BP in Russia: Dancing with bears

BP’s Russian venture is already proving trickier than expected

TONY HAYWARD, BP’s ex-boss, once moaned that he wanted his life back. That was after an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year, which the British oil giant expects will end up costing it more than $40 billion. BP, too, is struggling to get its old life back, even after apologising, helping with the clean-up, dumping Mr Hayward and taking a huge write-off.

He has brought what an admiring report last year termed a “more evangelical” approach to the job, berating as “mercenaries” staff who lack personal involvement in their work and care too much about their generous UN pay and allowances. He has pushed through cuts aimed at making IFAD leaner and fitter.

Yet he is now at the centre of a row over his own benefits. When IFAD’s Governing Council opens its annual meeting on February 19th, one of the agenda items will be the grandly worded “Emoluments of the President”. …
