Kosovska Mitrovica doctor laid to rest

Several thousand citizens attended the funeral on Saturday of local doctor Mesud DÅ¾ekoviÄ‡, who was killed in an explosion on Friday during Serb protests. Along with family, friends and neighbors, Serbian Minister for Kosovo Goran BogdanoviÄ‡, Serbian parliamentary MPs and local government officials also attended the funeral service.

Patriarch Pavle to be laid to rest

The spiritual leader of the Serb Orthodox Christians, His Holiness Patriarch Pavle, will be buried today in Rakovica, near Belgrade. Holy Liturgy was served this morning by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I at the Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Belgrade, where the body of the patriarch has been lying in state since Sunday.

The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), His Holiness Patriarch Pavle, has died in Belgrade at the age of 95, it has been announced. The patriarch passed away at 10:45 CET on Sunday, at Belgrade’s military clinic VMA, where he had been receiving medical treatment since November 2007. The clinic announced that he died in his sleep.

US President Barack Obama congratulated Hamid Karzai on his re-election as President of Afghanistan and asked him to improve governance, besides eradicating corruption. Congratulating Karzai over telephone on his re-election on Tuesday, Obama told the Afghan leader that his administration needs to be more serious in its efforts to eradicate corruption. Later, Obama said that Karzai assured him that he understood the importance of the time of his re-election. â€œBut as I indicated to him, the proof is not going to be in words, it is going to be in deeds,â€ Obama said. Informing reporters about his call with Karzai, Obama said at his Oval Office, â€œI spoke with President Karzai and I congratulated him on his election for the second term as President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.â€ Although the process was messy, the US President said he was pleased with the final outcome as it was in accordance with Afghan law. This, according to him, was important not only for the international community that has invested so much in Afghan success, but most importantly, is important for the Afghans that the results were in accordance with and followed the rules laid down by the countryâ€™s constitution. â€œI did emphasize to President Karzai that the American people and the international community as a whole want to continue to partner with him and his government in achieving prosperity and security in Afghanistan,â€ Obama said.
