Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley: New Album Drops 5/18

NAS & DAMIAN “JR. GONG” MARLEY: NEW STUDIO ALBUM “DISTANT RELATIVES” SET TO DROP MAY 18

Nas

Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley are proud
to announce the release of their highly-anticipated collaborative studio album, Distant Relatives
(Universal Republic)
on Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Featuring the signature instrumentation and musicianship of Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley with the hard-hitting beats and lyrics of Nas, the album title refers not only to the bond between the artists, but the
connection to their African ancestry, which inspired the album both musically and lyrically.

Throughout the course of their musical careers, the duo has always admired each other’s style. Since first meeting
in 1996 the two artists have shared a mutual respect and camaraderie that was most recently showcased on the
track “Road to Zion,” from Damian’s critically acclaimed album, Welcome to Jamrock. After having such a positive
experience working together, they have now joined forces again for Distant Relatives. In their latest collaboration,
Nas and Damian trace hip-hop’s roots to Africa, where the genre originated as a vital form of cultural expression
and was then transported by the slave trade to the Caribbean and the American colonies. It blossomed a half
century ago in the dance halls of Kingston, Jamaica, and soon migrated to the park jams and recreational centers of
New York City, where the culture became known as hip-hop. This evolution forms the basis of the Distant Relatives
project which, in addition to the album, also includes a documentary film, performances and a series of public
discussions, the first of which took place in conjunction with National Geographic Live in Washington, DC last
December.

“Damian and Nas have made a groundbreaking album that combines the depth and vision of these two artists with a
seminal musical and cultural thread of multiple generations,” stated Monte Lipman, President and CEO of Universal
Republic Records. “We’re thrilled to play a role on what’s certain to be another pivotal album for both artists and one
of the more unique collaborative efforts in recent years.”

Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley plan to hit the road following the release of their album, including stops at
Bonnaroo and the Heineken Opener Festival in Poland.

Wealthy elderly turn backs on seaside havens

Newly retired move to cultural cities or the shires

God’s waiting rooms are undergoing a transformation. For decades, many of Britain’s coastal towns have been synonymous with blue rinses, bingo and tea dances. Places such as Bournemouth, Eastbourne and Worthing have been seen as retirement havens for generations of pensioners, keen to take the sea air just as their Victorian predecessors used to.

But according to an analysis of demographic data, many of today’s wealthier pensioners are turning their backs on traditional retirement destinations with a “grey influx” into upmarket towns and cities in some of the UK’s most sought-after inland locations – such as in the Cotswolds, and parts of Hampshire and Kent.

The shift is driven by an increase in the number of people reaching retirement age, coupled with rising levels of wealth. In 1945, life expectancy at birth for men and women was 63 and 68 respectively. In 2009 it is 78 and 82.

The dramatic increase in the number of over-65s means that by 2019 there will be 2.4 million more than today. But the traditional coastal retirement resorts, which grew to meet burgeoning demand from the postwar middle classes, have not been able to accommodate the demographic shift.

Research from Experian, the consumer research and credit rating agency, charts the trend. Changes to its giant Mosaic database – which divides the UK population into socioeconomic and lifestyle groups – show a much larger proportion of older people moving to the most desirable parts of the country, often funding this by selling their mortgage-free homes. And where coastal destinations were once the vogue, many are now looking to inland market towns, historic cities and major cultural destinations.

“People want to spend more of their retirement in the country, in areas of attractive scenery,” said Richard Webber, visiting professor of geography at University College London, who helped develop Mosaic. “And they are choosing to live a long way from London and other major population centres.”

Webber said around half of those reaching retirement age choose to carry on living in their own home, or at least in the same area. But of those with above-average wealth, around 60 per cent choose to live somewhere else. Half of these now select less traditional retirement destinations.

“A lot more older people want to retire to places of historic importance, places that have orchestras and festivals,” said Webber. “They’re looking at historic market towns and cities, places like Bath and Cheltenham, cathedral cities and university towns where there are beautiful buildings.”

The new pensioners

As a result of its extensive social mapping of the UK, Experian has identified five new types of retiree.

Beachcombers

This group reflects the growing trend for the middle-class retired to select smaller communities, many on the coast or a river, rather than larger resorts. Popular destinations: Barnstaple, Newport (Isle of Wight), Carmarthen, Inverness, Kendal, Newton Abbot.

Balcony downsizers

Higher-status retired people in their 70s and 80s, who live in privately owned or leasehold apartments in purpose-built blocks of flats suitable for those too fragile to cope with the upkeep of houses and gardens. Popular destinations: Worthing, Boscombe, Edinburgh, Southend-on-Sea, Barnet, Kingston upon Thames.

Golden retirement

People with accumulated assets, who pick prestigious retirement communities. They lead busy social lives, drive and garden. Popular destinations: Exeter, Southampton, Poole, Chichester, Norwich, Canterbury and Ipswich.

Bungalow quietude

Retirees with modest pensions, living in older-style bungalows, often in less well-off areas unattractive to younger families. Popular destinations: Blackpool, Rhyl, Scarborough, Plymouth, Nottingham, Peterborough, Newcastle upon Tyne, Lincoln, Leicester.

Country-loving elders

People on comfortable incomes living in former farms or older-style properties in quiet villages and market towns. Popular destinations: Truro, King’s Lynn, Hereford, Carlisle, Shrewsbury.

Jamaican athletes fail drug tests

Athletics generic image

Five Jamaican athletes have tested positive for a banned substance, the sport’s governing body has confirmed.

The athletes – four men and one woman – are not thought to include any of Jamaica’s 2008 Olympic medallists.

IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said: "It’s very early in the process so we cannot name them or the substance."

An unnamed Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (Jadco) official had earlier told news agency Reuters: "None of the world stars are involved."

Dr Herb Elliott of Jadco told Radio Jamaica that all ofive of the athletes had been selected for Jamaica’s 46-strong team for next month’s World Championships in Berlin.

Davies added: "We have just received the paperwork from Jamaica, it is five – four guys and one girl. These are in-competition tests.

"We now inform the (Jamaican) federation who will then inform the athletes, and then they are asked if they want the B sample tested."

Jadco’s executive director Dr Patrece Charles-Freeman has been quoted in the Jamaican media as saying an investigation is now under way.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Bruce Golding has called top officials from Jadco and the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association to an emergency meeting in Kingston so he can be briefed on the situation.

The Caribbean nation dominated last summer’s Olympic sprint races and is hoping for similar success in Germany.

Former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell commented on the news after racing in a heat at the Aviva London Grand Prix on Friday, saying: "It’s disappointing, but I have to do what I have to do. I just have to stay that way and stay clean."

Aleen Bailey, competing in the women’s 200m event in London, was visibly shocked by the news.

"You never want anybody from your country or your team to be tested positive," she told BBC Sport. </p

A new single featuring Jamaican legends Lukani, Earl Smith and Leroy Wallace

Toubab Krewe

Fresh from widely praised performances at Rothbury (read our review here), where members of the band joined The Dead on percussion during their headlining July 4th set, Toubab Krewe launches into the second leg of their summer tour with the release of a new single, “Fire.” The collaborative new song was recorded recently at reggae guitar legend Earl Smith‘s front porch home-studio in Kingston, Jamaica and features Lukani (vocals), Smith (guitar) and Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace (drums).

Toubab Krewe kicks off the tour aboard the first annual Toubab Kruise in New York City on July 15. The band will bring its dance-party inducing fusion of rock ‘n’ roll and West African music to the boat as it sails along the East River, heading through the New York Harbor to the Statue of Liberty.

Special guest Earl Smith will join Toubab Krewe on guitar at all of the upcoming shows through August 1. Perhaps the most sought after guitarist in reggae, Smith has performed and recorded with everyone from Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh and Burning Spear to more recent pop icons like Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu and Joss Stone.

Toubab Krewe plans to spend much of August in the studio recording a new full length album (details TBA).

An extensive fall tour is also in the works, with confirmed dates including the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco (October 8) and the Joshua Tree Music Festival (October 10).

A short video taken of the band’s time in Jamaica during the recording can be seen here:
