TEA LEAF GREEN TO PERFORM VIDEO LIVE STREAM AT
BAMM.TV STUDIOS ON JANUARY 12, 2011,
8 PM PST

Tea Leaf Green

It’s no secret bands must look for new ways to connect with fans in the digital era of music. Tea Leaf Green has always made it a
point to offer fans a wide variety of merchandise, recordings, and even radio TLG. Next up on their list—a live
stream performance. On January 12, the band will join up with BAMM.tv (San Francisco) to stream a live studio performance from the band’s
hometown.

A small group of lucky fans in the Bay Area will be invited to the event for BBQ, beverages, and a unique Tea Leaf
Green experience. The band and BAMM.tv are also working together to give the audio from two songs to all those
viewers who tune in to the live performance.

“We are incredibly excited to be teaming up with Tea Leaf Green,” Phil Lang, BAMM.tv’s Music Operations
Director, says. “We’ve been working our tails off for the better part of the year to create a live stream production
with the audio and video quality that lives up to the talents of a band like Tea Leaf Green.”

After a busy 2010, which included extensive touring and the release of their latest album Looking West, Tea
Leaf Green took a much-needed break from the road for the last 2 months. During the down time the band
recorded a new album, tentatively set for release later this spring. Their upcoming performance on BAMM.tv will be
the perfect way to kick off an exciting year for Tea Leaf Green.

Las Tortugas V: Daily Schedule Themes, Adds, Camping Update

PREMIERE INTIMATE CALIFORNIA HALLOWEEN FEST FAST APPROACHES

ALO’s
Zach Gill :: Tortugas IV
By Chad Smith

Las Tortugas – Dance of the Dead V has just announced it’s day-by-day schedule. Check it out here.

Taking place October 28-31 at Evergreen Lodge in Yosemite, CA, Las Tortugas has added Five Eyed Hand, DJ No Parking on the Dance Floor, Who’s DunFour (i.e. Nathan Moore and Big Light) and The Trespassers to an already rich lineup that includes headliners Yonder Mountain String Band, ALO, 7 Walkers, The Mother Hips, Tea Leaf Green and Cornmeal for more
than 30 acts over four days.

One of the great pleasures of Las Tortugas is the daily pageant of costumes that attendees bust out in an elongated celebration of the Halloween spirit. This year’s themes are:

Thursday, October 28 – GYPSY CIRCUS: There are many roles in a circus and many types of gypsies in the
world. What is your interpretation of a Gypsy Circus? Gypsy pirates, dancers, carnies, ringmasters…the list goes on
forever.

Friday, October 29 – DECADE DANCE: Represent your favorite decade in any way you like. Retro cinema,
political statements, historical figures and pop culture are all fine starting points. Time is your plaything!

Saturday, October 30 – MONSTERS vs. ALIENS: Are you a monster or an alien or a monster-alien? Join
your fellow species to unite, multiply, divide or whatever else it is monsters and aliens do.

Sunday, October 31 – THE MASQUERADE BALL: It’s Halloween so come as you wish. Some good ideas
suggested to the festival include Solid Gold, glitter & glam, midnight in the garden of good & evil, wild animal
kingdom, and psychedelic superheroes. Let your imagination roam and then come freak freely with the rainbow
flock!

For those that can’t make the full festival, new ticketing options are now available, with 3-Day Tickets (Fri-Sun) and
2-Day Tickets (Sat-Sun) offered here.

While on-site camping has sold out, the National Forest Service has granted the festival a permit for a unique
camping opportunity just steps away from Evergreen Lodge in what they are calling the Emerald Forest. This
camping area was a huge success last year, and it will provide our guests with a safe and controlled camping area
across the street from Evergreen Lodge. Just like on-site camping, the cost is $15 per camper per night, and there is a 3 night minimum stay required. There is also a one ticket requirement per camper (either the three night or four night ticketing options will satisfy this requirement). There is limited availability for off-site camping, so call the Lodge asap at 209/379-2606 to reserve your off site spot in the Emerald Forest.

WhiteWater Ramble : Debut Album Members of TLG, HBR, RRE Guest

LONG AWAITED DEBUT ARRIVES AUGUST 30

Whitewater Ramble

High altitude jamgrass champions WhiteWater Ramble have announced the release of their debut album, All Night Drive, produced by the highly regarded musician and producer Tim Carbone from Railroad Earth, and featuring a stellar cast of guest artists including Steve Molitz ( Particle, Phil & Friends), Josh Clark (Tea Leaf Green), Erik Yates (Hot Buttered Rum), Grant Gordy (David Grisman Quintet), and in-demand session saxman Pete Wall on saxophone.

For a band whose sound has always been steeped in psychedelic interpretations of bluegrass music, the choice of partnering up with Tim Carbone was the logical choice to helm the WhiteWater Ramble debut project.

“Tim Carbone was WWR’s captain during the recording of All Night Drive, bold and tireless in getting the right performances from the band. His encouragement and support kept morale high in otherwise stressful situations,” says WhiteWater Ramble fiddler and vocalist Adam Galblum. “His studio expertise ensured that we were getting the best sounds for this record, and we felt comfortable deferring to his artistic judgement. While respecting the already-established parameters of our band, Tim knew what he wanted from us, and was clear in communicating how he wanted it. We appreciated that.”

On the flipside, when asked to recount the highlight of working with the Colorado jam rock quintet on their latest album Carbone said, “WWR have their feet planted in more than one world. More than two if you count such things – sometimes all at the same time! No matter which world you prefer; bluegrass, rock, electronica or the myriad combinations, WWR will take you there on a fantastic ride!”

WhiteWater Ramble will perform select rocky mountain regional headlining dates with special guests in support of their new album.

Upcoming WhiteWater Ramble Shows

All Good Festival :: 07.08.10-07.11.10
Marvin’s Mountaintop ::
Masontown, West
Virginia

All Good Music Festival is the premier summer event that completely satisfies its
cheerful, laid-back
moniker in both an audible and societal sense. Nestled comfortably on Marvin’s Mountaintop, the
four day
extravaganza flaunts over 40 hours of music on three different stages with no overlapping
acts, period. Celebrating
its 14th anniversary, this year’s mid-Atlantic holiday held nothing back, scheduling over
35 bands for around-the-
clock performances that left you sacrificing sleep for fear of missing anything.

Unofficially, this year’s All Good Festival had become a multi-day tribute to the music
and culture of the Grateful
Dead. While other mega-acts were peppered throughout the lineup, Dead affiliated groups
were undoubtedly worth
their salt, drawing packed crowds throughout each of their respected sets.

This year, the ingredients for “goodness” were simple: Great music, laid-back vibes,
beautiful scenery, and friendly
people. Dash on some of the best musicians on the scene like Widespread Panic, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, Grace Potter and the
Nocturnals
, George Clinton and
Parliament-
Funkadelic
, etc. and you had a recipe that bolsters the truly celebrates 14 years
of sights and sounds
where life is actually “All Good.”

Bob Weir

Forever Grateful

Friday evening, festival juggernauts Furthur took the stage and performed nearly four hours of material
for the 15th
anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s last performance with the Grateful Dead. Repeating only
three tracks that were
performed at Garcia’s last show in July of 1995 (“Cumberland Blues,” “So Many Roads” and
“Sugar Magnolia”), Furthur
injected vigor into various Dead classics from “Brown-Eyed Women” in the first set to
kicking off the second set with
“Uncle John’s Band” and encoring with “Ripple.” They even glossed over original work with
new track “Colors of the
Rain,” which fit soundly with the unruly weather Friday night.

On Thursday, the Donna Jean
Godchaux Band
opened the musical celebration, honoring the Dead with “Sugaree” and
“Help on the
Way/Slipknot!,” where guitarist Jeff
Mattson
further promoted his ability to mimic Jerry’s playing (and even physical
demeanor) to a T.
Dark Star
Orchestra
, who
headlined Thursday night’s festivities, were the talk of the festival. Faced with
categorical adversity, the Grateful
Dead “cover band” truly lived up to their insistence that they are prolonging the message
of the Dead as a “spirit
band.” Performing an original set, DSO highlighted a series of hits including “Cassidy,”
“China Cat Sunflower > I
Know You Rider,” and “Not Fade Away.” A beautiful sight to be seen and heard, DSO
successfully made believers out
of doubters atop Marvin’s Mountain.

Donna Jean Godchaux

Late Night Revels

Customary to most festival’s late night acts, All Good provided an overnight scene packed
with electronica and DJ
sets by The New
Deal
, Bassnectar, Lotus, DJ Harry
and
others to offer some
momentous fuel to keep the audiences’ tanks off empty.

However, two major highlights of this festival were from late night performers who are not
wedged into the hip-
hop/electronica field. On Saturday night, improvisation laced experimental jazz quartet
Garage A Trois
took the stage and
launched the audience on a journey via manipulated horns, keys, circuit bent toys and
doorbell sounds. Amassing
the best improvisational artists on the scene, this jam band mega-group of Marco
Benevento, Mike Dillon,
Stanton Moore
and Skerik have further positioned themselves as forces to be
reckoned with when
considering the must-see groups on the jam circuit. They performed their staple cover of
Led Zeppelin’s “No
Quarter,” which left half of the crowd struggling to lift their jaws from the grass and
muck.

Following GAT’s Saturday evening performance was bluegrass favorite’s Yonder Mountain String
Band
, who
carried the musical torch energetically into the night. The group hit some newer material
(“Out Of The Blue”) and
rested lightly on covers, channeling Ozzy Osbourne (“Crazy Train”) and J.J. Cale (“After
Midnight”). Diehard fans were
pleased by the band dipping into their first album Elevation with “Mental
Breakdown” and “If There’s Still
Ramblin’ in the Rambler.” Even late into the night, YMSB can re-ignite the sky with
blazing bluegrass riffs and high
energy on stage persona that make the audience in attendance oblivious to the chirping
birds and impending
sunrise as they edge into morning.

Keller Williams

K-Dub Sandwich

Sunday, the final day of the festival, was reserved for Keller Williams, bookending the festival with a morning and
afternoon closing set. The
morning run, dubbed Keller’s Moonshine Breakfast, involved husband and wife duo
Larry & Jenny
Keel
for a set that focused primarily on their new album, Thief (a collection
of cover songs), but
peppered in some hits to the crowd’s delight. Passing out moonshine to all the early
risers, fans were pleasantly
bopping to bluegrass renditions of Marcy’s Playground’s “Sex and Candy” and Kris
Kristofferson’s “Year 2003 Minus
25″ ’til they tipped over. Later in the day, the All Good legend closed the festival with
Keller Williams & The
Added Bonus
, comprised of Claude Arthur, Jay Starling and Toby
Fairchild
. As stated
earlier, All Good 2010 unofficially paid homage to the Grateful Dead throughout the
weekend and as expected, the
Added Bonus put the icing on the cake with renditions of “Bertha” and “Shakedown
Street.”

Widespread Panic

Beyond the Music

Beyond the spectacular variety of music and festivities All Good provides for its fans, it
also contributes its altruistic
nature to the residents of Masontown, West Virginia as well. In a town where the
population tops out at 1,000
strong, it can often be overwhelming to see tens of thousands of “strangers” roll through
your neighborhood for one
weekend each year. But as Tim Walther of Walther Productions explains, All Good
donates funds
throughout the local community and other departments around the neighborhood as a symbol
of gratitude for their
space.

“We generate a ton of revenue to all of the local retail outlets,” he told the
Meadville Tribune. “We generate
a lot of taxes for the state, we put local folks and companies to work for the week and we
hire local nonprofit
groups.”

The festival also donates funds to the local Masontown Fire Department, who provide a
shower service for the event.
All Good also prides itself on working with even larger non-profits like the Rex
Foundation, Conscious Alliance,
Headcount, and Rock the Earth. All Good is truly a festival where the name fits the place
(and the people).

New Mastersounds

Key Covers

Umphrey’s
McGee
wowed
the crowd on a hazy, grey afternoon. Rolling through hits old and new, the jam band
princes performed an
instrumental ” I’m On Fire” (Bruce Springsteen) and a flawless “It’s About That Time”
(Miles Davis). Greensky
Bluegrass
woke up
Shakedown dwellers with “We’re an American Band” (Grand Funk Railroad) on the Grassroots
Stage. Derek Trucks
and Susan Tedeschi kicked off their performance with The Beatles’ ” I’ve Got a Feeling”
and teased Bob Marley’s
“Trenchtown Rock” midway through their set. Donna Jean Godchaux and Jeff Mattson
channeled The Beatles as well,
displaying dual vocals on “She Said, She Said.”

Key Collaborations

Derek Trucks sat in with Widespread Panic to close their first set with “Second Skin,”
“Gimme,” and “Henry Parsons
Died.” Earlier in the evening Panic’s Jimmy Herring sat in with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. Jennifer
Hartswick
played trumpet
with Tea Leaf
Green
on
“Georgie P” as well as joining the Rex Jam during the Everyone Orchestra set. Dark Star Orchestra’s Rob Koritz
sat in with Donna
Jean Godchaux Band and Baltimore’s The Bridge for “Geraldine.”

After playing Las Tortugas for the first time last year legendary Grateful Dead percussionist Bill Kreutzmann said, “I had a GREAT time. It feels like a party.” Tortugas inspires attendees and performers to dig into their full capacity for fun and joy, with an ever-changing array of costumes and joyful distractions floating past one at any given moment. This on top of a musical lineup that has solidified into a vibrant, collaborative extended family of players that fill the entire weekend full of surprises and once-in-a-lifetime moments. A strong sense of community infuses Las Tortugas, with daily themes, special one-off sets (TLG’s Trevor Garrod‘s annual Sunday morning solo performances, Guitarmageddon‘s themed throwdowns), quality, reasonably priced food and a wonderfully immersive feel that marks this as a truly unique experience every single year..

JamBase Questionnaire: Reed Mathis

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen of probing, wide-ranging questions to the bright lights in the jam scene (and beyond). Last time we heard from Keller Williams and upcoming installments will include The Black Seeds, Scott Metzger, Plants and Animals and more!

Few would argue with you if you said Reed Mathis is one of the bassists of his generation. More than once I’ve had friends seeing him play for the first time make Hendrix comparisons, and there’s more than a bit of Jimi’s fire and of-the-moment creativity to Mathis’ style, which mingles fine groove instincts with a precocious knack for taking the bass into places usually reserved for electric guitarists. Few players listen more intently to their compatriots or act upon what they hear with such clear pleasure in making music together with others. He is a constant source of inspiration to his bandmates in whatever setting, driving himself in ways that also stirs up the best in others, elevating the whole of whatever he puts his mind to. As a co-founder and architect of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey for 15 years, Mathis established himself as one of the premiere instrumentalists and top-notch young composers in the jam & jazz worlds, and in recent years has shown a similar flair for rock ‘n’ roll with Tea Leaf Green and new side project 7 Walkers with Papa Mali and Bill Kreutzmann, as well as plying open-ended instrumentalism with the Marco Benevento Trio..

Reed Mathis by Josh Miller

One of the less celebrated but equally lethal aspects of this hyper-multi-talent is his growing production acumen. Approaching mixing boards and recording technology with the same purposeful intensity he employs with his instrument, Mathis has emerged in recent years as a premiere young producer. His mojo was working REALLY well on his JFJO swansong Winterwood, and now he’s captured the finest studio work to date from Tea Leaf Green. Looking West, released yesterday, is the quartet’s most adventurous, sonically switch-on album, finding them playing with vocal textures and scintillating, unpredictable arrangements, while adding ropey muscle to their trademark signature glide.

On Looking West we hear Trevor Garrod unearth his inner Leon Russell – rusty menace and all – while Josh Clark plays with greater subtlety and sings with greater force than we’ve ever heard on record. The rhythm team of Mathis and Scott Rager carries the whole enterprise along so seamlessly that one might initially miss how tight ‘n’ right they’re playing is. And the entire album overflows with small, perfect touches that accent the strength of their songwriting and charismatic delivery. Put more briefly, Looking West is as fine a rock ‘n’ roll slab as you’re gonna hear in 2010. (Dennis Cook)

Here’s what Reed had to say to our inquiries.

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Ungluing your eyes from the teleprompter and saying, “Fuck it, we’ll do it live.”

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
An old, beautiful room, a humongous bass tone, consequence-free improvising, a packed dance-floor, some prepared poems and some surprise solos. And then, a silent, dark, cool place to do some deep breathing.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
Sometimes I’m shy, but it’s not cause I’m not stoked.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
The mockingbirds in the Mississippi River Valley

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Axis: Bold as Love

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
At a good friend’s home in Trinidad, CA. Thanks, Polans!

10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
San Francisco

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Not calling family & loved ones enough, even though I miss & think of them often.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
I’d have to say Beatles. Why, I can’t really say. I do like it a lot though. The Stones, too.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
Carnegie Hall, from the stage

Tea Leaf Green: Summer Shows Looking West Out June 8

NEW ALBUM OUT IN JUNE
APPEARANCES AT WAKARUSA, OYSTERFEST, ALL GOOD AND ROCKS OFF

Tea Leaf Green by Josh Miller

Tea Leaf Green has announced the release of their first studio album since 2008. Set to be released on June 8, Looking West will be available on iTunes, in the band’s online store, and at all of their upcoming shows.

“We’ve been waiting a long time to make this record,” says Trevor Garrod. “It’s almost as if we’ve loved these songs too much and were afraid to encase them forever in a studio album. These songs are messages in bottles washed up on foreign shores, alien transmissions from distant worlds, memories from our fading youth, and reminders of our endless and repetitious search for love and freedom.”

A special pre-order of the album is available now at the band’s online store. Everyone that pre-orders the album will automatically be registered to win a signed copy of the CD and one grand prize winner will receive a 4-pack of tickets to the headlining show of their choice and a private meet & greet with the band. They are also offering a special bundle sale option of a copy of the CD and one of the new TLG shirts for $25, or $22 for a digital download and t-shirt.

Tea Leaf Green will celebrate the release of Looking West on June 16th at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco. To mark the occasion, the band will be performing the album in its entirety with a stripped down acoustic set. Every ticket purchase will also include a free copy of the CD. For more info or to purchase your tickets to this special show, visit tealeafgreen.com.

Tea Leaf Green | 04.17 | San Francisco

Words by: Dennis Cook | Images by: Josh Miller

Tea Leaf Green :: 04.17.10 :: Great American Music Hall :: San Francisco, CA

Tea Leaf Green :: 04.17.10 :: San Francisco

Sometimes it helps with our favorite bands to step back for a spell. Without some distance, they can only be so fresh to us; their changing angles obscured by what we’ve seen and want to see. Tea Leaf Green was one of the first bands I wrote about when I got serious about music scribing eight years ago. Then, playing tiny clubs and searching for their sound, I heard shit-tons of promise, and there’s not many more charming quartets on the planet – something felt in their easy-to-like music and smiling, seemingly effortless stage demeanor. Dramatic personnel changes, a few hundred new songs and countless nights honing them in front of sweaty, happy people have worn away the baby fat to reveal one of the sturdiest American rock bands out there, a group capable of playing multi-night runs at quality theatres like the Great American Music Hall. Having spent many months away from their concerts, I arrived in S.F. open to whatever might unfold. Based on this gig’s resounding evidence, they’ve fully coalesced, a classic four-piece rock combo with talent, tunes and tenacity to spare.

Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers played a lovely opening set to a sparse but increasingly enthusiastic early evening crowd. There’s the pull of flames for moths to Bluhm and her tight, thoughtful boys. One simply wants to move nearer when they ply their newfangled country rock meets skipping pop sound. The initial draw, obviously, is Bluhm’s powerhouse voice and charming phrasing. Don’t even bother trying not to stare or reveal your shock when the full force of her pipes hits you. But, she’s not up there alone, and The Gramblers play with brilliant economy, giving just as much and no more as each moment requires, exemplified by the tasty, leave-them-wanting-more guitar work of Deren Ney. New one “Jet Plane” had the together oomph of electric Fairport Convention and raises hopes pretty high for their forthcoming new album. My money says they deliver and then some.

Tea Leaf’s first set put a shadowy hue on their trademark bounce. Where once they were defined by their “California” feel (nicely revisited in S.F. with “Panspermic De-evolution”), here their collective reach touched on bloody nosed hard rock, jam flexibility, prime ’70s singer-songwriter fare and post-Wilco pop-rock. I’ve always liked them a touch heavier than some TLG faithful, and this gig let the clouds rain strong even though they always ultimately resurfaced into sunlight. Looking Unabomber chic, bassist Reed Mathis possessed a hairy intensity, a powerful aura that silently infiltrated the others, particularly in the grand-fab-tab-u-lous second set, which ranked amongst the very best TLG sets I’ve ever witnessed.

“Weird,” “psychedelic,” “heavy” and “intense” were some of the adjectives folks pulled out around me, yet none of it hints at how much forward motion and honest reflection lies at the heart of their music. For as much fun as one is likely to have at a Tea Leaf Green show, there is something decidedly more profound afoot. TLG is a dance hall band that slips emotion-triggering mementos into your pocket while you’re lost in the smoke, volume and flashing stage lights. It’s only the next day that one really appreciates the full measure of the experience, and it’s that lingering satisfaction that brings one back again and again.
