Serbia’s likely next steps after ICJ ruling

After the ICJ announces its advisory opinion regarding the legality of the Kosovo Albanian UDI next week, Serbia will begin its final diplomatic lobbying. This is according to a report in today’s Blic newspaper, which offers a detailed list of the steps to follow by Belgrade, after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) announces its ruling on Thursday, July 22, at 15:00 CET.

ICJ to announce Kosovo ruling on July 22

The International Court of Justice will announce its advisory opinion on the legality of the Kosovo Albanian unilateral independence proclamation on July 22.
The public session has been scheduled for next Thursday at 15:00 CET at the Peace Palace in The Hague, when ICJ President Hisashi Owada will read the ruling.

EULEX: No date for return of judges

EULEX issued a statement in PriÅ¡tina today saying that there has been no date set for the return of judges to a court in northern Kosovska Mitrovica. The statement came from the EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, chief Yves de Kermabon, saying it regarded “the return of Kosovo Albanian and Kosovo Serb judges and prosecutors to the (Kosovska) Mitrovica District Court”.

Sjediu rejects new talks; Rexhepi speaks again

Kosovo Albanian President Fatmir Sejdiu has repeated that Kosovo authorities and Belgrade can talk about anything but the status of Kosovo. “With Serbia we can speak about any topic that is in the interest of the two neighboring countries, but never about the issue of Kosovo’s independence,” Sejdiu was quoted as saying today as he addressed the assembly in Priština, boycotted by some opposition parties.

K. Ministry official on situation in north

Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanović says the situation in northern Kosovska Mitrovica is now stable.
However he added that the people were “distraught” after Kosovo Albanian government Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi made his “threats”, which Ivanović believes should neither be dismissed nor overemphasized.

EU 5 unimpressed by EP resolution

The European Parliament (EP) resolution calling on all EU member-states to recognize Kosovo, does not seem to be likely to influence the countries in question. Cyprus, Slovakia, Greece, Romania and Spain have not recognized the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declared of independence of Serbia’s southern province.

“K. Albanian minister sent open threat of war”

President Boris Tadić said that Kosovo Albanian Minister Bajram Rexhepi made open threats of war in a statement made on Friday. Rexhepi, who is the interior minister in the Kosovo Albanian government, said that Priština would be sending special police forces to northern Kosovo in order to establish peace and order in the region.

K. Albanians “to send police to north”

A Kosovo Albanian government minister said in PriÅ¡tina that “special forces” of the Kosovo police would be sent to the Serb north.
Bajram Rexhepi, who is the PriÅ¡tina government’s interior minister, said such a move would come in order to secure “peace and order”.

“Not much room for ambiguity for ICJ”

International law professor Tibor Varadi says the ICJ has not been given have much room to produce an ambiguous ruling in the Kosovo case. The top UN court is expected to give its advisory opinion on the legality under international law of the Kosovo Albanian unilateral independence declaration made in February 2008.

Wounded Kosovo assembly member speaks

Petar Miletić says that it is hard for him to believe that he was shot because he belongs to a “different political option”.
Miletić is an official of a party called the Independent Liberals, which cooperates with the Kosovo Albanian government and is not embraced by the majority Serb population in Kosovo.

UN Security Council on tensions in Kosovo

The UN Security Council held an emergency session called by Serbia in New York on Tuesday. The meeting came in order to review the situation in Kosovo after a bomb attack which left one person dead during a Serb protest rally in Kosovo Mitrovica last week. The Serbs were protesting against the opening of a Kosovo Albanian government office there. The Serbs do not recognize the authority of that government.

Tadić hints at “reassessing relations”

Serbian President Boris Tadić today addressed the extraordinary session of the UN Security Council in New York, called after the latest incidents in Kosovo.
Tadić told the council that Serbia “will have no choice but to reassess its relations with the international presence in Kosovo and Metohija unless the international factors deny further support to PriÅ¡tina’s (Kosovo Albanian) destabilizing acts”.

“Fight against corruption crucial for Kosovo”

President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy is visiting Priština today for meeting with Kosovo Albanian officials.
Ahead of his trip, he told Albanian language daily Zeri that the fight against corruption and organized crime is the main precondition Kosovo needs to meet if it wants to achieve progress in any important area, including the accession to European institutions.

K. Albanians “won’t give up on integration of north”

Kosovo Albanian Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi says the government in PriÅ¡tina was “determined to continue the implementation of their plan for the north”. He stated that this was the case despite the rise of tensions in the predominantly Serb-areas.

Priština media on upcoming UN SC session

Kosovo Albanian officials will “request that Belgrade stops interfering in Kosovo’s internal issues” at Tuesday’s UN Security Council meeting. This is according to reports out of PriÅ¡tina, that said those officials will also “insist on the stance that northern (Serb) Kosovo must have order and lawfulness like in the rest of the country”.

Kosovo Albanian official accuses Serbs

Kosovo Albanian Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi said that he believes that Friday’s fatal explosion in Kosovska Mitrovica can be attributed to Serb extremists. The Kosovo police, KPS, have stated that they have information on several suspects in the blast, but that they would not be releasing any information on them to the public yet.

Thousands honor K. Mitrovica blast victim

Thousands northern Kosovska Mitrovica residents escorted the body of Mesud Džeković, killed in a blast on Friday, from the local hospital to his home. Džeković, a local pediatrician, died in the Kosovska Mitrovica Medical Center from injuries sustained this morning when a hand grenade was thrown at a demonstration staged by local Serbs, who protested an attempt of the Kosovo Albanian government in Priština to open an office in the ethnically divided town.

K. Albanian govt. minister attacked

Kosovo Albanian government Minister of Education, Science and Technology Minister Enver Hoxhaj has been attacked in Priština. Reports said that he did not suffer any injuries.

“Exchange of territory is dangerous”

A Kosovo Albanian government in PriÅ¡tina officials says that a possible “exchange of territory between Kosovo and Serbia” would open up the issue of borders.
It would also pose a danger to the stability of the region, said Deputy PM Hajredin Kuqi.

Kosovo, Albanian PMs on ICJ opinion

The Kosovo Albanian, and Albanian PMs stated that they believe that the ICJ decision will work to the advantage of Kosovo. They also said it would result in new recognitions.
