Little Steven will ring in the new year on his nationally syndicated radio show Underground Garage next week (12/31-1/2) with a look back at the highs and lows of 2010 while counting down his 13 favorite tracks of the year. Top songs from past years have included cuts by Locksley, Cheap Trick, and Foxboro Hot Tubs. Van Zandt will also discuss the best 2010 had to offer in books and films, and even read a passage from Keith Richards’ new autobiography, Life.
In addition, the Underground Garage just wrapped its fourth annual Coolest Song in the World listeners’ poll. Fans voted for their favorite track of the year from artists like The Woggles, Pete Wolf, The Breakers, and Jesse Malin & The St. Mark’s Social. Kid Leo will name the winner on January 3 when he plays all 52 of Van Zandt’s weekly Coolest Song selections from 2010 on Sirius XM’s Underground Garage channel, the Little Steven-produced satellite radio station devoted to non-stop garage rock.

confirmed performers, for their 2011 events. The nineteenth annual Noise Pop Festival, which will take place
throughout San Francisco from February 22 to February 27, 2011, will play host to the likes of established indie rock

HAPPY FREAKIN’ BIRTHDAY, FLEET FINGERS!
There’s not a guitarist worth their salt today that hasn’t been touched in some way by Leo Kottke. Even if not directly influenced by his dazzling approach and command of acoustic guitar, his work has seeped into the infrastructure of all guitar playing since his landmark debut 6- and 12 – String Guitar arrived in 1969. Watch him and the strength in his hands and fevered focus in his eyes make the experience of a dude sitting in a chair picking really bloody riveting, not to mention one’s natural disbelief that one guy is making all that sound by himself with a single instrument. Kottke is also an expert showman and his often bizarre between song rambles and highly unique vocal selections add further layers of cool curiosity to this pro’s pro. Leo Kottke turns 65 today and we hope he gets extra icing on his cake. (Dennis Cook)

One of Kottke’s best vocal albums is 1990′s My Father’s Face, which contains this stony lil’ morning jewel full of odd wisdom and dream fragments.
Ancient and modern streams converge in Kottke’s compositions. To wit, this mingling of Renaissance and Nashville vibes in this clip from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977.
The fluidity and bounce to his 12-string playing is captured nicely in this 1973 BBC clip.
Another sprightly fave from his vocal arsenal.
It’s easy to understand how Kottke and Phish’s Mike Gordon became pals and collaborators after one watches curious experiments like this one. And yes, we tried to find high quality video of Mike & Leo together but it’s all pretty sub-par. Sorry, kids.
Breathtaking kinda covers it with this selection.
Kottke’s storytelling and easy laughter are essential ingredients to his enduring live success. This tale has been part of his repertoire for ages and it never gets old.
We end with Leo in Germany in the late 70s performing “Up Tempo,” “Hear The Wind Howl” and “Busted Bicycle.”

FYF Fest is happening for the second year in a row at the Los Angeles Historic State Park in downtown LA
on September 4, 2010.
In its seventh year, 24 year-old Sean Carlson has taken the festival he started when he was 18 years old out of the
multiple venues in Echo Park, where it started, and turned it into an outdoor, three stage event, mirroring its
successful sister festival “Mess With Texas”, which takes place in Austin every year during SXSW. Sean has been
booking the festival with the help of Keith Morris, frontman of Off!, Circle Jerks and Black Flag, since its third year and now
with the additional help of a handful of friends they have been able to put together the largest truly independent
music festival to take place in Los Angeles.
