Nvidia Tegra Chip Targets Tablets, Low-Cost Laptops

At CES, Nvidia unveiled its next-generation Tegra processor, which is aimed at the tablet PC and low-cost notebook space, the latter of which is dominated by Intels Atom chip. Built on Arms dual-core Cortex-A9 design, the new Tegra is four times faster than its predecessor and offers such tablet-important features as long battery life, high resolution and support for multi-ple screen sizes.

Fujitsu Unveils Eight New LifeBook Laptops at CES

Fujitsu introduced eight new notebooks, featuring versions of Windows 7, Intel processors and various degrees of multitouch. Arriving in January and February, they range from a 1.1-pound mini-notebook to a desktop replacement with an 18.4-inch HD display.

Dell Rolls out New Intel-Based Laptops, Talks About Mini 3 in US

At CES, Dell officials talked up mobility with a host of new and enhanced Alienware, Inspiron and Studio laptops, many armed with Intels news Core processors. Toshiba Outfits New Satellite, Qosmio Laptops with Intel Core Chips

A day after rolling out new Satellite ultrathin laptops armed with AMD processors, Toshiba is launching a host of Satellite, Qosmio and Tecra notebooks with Intels new Core processors. HP Debuts New Laptops, Netbooks, Desktop PCs at CES

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Hewlett-Packard is unveiling a series of notebook, netbook, tablet and desktop computers for personal or business use. Touch-screen technology is a key feature in this lineup, showing the degree to which this technology improved in 2009 alone. Lenovo Debuts New ThinkPad Laptops, Using AMD Processors

Lenovo announced a series of new and revamped ThinkPad laptops with more consumer-oriented features and AMD processors, ahead of this weeks Consumer Electronics Show. Although Lenovo has traditionally focused on the business market, the new devices flashier designs and sleeker form factors are an acknowledgment that the line between business and personal use has blurred for many PC owners. The new ThinkPad X100e also suggests a possible direction for the netbook and ultra-portable market, which has been a boon for PC sales but detrimental to manufacturers’ margins.

10 Notable Netbooks, Laptops and All-in-One PCs from 2009

A global recession made 2009 the year of the netbook. Small, light and low-cost, these portables met the needs of price-pinched consumers and kept the overall PC market afloat. It was also a year that saw a proliferation of multitouch devices, both from Apple #151which even applied touch capabilities to its Magic Mouse #151and tied to Microsoft Windows 7, which arrived Oct. 22. The growing needs of small businesses were also addressed, with notebooks such as the Dell Vostro V13, and slim all-in-one desktops #151whether for power-requiring designers and gamers, or geared toward busy families #151debuted and impressed. Desktops, Laptops Now Get EMC Avamar Deduplication Backup

EMC Avamar is now providing, via the latest version of its Avamar deduplication and NetWorker backup software, enterprise-quality data backup for desktop and laptop computers. The client runs scheduled backups that include deduplication, so that only new documents and changes to existing files and data are sent to storage.
– EMC, a longtime incumbent of the data center, is making inroads into the offices of users.

The storage giant Nov. 17 said it is now providing — via the latest

Samsung, Phoenix Offering Instant-On Technology for Laptops, Netbooks

Samsung and Phoenix Technologies announced that they will work together to bring notebooks and netbooks with instant on-off capabilities to market. Recently, Acer and Hewlett-Packard have offered comparable capabilities.

New Fujitsu LifeBook Laptops, Tablets Offer Windows 7, Multitouch Displays

Fujitsu introduced five new laptops on Oct. 19, all running versions of Microsoft’s Windows 7, which is said to have embedded functionality that greatly complements touch-related applications. The Fujitsu offerings, some of which are now available and some of which will arrive in the coming weeks, are the LifeBook T4410 and T4310, which are enterprise- and consumer-focused versions of convertible tablet PCs; the 15.6-inch LifeBook A1220 desktop replacement; a glossy, 10.1-inch M2011 netbook; and an also glossy, 3.5-pound LifeBook P3010 ultrathin notebook.

On the same day, Gateway introduced a new line of notebooks called the EC Series, which focus on reducing energy consumption and extending battery life. The three models in the series are said to offer 6 to 8 hours of battery life.By Michelle Maisto

Acer Laptops Come Packed with Touch-screen Displays, Windows 7, Android

Leading into the 2009 holiday shopping season, Acer introduced three laptops and even an Android-running smartphone called Liquid, which will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. While the Liquid announcement was a teaser, without pricing or timeline details, Acer was more generous about the laptops. The Acer One AOD250 is a 10.1-inch dual-boot model running both Android and Windows XP Home. The Aspire 5738PG is the company’s first notebook to feature a screen with multitouch capabilities, and the Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ is an 11.6-inch addition to Acer’s Timeline series. Acer additionally announced that it will expand its Timeline series with additional models featuring Microsoft’s Windows 7 and Intel CULV dual-core processors. Hewlett-Packard is getting more touchy by the day about how it wants computer users to interact with its new machines. Thanks to hot-selling devices like the iPhone, iTouch and others, people are getting more accustomed to using touch technology in both home and business environments. So HP has responded: The giant hardware and software manufacturer on Oct. 13 introduced its 2010 lineup of touch-screen laptop and desktop computers that run Windows 7. Several of them will become available Oct. 22, the same day the consumer version of Microsoft’s latest OS version is launched.

The new devices include some cool mostly home-oriented applications such as Pandora (customized Web radio), Hulu (on-demand television), Netflix, Webcam software and the HP Music Store.

Dell’s Vostro line, geared toward cost-conscious businesses around the world, now includes three additional models, the 1014, 1015 and 1088. The new Vostro models are similar laptops in 14.1-inch and 15.6-inch versions, with Intel Core 2 processors and finishes in primary shades of red, blue or black.
