MediaRing becomes Modi’s springboard in mobile internet access

MediaRing, a Singapore-based provider of Internet telephone services, will act as Indian billionaire Bhupendra Kumar Modi’s springboard to expand into mobile online access.
 
MediaRing will adopt the Spicei2i brand to sell wireless Internet services in Singapore and the Middle East initially, Modi said at a press meeting in the city-state today. MediaRing will also sell Spice-branded mobile phones over the counter starting this week, according to Chief Executive Officer Ashok Goyal. MediaRing surged 17% in Singapore trading today.

Billionaire Modi seeks island resorts in distressed-asset quest

Billionaire Bhupendra Kumar Modi, who made his fortune from mobile-phone services in India, is planning to invest US$100 million ($142.5 million) in distressed assets including the island resorts on Batam and Bintan neighboring Singapore.

Modi, chairman of Singapore-based Spice Global with interests from telecommunications to financial services, said he is in talks to buy stakes in all the resorts on the Indonesian islands and wants to transform them into entertainment hubs, flying in Bollywood stars and eventually adding casinos.

Indian billionaire Modi to spend US$200m to buy companies

Indian billionaire Bhupendra Kumar Modi, who has interests from retailing to entertainment, has set aside US$200 million ($268 million) to buy more companies ahead of a planned initial public offering.

“We are doing acquisitions in finance, information technology, entertainment and also in telecommunications,” Modi, 60, said in a telephone interview today. “We acquired a retail chain and we are acquiring more.”
