Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir VukÄević says it “might be best” if the Kosovo organ trafficking probe were to be handled by “independent investigators”.
VukÄević spoke about a future investigation into organ trafficking allegations mentioned in Dick Marty’s report, adding that EULEX needs to be more effective in working on the case.

The allegations presented the Marty report should be looked into by an international commission, concluded the Swiss National Council Foreign Affairs Committee. The report on human organ trafficking in Kosovo and norther Albania was submitted by by Swiss politician and Council of Europe (CoE) Special Rapporteur Dick Marty.
Kosovo minister calls for speedy start to investigation
Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanović says an investigation into the Kosovo organ trafficking allegations should start as soon as possible. He also called for the forming of an independent commission in connection to the case.

A Belgrade newspaper writes today that negotiations on Kosovo between Belgrade and PriÅ¡tina could start in March. It also expresses the expectation that progress will soon be made towards opening the Belgrade-Priština dialogue which has not yet begun due to the toppling of the Kosovo government.

Former Dutch State Secretary for European Affairs Frans Timmermans warned the U.S. in late 2007 that Kosovo was “run by people who live off crime”.
This has emerged in a leaked U.S. diplomatic cable obtained by the Wikileaks whistleblowing website.
Final results of Kosovo elections
The Kosovo Central Election Commission announced on Sunday evening the final results of the early elections held in Kosovo.
According to this, 34 madates were won by Hashim Thaci’s Democratic Party of Kosovo, followed by the Democratic League of Kosovo with 27.
“Organ trafficking will be investigated”
Head of Serbia’s delegation PACE Dragoljub Mićunović says the decision on who will conduct the investigation on Kosovo organ trafficking has not yet been taken. He, however, expressed his conviction that the case will be resolved.

OSCE should support an international investigation into human organ trade in Kosovo, Russian Permanent Representative to the OSCE Anvar Azimov said Friday.
“The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted on January 25 a resolution urging international agencies, including EULEX, to conduct the investigation with the assistance of member countries of the Council of Europe and disregard the official positions possible suspects might have,†he said.
EULEX starts preliminary investigation
EULEX prosecutors have begun a preliminary investigation into the allegations made in CoE Rapporteur Dick Marty’s report on organ trafficking in Kosovo.
EULEX has the capacity, competence, location and authority to conduct the inquiry and is willing to do so, says the release.
Justice minister on witness protection
Justice Minister Snežana Malović says an impartial and thorough Kosovo organ trafficking probe cannot be take place without offering full security to witnesses. “Witnesses have to be fully protected, all cases involving murder and threatening of witnesses have to be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible have to be sanctioned,†Malović said in an interview with the Banja Luka daily Glas Srpske.

The Financial Times writes today that the EU and U.S. are expected to allow the investigation into organ trade in Kosovo after the Marty report was adopted.
Ever since they recognized Kosovo’s independence in 2008, the U.S. and its European Union allies have been under no illusions about the malign influence of high-level corruption and organized crime “in the former Serbian province”, according to an opinion piece published in the London daily.
Serbian FM urges African Union support
Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić thanked on Thursday African countries for their support to Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also urged them to support an investigation into the allegations presented in the report on human organ trafficking in Kosovo.
PM “expects detailed investigation”
PM Mirko Cvetković says he expects a detailed investigation to follow the adoption of the PACE resolution on the allegations of organ trafficking in Kosovo. Cvetković told Tanjug that the resolution supports the Serbian government view that war crimes were committed by all sides during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, but added that Belgrade did not wish to turn the issue into a political matter.
Marty: EULEX powerless, ad hoc structure needed
CoE Rapporteur Dick Marty said that the EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, in its current incarnation, is powerless to investigate organ trafficking. The Swiss senator advised for an ad hoc judicial structure to be set up, which would be located outside of Kosovo, should be created specially for the purpose.
“Del Ponte office destroyed evidence”
An adviser to the current chief Hague Tribunal prosecutor says it was Carla Del Ponte’s office that destroyed evidence in the Kosovo organ trade case. “It would likely be easier had we kept the material. That was an unfortunate decision,” Frederick Swinnen told Belgrade’s Blic daily.
Families of missing Kosovo Serbs react
An association of families of kidnapped and missing Kosovo Serbs has called on prosecutions and courts to react in the wake of the CoE resolution. “We expect all crimes to be investigated and criminals to meet their deserved punishment,” a statement from the association said.
“Serbia has no ‘EU or Kosovo’ dilemma”
Serbia’s FM Vuk Jeremić told an Austrian magazine that it was “hard to imagine” Serbs would be forced to choose between EU membership and Kosovo. He told Vienna’s profil magazine that EU membership was Serbia’s most important goal, and that some EU states did not accept Kosovo as independent.
