Shares up on US production data, coal shortage lifts Straits Asia

Singapore shares rose 0.6% by the midday break on Tuesday, following the regional stock market trend as investors took heart from strong U.S. manufacturing data reported overnight.
 
Indonesia-based coal miner Straits Asia Resources (STRL.SI) was amongst the outperformers, as concerns that a shortage of coal due to heavy flooding in Australia could lift prices and benefit miners outside of Australia, traders said.

Croatia lifts visas for Albanians

The Croatian government has decided to abolish visas for the citizens of Albania as of next year, ATA news agency reported.

As of January 1, 2011, the citizens of Albania will no longer require visas when crossing Croatian borders or staying in the country up to 90 days.

Genting Singapore raised to Buy by Daiwa, lifts target

Daiwa upgrades Genting Singapore (G13.SG) to Buy from Outperform, lifts target price to $2.93 from $2.06 based on 18x EV/EBITDA vs 15x previously. Says improved operating environment due to duopolistic Singapore gaming market structure, plus lower tax rate, will continue to support company’s operations. Expects softer 3Q10 results vs 2Q10, tips 11% sequential improvement in 4Q10 EBITDA on year-end seasonal effect. Shares last down 5.7% at $2.15.

Cosco raised to Buy by Citi, lifts target to $2.30

Citigroup upgrades Cosco (F83.SG) to Buy from Sell, lifts target price to $2.30 from $1.40 after increasing FY11-12 earnings estimates by 23%-26%, says Dow Jones.

Citi notes outlook for shipbuilding industry has improved significantly after period of large losses: “Our EPS forecasts are above consensus numbers as we believe Cosco is one of few yards that can deliver strong year-on-year growth even in an industry downturn.”

Research house says consensus view underestimates Cosco’s ability to deliver on margins: “A key development the Street has likely overlooked is the strong progress made through simple fabrication to complex integration work for both rigs and FPSO (floating, production, storage, offloading) vessels. Cosco has also penetrated into windmill vessels, tapping into growing global demand for alternative energy.”

Shares +5.2% at $1.82.

Noble upgraded to Neutral by CIMB, lifts target

CIMB upgrades Noble Group (N21.SG) to Neutral from Underperform, lifts target price to $1.62 from $1.27 after increasing FY11-12 EPS estimates by 15%-17% to account for earnings contributions from Sempra Energy Solutions, which company is buying for US$582 million ($776 million) (including debt).

CIMB says price tag attractive, Sempra Energy’s net margins of 5.0% higher than Noble’s. Notes, investment also provides 14.5% earnings yield vs Noble’s long-term borrowing cost of 6.625%.

Research house says funding not an issue given Noble’s recent bond sales, cash from sale of its Middlemount coal mine in Australia. Shares +6.1% at $1.90.

Singapore Monetary Authority lifts ban on structured-note sale

The Monetary Authority of Singapore said it lifted a ban on the sale of structured notes by CIMB Securities (Singapore) Pte., DMG & Partners Securities Pte., Kim Eng Securities Pte., OCBC Securities Pte., Phillip Securities Pte. and UOB Kay Hian Pte. The move takes effect today, the MAS said in a statement on its website.

Singapore lifts ban on notes for DBS, Maybank, RBS: Update

Bloomberg says the Monetary Authority of Singapore has lifted a ban on the sale of structured notes for DBS Bank and the Singapore branches of Malayan Banking Bhd. and the Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc effective tomorrow.

The three lenders put in place measures to strengthen their internal processes and procedures for offering financial advisory services across all investment products, according to a statement from the central bank today.

MAS lifts ban on sale of structured notes for DBS, Maybank, RBS

Bloomberg says the Monetary Authority of Singapore will lift the ban on the sale of structured notes for DBS Bank, and the Singapore branches of Malayan Banking Bhd. and Royal Bank of Scotland NV from February 12, according to a statement from the regulator today.
