock
joins long-time collaborator Bobby Vega for a very auspicious performance at their old stomping grounds in Fairfax,
CA. This one-night event will serve as a launching pad for the Steve Kimock Crazy Engine tour
kicking off the next day at the Hopmonk in Sebastopol, CA. Setting the tone for the tour, the Hopmonk
performance will also include Bobby Vega as a special guest, for what looks like a night of intense dueling bass licks
and the crystal clear guitar phrasing that only Steve Kimock can deliver.

Crazy Engine continues down the track on April 22 for an Earth Day celebration at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, CA. This three-set show boasts a rare Kimock solo opener – the first of its kind in California followed by Steve Kimock
Crazy Engine featuring the legendary Melvin Seals on Hammond B3 and keys (JGB), Kimock’s twenty-year-
old son John Morgan Kimock on drums and Trevor Exter, on bass and vocals. The Crazy Engine
run then heads south to Hermosa Beach and San Diego, with a stop in between in Phoenix, AZ for a late night
performance at the Compound Grill as part of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival – marking Kimock’s
first show in the Southwest for over three years.

Also scheduled for the spring, Kimock will perform a two-show solo performance in NYC at The Stone on May 7. Known for his intrinsic ability to speak through the guitar, this one-night stand is sure to bring out a side of Kimock’s
music (and instruments) rarely seen in the public, and often reserved for late nights in the heart of his home studio. The new non-profit performance space is dedicated to the experimental and the avante garde, a seemingly perfect
environment for the unconventional guitarist and his solo muse.

Then, beginning on May 20, Kimock will embark on a four-day journey with The Everyone Orchestra. The
traveling event will kick off at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins on May 20 and will continue to Quixote’s True Blue
(formerly Owsleys) on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22. This rendition of the project features a stellar lineup of
nationally renowned talent including Kyle Hollingsworth (SCI), Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), Dave Watts (The Motet), Jamie Janover (Zilla), Garrett
Sayers
(The Motet), Jamie Masefield (Jazz Mandolin Project), Matt Butler and of course, YOU. An additional Sunday, May 23
performance (minus Hollingsworth) is billed as a happy hour show featuring an acoustic set and with other special guests to be announced.

With little pause, Kimock will then join forces with the ultra-experimental Marco Benevento for an intimate powerhouse show at the River Street Jazz Cafe in Wilkes-Barre, PA – near Kimock’s home turf, on June 17. Both known for their emotive and often instrumental arrangements, this paring is sure not to disappoint.

How do you fit into the Everyone Orchestra? The fully improvised performance is the brainchild of founder
Matt Butler, who
incorporates the skill set of the assembled all-star lineup with the voices and sounds of
the audience for a unique and fun musical experience.

Literally an orchestra where everyone in the room takes part, the Everyone Orchestra brings together a
form of musical improvisation that is rarely accomplished to this degree. While the band actually only consists of
one key player – conductor Matt Butler – each show features a rotating cast of up to a dozen players on
any given night. Drawing on the wealth of talent local to the area he visits, or those performing at a festival, the
concept lures local and national players who are often performing for the first time together and the audience of
course, is performing right along.

The four-night traveling event will kick off at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins on May 20 and will continue to
Quixote’s True Blue (formerly Owsleys) on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22. The Sunday, May 23 performance is
billed as a happy hour show featuring an acoustic set (minus Hollingsworth), and with other special guests yet to be
announced.

The locally based organization, Conscious Alliance, will also be hosting a food drive, benefiting the Pine Ridge
Reservation in South Dakota. All patrons that donate 10 non-perishable food items will receive a free limited-
edition Everyone Orchestra 2010 Colorado Tour poster created by the very special artist, Ryan Kerrigan.

The Chris Berry Trio returned to the certified organic confines of the Ukiah Brewing Company once again, this time with guitar legend Steve Kimock in tow, and gave the Redwood Empire crowd a lesson in feel-good fun and psychedelic exploration.

The evening began with a solo set from Steven Bates on acoustic guitar, who at first struck me as a woodsy version of James Blunt mixed with the voice of Bob Dylan. As the crowd packed in, Bates utilized a strong catalog of covers to raise the temperature on a damp Monday night. Launching into a strong rendition of The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life,” Bates evoked some Phish-y thoughts and a sing-along from the eclectic and equally colorful crowd. Bates also showed off his mandolin skills with a heartfelt rendition of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” that immediately had this Widespread Panic fan thinking of John Bell and the Marley raps he peppers throughout versions of “Stop-Go.”

Previously when CB3 visited Ukiah last summer, Berry brought with him longtime friend and Panjea member Michael Kang of String Cheese Incident fame, but the revolving door of CB3 guest musicians had turned and with it came Steve Kimock. Throughout the nation, and the West Coast in particular, Kimock has made guest appearances with a plethora of bands and brings with him a legion of loyal followers – for good reason, too. Kimock, Berry and Aaron Johnston and Jesse Murphy, both of Brazilian Girls (though Murphy is no longer an active member), took the stage to show Ukiah just what they had up their sleeves.

Opening with “Come Away,” Berry wasted no time in getting out his unique mbira and filling the Brew Co. with its xylophone-meets-organ sound, and the crowd loved it. From Kimock’s upstroke guitar riffs to the bouncy, rolling tones of the mbira, the inimitable sound of CB3 was locked in and the kettle was starting to boil. I’ve come to expect that the soundscapes Berry and the band create can often be so rich that they’re almost visual, and this show was more of the same.

The previous CB3 show in Ukiah featuring Kang kept with a mostly island-like, calypso groove, but Kimock brought an entirely different flavor. With a row of effects pedals in front of him that looked like he could launch rockets, Kimock did just that. Following the opening verses of “Start Over Again,” Berry said, “Take it, Stevie,” and the ensuing solo dipped into an inspired jam that resonated through the room leaving mouths agape. Creating an almost Egyptian feel, Kimock took the jam into the depths of world beat downtempo before igniting the crowd with his fluid style of searing electronica and spacey interplay. Johnston and Murphy kept the first set flowing with a quick drum and bass solo as Kimock’s nimble fingers danced up and down the fretboard over the top. From there, the band uncorked a track that sounded like something from The Disco Biscuits‘ catalog thanks to the flavorful combination of guitar and pedal magic.

If CB3′s first set was all about structure and composed rhythm, then the second set was an experimental free-for-all with Kimock let loose on almost every track, stirring the crowd like a bowl of psychedelic soup. While Berry made up lyrics on the fly about the sky splitting Redwood trees of Mendocino County, the crowd stayed engaged as they fist pumped in unison. As the set drew to a close, Berry was in typical madman form onstage, multitasking between the bongos and mbira while keeping up with the vocals the whole time. With one track left, Kimock and Berry squeezed out the last of the crowd’s energy with a huge jam that touched on elements of jungle, calypso and some old fashioned rock & roll. As the jam reached its final crescendo with Kimock’s guitar placed in his lap, a good friend turned to me and gave a colorful conclusion about the show: “Steve Kimock is the Doctor Digital of the lap licks on guitar.” I think that about sums it up.

On its 4th year, Camp Barefoot Music & Art Festival is set to take place August 19-21, 2010 at Camp Hidden Meadows in Bartow, WV. Heybro Productions, LLC, the producer of the event, has further expanded its national acts, while keeping the intimate small festival vibe they are known for. Focused as a grassroots festival they still support the regional and local music scene from up and down the eastern seaboard.

Camp Barefoot 4 will benefit the Humane Society of Pocahontas County, the local animal shelter in desperate need of donations to build a new shelter and provide for homeless pets. With no national acts overlapping each other, the three-day weekend event will supply numerous bands on multiple stages for extensive crowd pleasing entertainment.

Tickets are limited to a max capacity of 3,000 people. At present, early-bird ticket pricing is $80 each for a weekend pass. These tickets are in limited quantity and price is subject to change without notice up to $105. There are only 50 VIP passes available. They will also feature a wide variety of food, art and craft vendors at this grassroots, family style music and art event. Additionally, the new camp home features a 1000 foot zip-line, outdoor rock climbing wall and amusement park style waterslide. The event itself will feature a KidZone and promoters are taking steps to go green by eliciting recycling programs trying to reduce waste.

Justin Vernon :: 01.21 :: NY Guitar Fest

A day trip out to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria would provide the ideal prerequisite for the New York Guitar Festival’s Silent Films/Live Guitars series. The delightful multimedia museum hosts a particularly relevant hands-on exhibit, whereby visitors pony up to computer editing stations where they are given the opportunity to experiment with well known movie scenes by selecting between various musical selections to set the feeling for the scene.

The lesson comes across, clear as day, that while the scene remains the same, by applying soundtracks from vastly different musical genres, the tone and overall feel of the scene changes dramatically. Interestingly, what each amateur music supervisor quickly discovers is that there really exists no right or wrong in selecting the music for movies. To an extent, it can be said that a chase scene, for example, requires a composition with some degree of tension and up-tempo driving beat, but this can be as effectively conveyed via bluegrass or percussion and sparse keyboards as with gritty, hard-charging rock.

To that end, the New York Guitar Festival presents brilliant programming whereby they invite prominent guitarists to compose entirely original, custom scores to accompany timeless silent films. In essence, this makes for an interesting study in how different musicians – and different minds in general – interpret the feelings that a film evokes.

This particular week of the month-long series at Merkin Concert Hall played host to two virtual polar opposites in Steve Kimock (accompanied by his son John Morgan Kimock on drums) and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver (accompanied by Chris Rosenau, his longtime mentor and bandmate from Volcano Choir). As expected, both duets took wildly different approaches to their scores, but interestingly, both refrained almost entirely from playing the cartoonish, reactionary, sound effect-laden type of playing – a la Batman – that we might expect given the slapstick nature of the subject matter, with Kimock accompanying Buster Keaton‘s Cops and Vernon holding court for Charlie Chaplin‘s One A.M. and Easy Street.

To begin the performance, John Schaefer from WNYC’s Soundcheck introduced Steve and John Morgan Kimock, followed by a brief Q&A session with Steve, whereby he elaborated on his approach to the piece. As expected, Kimock professed that he and John Morgan planned to take a more improvisational approach to the subject matter, having pre-composed some general themes and segments but coming at it largely without a net.

The most convincing parts of the Kimock segment came via the bookend music that began and ended the film, where John Morgan played a simple melodica melody alongside a Wes Montgomery-esque jazz piece by Steve that resulted in a mood-setting French jazz theme. For the rest of the roughly 20 minute film, Steve stuck with a chord-based jazz guitar feel, altering his tempos and offering the occasional departure based on plot events, but for the most part John Morgan took care of the action, offering comical crashes, thuds, and thumps to reflect Buster Keaton’s mishaps.

By contrast, Justin Vernon and Chris Rosenau explained that they composed and wrote out their piece, collaborating for over a year on their particular scores. Musically, they took a wholly different route, opening up the first of their two films with Rosenau employing an EBow – a guitarist plaything that utilizes vibrations to emulate the bow of a stringed instrument – to create a snake-charming Middle Eastern theme to set the tone. From there, they kept their heads down and created sonic lasagna, layering heaps of effects, harmonics, looping violin plucks, and sweeping ambient chord progressions. Beautiful.

Rosenau & Vernon :: 01.21 :: NY Guitar Fest

The Vernon and Rosenau performance came across particularly astonishing given the nature of the narrative found in Charlie Chaplin films. One A.M., for example, highlights as Vernon joked, “Something we are both intimately familiar with,” namely struggling to make it to bed after an evening of inebriation. The plotline essentially consists of Chaplin falling down the stairs repeatedly and bumbling endlessly with a Murphy bed. Clearly, the natural temptation would be to cater to these mishaps by including playful trills and comical wah-wahs to acknowledge Chaplin’s repeated failures at achieving the most basic of tasks. Instead, the pair composed a beautiful song that could easily find a home on a Built to Spill or Pavement album. One chase scene did cater entirely to the action, delivering a wonderfully tense and action-packed segment that proclaimed, “You better run, man!”

Despite his reclusive nature since his rapid ascent to indie royalty, Justin Vernon came across as the nicest of guys, offering sincere thanks to everyone who came out to see this unique event. The pair clearly took a lot of enjoyment from working on such a fresh project, noting “how crazy we must have looked when anyone walked in to see us sitting right up in front of the TV with all of our guitar gear watching silent movies.”

Hopefully for Bon Iver fans, material of this ilk makes its way into the catalog – or perhaps that Bon Iver fans seek out some Volcano Choir – as folks who know Vernon more for his strum-oriented folk guitar playing will be amazed by his technical proficiency, specifically his skill with a pedal board.

The joy of the New York Guitar Festival came only in part from seeing two of today’s preeminent musicians in an intimate setting, but more so from taking the opportunity to think about the ways people convey different emotions with music, and ultimately thinking about how you yourself would approach it. This New York Guitar Festival program marks one of the truly fresh ideas in live music today, and frankly, it’s addictive. The post-show conversations with friends that come from seeing music in this context earn the price of admission alone. Visitors one week will no doubt want to return the following week, and the following week, and the week after that.

What happens when you put African grooves born in the ghettos of Zimbabwe with the ground breaking guitar work of San Francisco’s scene and combine it with New York City’s urban electronica? The West Coast is about to find out.

Joining together for their first multi-night tour, and performing under the guise of Chris Berry Trio (CB-3), Chris Berry has arranged his most interesting collaboration yet. Featuring Steve Kimock alongside the rhythm section of Aaron Johnston and Jesse Murphy (Brazilian Girls) comes an explosive cross-cultural musical experience for music lovers of all types. The 10-day tour will maneuver along the West Coast including dates in Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Eugene and Portland, OR.

Music first touched the Grammy award winning Chris Berry as a teen living in the heart of Zimbabwe where he carefully learned the indigenous rhythms of Africa on the sacred Mbira (African Thumb Piano). His ability to speak out against the tyranny of the Zimbabwean regime through the art of music won him overnight success across the country and in the World Music market, bringing his music around the globe.

Since then, Berry has performed on the stages of the 2000 Olympics, the Sydney Opera house and the nation’s largest festivals across the United States with his project Panjea. 2010 finds the “Afropop Superstar” (SF Chronicle) a multi-instrumentalist with grace on Mbira, the hand drum, as well as a gifted singer-songwriter whose voice is often compared to Sting.

Collectively, CB-3 has the ability to bring together three decades of music history tightly fitted into one anthology adorned with cutting-edge improvisational guitar, hip-hop and elements of modern electronica. Steve Kimock has been blazing a trail with his guitar for over three decades. Playing in a number of bands and influenced largely by the old school Bay Area music scene, he has often been overshadowed by bigger names but his talent and dedicated fan-base is impossible to ignore. His latest project, Crazy Engine, has been touring across the country and landed at The Fillmore for a special “Fan Request” show. This concert was hyped for months in advance, with a web page set up for fans to request the songs that would be played. Kimock had done this before in S.F. in May of 2005. To the fans, it was a way to be even more involved, and it really turned into a greatest hits show.

Big Light opened the evening and played a well delivered, ear-catching set. As a massively creative band from San Francisco, they have been touring California from L.A. to Santa Cruz and this show was a homecoming of sorts. Their music lives on the borders of indie, jam and pop and their live show is one that needs to be seen to fully appreciate. Lead singer and guitarist Fred Torphy has a raspy, passive voice that supplemented the ambient, woven jams the band produced. His aggressive, yet sporadic guitar work owned the stage and often drove the band when lead guitarist Jeremy Korpas wasn’t tackling notes with nimble dexterity. Playing for a short 45-minutes, the vocals of bassist Steve Adams contrasted with Torphy and created a balanced yin and yang harmony. As a band they performed as one unit, with lo-fi songs propelled by Bradly Bifulco‘s raw drumming. They are one of the few bands to rise up out of the packed San Francisco scene in recent years, and are in the process of recording their full-length debut. They are scheduled to open for The Mother Hips, a perfect combo, in January/February 2010.

Steve Kimock and Crazy Engine wasted no time coming to the stage, with a set up as low key as Kimock himself. The Fillmore being a home venue of sorts for Kimock, the atmosphere was very laid back and intimate. With a smile, adjusting his mic, Kimock mentioned that they wouldn’t be playing any new songs tonight since it was all-request, and the crowd erupted into applause. It was a packed stage with percussionist Sikiru Adepoju playing the talking drum, Hadi Al-Sadoon on trumpet, Kimock on guitar, Bobby Vega on bass, John Morgan Kimock on drums, Melvin Seals on organ and keys, and bassist Trevor Exter playing the cello. There was a lot of talent onstage, not to mention the amazing Norton Wisdom creating live art as the band played. Wisdom worked on some form of Plexiglas so he could paint as the band played and then erase, mold and migrate pictures as the music flowed. It was a direct visual personification of the music itself.

The band opened with “Kissin’ The Boo Boo,” performed with a calypso influence as Kimock used a minimalist approach. The song jammed on for a good 15 minutes, with excellent interplay between Al-Sadoon and Vega as Melvin Seals laid back and let the jam build into a full stage explosion.

The show continued on in this fashion, with percussionist Adepoju leaving the stage for parts of the first set and Al-Sadoon really showcasing his talent on the trumpet, especially during The Meters‘ “Cissy Strut,” with its heavy funk overtones. Seals built a beautifully layered foundation for Kimock to noodle around on. And noodle he did. In fact the entire first set, though heavy on group jamming, featured Kimock showing off his ability to pluck intricate, beautifully played leads. “Why Can’t We All Samba” was a nice treat and well received by the crowd, with Kimock opting to play his Strat instead of his steel guitar as he dispersed layers of intricate guitar work on top of the multi-tiered rhythm section being pounded out by John Morgan and Vega. “Long Form Part 4″ was a funk-jazz number with Seals taking the spotlight, creating eye-squeezing, ear-pleasing melodies out of his organ. The first set was rounded off with foot stompin’ “Hillbillies on PCP,” with Vega slapping out a super intense, chest-rumbling bass riff. John Morgan got to showcase his quick hands on the kit as the entire band sat down for a well-received drum solo that went back and forth between both John and Adepoju.

Compared to the first set, the second was filled with space. Starting with “It’s Up To You,” Kimock took control and jammed heavy, getting the crowd moving and excited for things to come. Segueing into “Life of the Party,” Crazy Engine went into an ambient, almost Arabian version with Exter picking up his bow and strumming out slow, long, vibrant notes, laying down a graceful, trance inducing sound. Meanwhile, from the side of the stage, two beautifully dressed and fully made up belly dancers slowly floated in front of the musicians, moving as if in slow motion and completely in rhythm with the music; it was as if time was standing still. The entire scene was a sight to behold with this amazing artist painting beautiful pieces of abstract, surrealist art, seven super talented musicians playing this slow, ambient piece of jammed out Arabian music, and two radiant belly dancers, not taking over the stage but rather just gracing it briefly with their presence. It could not have been choreographed any better.

“Mother’s Song” was the most beautiful offering of the night, and that says a lot since this show turned out to be pitch perfect. “Mother’s” was slow and Kimock played with an emotion and attention that could be seen across his face. He was in his groove now, heavy on the reverb and echo effects, and the sound bounced around The Fillmore. He built the jam slowly until climaxing with a face-melting crescendo, and then slowing things down, it would cycle round again, creating a very engaging yet spacey vibe. At this point people were moving slowly, swaying back and forth, lost in the jam that lasted for a good 15 to 20 minutes. As the night passed 1 a.m., they performed crowd favorite “Ice Cream” and Kimock really played his part well. He comes across so introverted but onstage he is all business, flashing smiles and showing obvious gratitude to his old musical friends Vega, Al-Sadoon and Adepoju.

The show ended with “Stella Blue,” with Kimock playing his lap guitar. Kimock can put you under his spell with his methodical delivery and his use of negative space, and “Stella” was a high point of the night, with Crazy Engine’s delicate treatment of the song proving soothing and hypnotic.

Just as Crazy Engine treated the fans with respect and admiration by asking for suggestions on what to play, the same beamed from the crowd. Successful without a doubt, fun-filled and engaging, the “Fan Request Show” was truly an early Christmas gift.

Kimock Late Night NYC Post-Phish

Beginning the first week in December, New York City will not be the same as you know it. North Star has been a corner institution since Prohibition, serving up drinks for almost 90 years, and musical acts since the late 1980s. On this evening, a very special acoustic night of music is hosted, including the up and coming Exter vs. Kimock.

Combining smoky New York club style songwriting with a wide range of modern and classic beats, the young duo presents an interesting addition to the music landscape. Fresh off a fall leg of Crazy Engine shows, drummer John Kimock and cello player/vocalist Trevor Exter have been well seasoned by spring, summer and fall tour dates around the Nation and parts of Europe.

At about 8:35 p.m., the duo claimed their respective spots and instruments onstage. The first track chosen is “Drink Deep,” featuring special guest Daniel DeJesus on a second cello. The song is preceded by a musical interaction between the two cellists, reminiscent of an Indian flute song, a beautiful template for the introduction of a bluesy funk number.

This leads us to a very serious jam in the middle of the tune, both cellos magnificently complementing and inspiring the other, all the while further deepening the groove. And in beautiful form, the song breaks and Exter finishes the chorus a cappella, a trademark of “Drink Deep.” Soon “Mexico” takes hold of the audience, a bouncy number that struggles with inner turmoil and the pains of leaving one’s home. Kimock’s playing is very exact and quiet on this number, beautiful accompaniment to a cautionary tale.

The set progresses with a hard-hitting, almost punk song and a dynamic jam showcasing remarkable control by both musicians. Exter performed “Passion” solo, patiently painting memories of lost lovers. After yanking on further heart strings with “Back In My Arms,” the duo drop into Bon Iver‘s “Lump Sum.” A bold choice, the cover is pulled off beautifully with haunting melodies and delicate execution. As the lyrics pass softly, and the song ends rightfully, a quick nod and smile and the duo launch into “Night Train,” where Exter sings, “In this life you have guns, and you have church.” Amen, brother.

Steve Kimock is a busy guy. In between a seemingly endless touring schedule, Kimock has somehow managed to design an electric guitar with legendary guitar-smith Scott Walker, compose a score to a 1920′s silent film, plan for a three-show stint with world music guru Chris Berry and still muster enough strength to cross the country with the Crazy Engine.

Starting in 2007, Scott Walker and Steve Kimock began discussing the ergonomics of a perfect guitar. How it sits in the lap, how it hangs on the shoulder, how the strings present themselves, etc. The guitar player and craftsman came up with a design that offers both a unique look and sound. As the New York Guitar Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this January, a series of special shows at Manhattan’s Merkin Concert Hall on Thursday nights will showcase an artist or ensemble scoring an early classic film. On January 21, the festival will present Kimock playing to Buster Keaton’s classic silent film Cops. That same night, Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon will provide the sonic backdrop to Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush.

As an artist known to bring together many genres, Kimock will play a string of dates in September with the Chris Berry Trio. The Trio will also feature Michael Kang (The String Cheese Incident) and drum and bass from the Brazilian Girls.
