While smartphones, computers and cameras took most of the headlines at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Jan. 6-9, the latest data storage technology was also big news. All these new devices serve huge volumes of data that have to be stored somewhere. That "somewhere" comes in the form of hard drives; solid-state drives; thumb drives; and SAN, NAS and direct-attached rack-mounted storage servers. And while there are not quite as many new storage machines as there are phones and PCs, there are a significant number of new devices from such well-known vendors as NEC, SanDisk, Maxell, Iomega, Seagate, WD, Intel, Buffalo and many others. After all, when Apple released its iPad earlier this year, the tablet craze officially began. And an increasing number of computer makers decided that the time was ripe to expand their own product lines with new tablet designs. That’s precisely why, as of this writing, Apple is joined by Samsung, Dell and several others in the tablet space, all vying to grab a hefty share of this rapidly growing market. But due to the sheer number of tablets that are both available and on the way, it’s much easier now for consumers and enterprise customers to see what’s missing in that space. As popular as tablets are and as successful as Apple’s iPad might be, the devices still fall short in some important ways. The manufacturers must consider fixing those problems in 2011. Red Hat Enterprise Linux has long been a trusty go-to operating system option for most server roles, if not in its official Red Hat branded form, then in one of its respun incarnations, such as the fee-free CentOS or the Oracle rebrand Unbreakable Linux. Based on my tests of RHEL 6, I expect this new release to continue in that tradition& the new release performed as solidly as ever, and benefits from a support term that’s been lengthened from seven to 10 years. While aimed primarily at server roles, RHEL 6 can also perform well as a desktop operating system, as it ships with recent versions of all of the usual suspects of the Linux desktop, anchored by Version 3.2 of the OpenOffice.org productivity suite and Version 3.6 of Mozilla’s Firefox Web browser.
