What will 2011 bring?

What will 2011 bring for the auto industry? On the demand-side, much depends on how the global economy shapes up. In that respect, developments in the US and in China are particularly significant. If the US economy performs as many commentators are expecting it to (they are pretty cautious, but expect some strengthening, especially in the second half), then the gradual rebounding of the US vehicle market should continue.

For China, the concerns surround signs of an overheating economy and efforts by the Chinese authorities to calm frenetic growth. A slowdown to vehicle market growth is widely expected, but how pronounced the slowdown will turn out to be is a big question. If the economy continues to grow at something like 10% a year, with inflation and asset bubble worries subdued, then the car market may continue to run at a very high level.

But the Chinese government may decide to take its foot off the fiscal stimulus pedal and that’s possibly a fine judgement to call if confidence generally starts to wane. After close to 18m units sold in 2010, there might be a bit of fizz in the vehicle market that quickly turns to slack if Chinese manufacturing activity stalls. But people said that last year and the market accelerated in 2010. Much depends on how China’s economy is managed and how Beijing pulls the appropriate policy levers. Confidence is key.

Another issue for China could be chronic congestion in major cities, which may start to see the authorities taking a less accommodating attitude to continued high growth in car sales. That’s definitely something to watch. Even people who are new to car ownership can be put off by epic traffic jams. And if that doesn’t put them off, rationing could be a measure that chokes off car demand very effectively (or causes a boom ahead of introduction…).

CHINA: Beijing drastically limits new vehicle registrations in 2011

In Western Europe, the professional forecasters are saying that we will likely see a slight contraction versus 2010 as the market settles down after the scrappage boom of 2009 that also spilled into 2010.

Further east, look out for recovery in Russia. If Russia’s car market comes back, those who have invested in capacity there will breathe a big sigh of relief. But they will also have to take account of the Russian government’s changing attitude to the industry and foreign automakers. It will likely mean foreign brands with plants in Russia have to source more parts and content in Russia and do it more quickly than they would like. That’s going to be a big challenge for some. The devil may be in the detail.

Expect to hear even more about electric drive technologies in 2011. That is kind of inevitable. With the Chevrolet Volt (range extender) and Nissan Leaf hitting the market, we’ll get a feel for how far consumers really are prepared to embrace such new technologies.

But most of all, expect a few surprises ahead. Where can we look for them? Well, the shape of the global auto industry  – markets, major production centres, sourcing costs and regional specialisms – and the companies within it is pretty uneven. That creates plenty of opportunities for corporate restructuring of one sort or another – alliances, selective collaborations or, indeed, mergers and acquisitions.

Volvo Cars went to Geely last year. Jaguar and Land Rover went to Tata a few years back. We will likely see companies in emerging markets continuing to take steps on to the international stage in 2011. There are major growth opportunities out there and just serving your home market only gets you so far.

Anyway, whatever 2011 brings – and it will certainly be the usual mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly – I nevertheless wish everyone reading this a Happy New Year!

By the way, if you would like to skim through some highlights from the year just gone…

Electric dreams

Nissan’s been proudly showing off its new electric vehicle in Europe this week and appropriately decided to centre the event around the Museum of Electricity in Lisbon.

A former coal-fired power station – the transition analogy was not lost – the Museum houses an extraordinary collection of old power options right next to the Portuguese capital’s iconic monument to its famous discoverers.

And power is something the Leaf most definitely doesn’t stint on. It delivers a surprising torque value according to Nissan equivalent to a 2.5L V6 petrol engine, although when switching to the ‘Eco’ mode for motorways, pulling is clearly not as great.

Noise – or obviously the lack of it – has taxed the Nissan boffins who – in consultation with various blind associations for example – have come up with an engine-mounted system that the manufacturer says produces a sound similar to that of an aircraft taxiing. After 30km/h, tyre noise is deemed sufficient.

Such lack of cabin noise necessitated attention also had to be paid to quietening the wiper motor by 3db, while the headlamps deflect wind over the Leaf’s wing mirrors.

A dashboard gizmo constantly updates the range available – 160km autonomy is sufficient for most journeys – but driving up to 140km/h certainly sees the distance left rapidly diminish. However, an indicator also tells the driver where the nearest recharging point is – just for reassurance’s sake.

The Leaf certainly created quite a stir around Lisbon’s streets this week. The ‘Zero Emissions’ badging caused a fair amount of head turning, while one driver gesticulated at the car “electric?”

My Portuguese isn’t exactly fluent and after his several sentences – delivered at extraordinary pace – I just gave him a thumbs-up, which elicited the rather odd reply in Lisbon of “au revoir.”

And the Japanese couldn’t resist adding yet a further touch of technology. Should you be at dinner having parked your Leaf at a recharging point, a signal can be directed into your restaurant to a Smart Phone that will alert the driver when the car battery is fully replenished.

Oh, and according to Nissan, several Leaf cars together will be ‘Leafs’ and not ‘Leaves.’

Electric cars: A sparky new motor

The first mass-market electric cars are arriving in showrooms. They represent a big gamble for carmakers

THE star of this week’s Paris Motor Show was a Jaguar supercar. The C-X75 can accelerate to 100kph (62mph) in just 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 330kph. It is powered by batteries that are recharged by miniature diesel-sipping jet turbines. Although it is a mere experimental vehicle, the excited response shows that carmakers have come to see electric vehicles as part of their future. How large a part will depend on how drivers react to the rather less racy electric offerings from big producers such as General Motors (GM), Mitsubishi, Nissan and Renault.

The first mass-market electric cars are now arriving in showrooms in America, Europe and Japan (see table). They come in three flavours. Pure electric vehicles like Nissan’s Leaf can be driven for 150km or so before they need to be recharged for six to eight hours. Range-extenders like GM’s Volt (the Ampera in Europe) are powered by an electric motor that can be recharged either from the mains or by an on-board internal-combustion engine. Then there are familiar hybrids like the Toyota Prius, now being adapted to take a charging cord and with a longer electric-only range. …

STS9: Happily Unmoored

By: Dennis Cook

new live acoustic album

Axe The Cables is a smart, impactful title, full of action but open to multiple interpretations, which is only fitting given Sound Tribe Sector 9‘s propensity for openness and freedom of expression. Released on July 29th on the band’s own 1320 Records, comprises an acoustic performance from last December where the live-electronic unit stripped down sonically to play music in front of an audience much the same way it’s originally created in their homes. Taken down to ringing acoustic guitar strings, bright piano chords and feathery, warm bass and empathetic percussion, STS9′s music, as compositions and layered, often utterly lovely, strongly emotional work, shines in a whole new light. While this may be old hat for its creators, the pieces on Axe The Cables showcases what a strong, original instrumental group this is, and how just when one thinks they have them figured out they toss in a wonderful curve or three.

Besides the acoustic release, STS9 also recently composed their second film score for the documentary ReGENERATION, which features leading intellectuals, social activists and cultural figures like Noam Chomsky, Tali Kweli and Howard Zinn. Never ones to be idle, STS9 also recently finished raising $150,000 to build a home with the Make it Right Foundation in New Orleans. And Sound Tribe embarks on a massive summer tour starting on August 11th in New York City with an acoustic “Axe The Cables” performance at the Blender Theater on August 11 followed by a plugged in evening on August 12th at the Roseland Ballroom with special guests Lotus, The Album Leaf and John Hughes (see full tour dates here).

We snagged percussionist and electronic manipulator Jeffree Lerner to pick his brain about the acoustic shows, the band’s continuing efforts to raise social consciousness and more.

JamBase: There’s a rising subtlety to Sound Tribe these days, where you can do the big energy stuff where everyone is tripping out and dancing but you’re also taking time for your band’s equivalent of ballads, getting down to softer material, and that’s often where the real meat of band’s surfaces.

Jeffree Lerner: It kind of reaveals the truth, if you will, when you strip down all the layers and take away all the bells & whistles and get to the core of what’s going on. As much we do appease our fans, I think it’s just representing the diversity of the band as individuals. I think it speaks to our individual interests in music. We love all kinds of music. We’re inspired by all kinds of music. We love to play all kinds of music and really don’t want to limit ourselves to just being an electronic band. And I don’t think that would serve us best anyway because we have all these different facets that we fortunately have an opportunity to express.

JamBase: That leads pretty naturally to talking about Axe The Cables, which has the potential for deep fans to be a favorite, if not the favorite, in the STS9 canon. I’ve been listening to this group for years and this recording/performance allowed me to see into the bones and inner workings of music I thought I knew pretty well.

Jeffree Lerner by Casey Flanigan

Jeffree Lerner: It might be new to the audience but it’s how we’ve made music all these years. I think [David] Murphy even mentions it during the set when he talks about wanting to invite people into our studio to see how we create. And the songs didn’t need electronics to do what they needed to do. We’ve always written music like that with our core instruments and then expanded it. So underneath each and every electronics song is that core of musical instruments.

So, you craft music the way most people do – at a piano or with an acoustic guitar. Was it exciting for the band to expose that fact to sunlight?

It was really exciting for us! Normally, we have a big production with a lot of gear and a semi full of stuff. So, it’s nice for us to prove to ourselves as well that we can play music and move people without having to have semis worth of stuff. That’s not a bad thing but it was an experiment we needed to get out.

And it continues to be interesting because STS9 plans to keep doing “Axe The Cables” acoustic shows on future tours.

Absolutely. And some of those songs are going to grow and become part of the big rock show as well. I think these two sides have always been talking to each other and we finally found a way to express it.

One of the things that came to mind listening to Axe The Cables was how Sound Tribe sometimes gets short-shrift from critics because you work in the electronic realm. Maybe exposing this acoustic side of the band will help balance out the view of STS9′s musicianship.

I think so as well, and there’s also likely a new way into the band for people who’ve never listened to us before. That’s gonna be an interesting path for those people to follow if they start with the acoustic album. It’s interesting because everybody wants to label and put things in categories but that’s something we’ve never felt comfortable with outside of just calling it “music.”

Let’s take what our culture is calling a “jam band.” Obviously, we’re not talking the kind of music that’s being played because you can have a bluegrass band to a band like us to Disco Biscuits to Medeski Martin & Wood to solo Keller Williams. Those things don’t have much in common musically but what they do have in common is music fans willing support bands and live music and that culture in general.

And a community of musicians that’s likewise open-minded. You talk to any of the musicians you’ve named and they’re all curious and never locked into one thing.

STS9 by Dave Vann

Why should you have to decide what kind of music you play? This is art [laughs]. I’m sure painters back in the day hated being locked in a box and labeled and expressionist or whatever. I’m sure they sketched and worked with charcoal and did other things, too. It’s really just the interface between the musicians and the fans. How does a fan express what they’ve heard to a buddy after he comes to a show? How does he express that without the other person being able to see and hear it? It’s an interesting phenomenon.

Do you think it helps to have your own label to put out whatever you come up with and not have it second guessed by suits?

It allows us freedom, and by design. That’s why we created the label to share our art, whatever we create. I think we’ve always been able to look after this aspect ourselves. It’s nobody’s fault but money is the bottom line in this industry, and of course, we have to get paid. We have lives and families, but that’s not why we create, which is for pure expression. We’ve always tried to keep it pure.

That’s easier without someone looking over your shoulder telling you to follow this or that trend.

There are people who give us that advice, and sometimes it makes sense, but it’s not the core of it for us. We can’t be that naïve to think we can cut ourselves off from the world. We have to keep pace with what’s going on. I don’t know that I’d use the word ‘independence’ because truly it’s really an interdependency. Artists sitting alone in a room might make the most amazing art but if it can’t relate or holds no purpose in society or culture it’s not as effective. It’s really a balance.

One of the things I appreciate about Sound Tribe is how you put your ideals into action. Shit, you guys got a whole house built in New Orleans. Was it a trip to raise all the money and know a new home would come out of it?

Jeffree Lerner by Remixes Album

It was a total trip! We didn’t if it would take five years or two or six months. We’re all really pleased it happened as quickly as it did. We just opened the door; our fans did it. There’s a sense of pride in our organization for being able to do such a thing, but the reality is we didn’t do it. Everybody who walked through the door to see us play music instantly became part of something larger than just entertainment, along with the artists who donated their studio time and tracks to the remixes album.

Great things are possible with everybody chipping in some to a much bigger total. But there’s also more subdued consciousness raising going on in STS9, stuff that’s more subtle than shouting at people but effective in its own way.

We joked around about that when we first started, saying we should get up on stage and just say what we believe in and consider important. Probably 2 out 10 people in the room would have pulled out a dollar. I think that in essence is the key to making a difference culturally and making some change. Given the opportunity, most people want to do the right thing, but things in our culture make that hard to do. If you want solar panels for energy they’re more expensive. One random example is I have a cousin who after she graduated high school in Detroit moved to New Orleans to help out, but within the New Orleans community there’s thousands of young people who aren’t helping and collecting [money] from our government. It’s an interesting paradox because they’re not incentivised to make a difference. It’s complicated. We brainstorm a lot about how to work with the audience to make the world a better place. It’s an important part of what we do.

However, the way you communicate these ideas increasingly through years is more through osmosis than direct statements. If one digs deeper into the Peaceblaster website there’s plenty of worthwhile, purposeful tangents to be had, but you’re not leading anyone to these tangents by the hand. This stuff has deeper implications behind it but it’s also sounds that you can shake your ass to.

You can experience on any level you want. I remember having to read books in my high school English class and man, I didn’t to read them or do a report on them. Now, I find myself 20 years down the road and I pick up On The Road by Jack Keroac. Reading it of my own volition makes a huge difference.

So, we’re not going to force anyone to do anything but the trail of breadcrumbs is there if you want to follow it down the line. It’s there in the song titles, in the Peaceblaster website, etc. We’re just finding ways to create opportunities for that [kind of depth]. I don’t want someone to come to a show and be bummed out because they feel they have to do something and really they just want to enjoy it. It’s such a diverse crowd with such diverse intentions. Some just want to dance, some people want community, some people want to part of something larger than themselves, and all those possibilities are there.

A sizzling summer offer

The summer months are upon us, but there has been no discernible slowdown in industry activity that we have seen.

A surge of auto news has seen manufacturers post overwhelmingly positive Q1 and Q2 results – although admittedly from a depleted 2009 comparison. Fiat has been flexing its muscles with its Italian unions, while Geely’s finalised purchase of Volvo has been the development of the summer so far.

And of course the imminent launch of Nissan’s Leaf will see the electric sector burst onto the scene – and into public consciousness. Will governments support EVs with hard cash?

In the background, there are some concerns over the direction of automotive markets next year amid talk of double-dip and continuing world economy uncertainties.

It promises to be an interesting autumn and it’s all added up to a timely means to flex the proverbial muscle of our new site, which is three-months old this week.

As I hope you will have noticed by now, the changes to our service have been made to deliver far greater levels of comment and analysis to you on a daily basis. News may rapidly be becoming a commodity in the digital age, but quality insight into the implications of industry events is harder to find than ever – unless you are a just-auto subscriber of course.

If you are still hard at work, whilst others in the industry fly off on their annual holidays, we thought it would be a good time to combine celebrating the first quarter of our new site, with a gentle pat on the back to those readers who are continuing to keep the wheels of the industry turning whilst others sun themselves.

So for one week only, we have an exclusive offer on just-auto, with a 34% discount on annual membership to the site.

So for just, £99, $198 or €129, you’ll get full access to our daily comment and opinion from leading industry analysts; breaking news and insight into the latest industry developments; a 10-year archive of all news and analysis; interviews with leading industry figures you won’t find anywhere else, and much, much more.

All of this is brought to you by our unrivalled network of auto industry analysts and writers, so don’t miss out. Click here for more information and happy holiday season.

STS9: Axe The Cables Out Now

STS9 RELEASE AXE THE CABLES TODAY ON 1320 RECORDS; SUMMER TOUR KICKS OFF IN AUGUST AT
NEW YORK CITY’S GRAMERCY THEATER & CLOSES WITH TWO NIGHTS AT COLORADO’S RED ROCKS
AMPHITHEATRE

STS9

In December of 2009, STS9
sat down in Denver, Colorado in one of America’s most pristine modern opera houses to create “Axe The Cables… An
Evening of STS9.” What this night encompasses is one of the most flawless evenings of STS9 music in the band’s
decade plus history. The entire show was played, for the most part, sans all “electric” gear including the common
stage instrumentation of laptops and samplers that fans have grown accustomed to as the band’s sound has evolved. The band has
decided to re-mix and re-master this into one massive release on their indie record label, 1320
Records.

Axe the Cables is available now exclusively through 1320 Records and iTunes.

STS9 is on tour in the coming months, performing select intimate acoustic Axe The Cables shows in New
York, Chicago, and Atlanta, as well as plenty of the electronic heavy-hitting events the band is known and loved for,
culminating with their annual, 2 night musical takeover of Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre. STS9 has signed on a slew of supporting acts across the entire tour including Thievery Corporation, Big Gigantic, The Disco Biscuits, The Album Leaf, Lotus, Ghostland Observatory, Bassnectar, Alex B, John Hughes, RJD2, and many more to still to come.

Electrics suit the short tripper

News yesterday from Nissan that, of the individuals (40% of the total) who have pre-ordered a Leaf EV, people aged 60 and up accounted for the largest proportion at 34%, followed by those in their 40s and 50s (25%) while people in their 30s took a 13% share and only 3% were in their 20s.

This reminded me of comments made by a couple of consumer journalists at the recent launch of the Toyota Auris HSD hybrid.

They opined that a hybrid was a far better fit for a fuel economy-minded older driver who might otherwise opt for a fuel-sipping frugal diesel without being aware of a short-trip shortcoming. To meet ever stricter emissions rules, these often have a particle filter in the exhaust which gathers up the gunk but needs a regular decent 30-minute blast down a motorway to burn it all off.

A petrol-electric hybrid like Toyota’s can pootle off to the local shops initially on electric power alone and the petrol motor, which kicks in only when needed for battery recharging or extra oomph, and doesn’t need that regular burn-off motorway trip – or play up if it’s throat gets clogged.

For those who rarely go far, EVs like the Leaf will also be ideal. For the rare occasions when trips beyond the range are contemplated, Nissan has already said it will work with rental companies to offer favourable rates for a long-distance conventionalmobile.
