Solar cells are getting cheaper as subsidies subside
THE future, according to MiaSole, a Californian start-up, is unrolling at one centimetre a second in a bland-looking building in Silicon Valley. Despite the location, and the fact that most other solar cells are made from silicon, MiaSole’s cells are not. Ribbons of steel a metre wide and half a hair’s width thick spool through vacuum chambers in which they are sputtered with copper, indium, gallium and selenium—collectively known as CIGS. Out of the end comes a new type of solar cell which promises to be both efficient and cheap.
MiaSole’s current cells turn 10.5% of the light that hits them into electricity. A tweaked version that manages 13% should go into production early next year. Further tweaks have produced cells with an efficiency of 15.7%. This is as good as the best silicon cells and much better than those of First Solar, an American company which uses another cheap technology and is the biggest maker of solar cells in the world. MiaSole says its manufacturing costs work out at less than $1 per watt of generating capacity. This is better than all silicon-cell-makers and far less than the $3 per watt of Solyndra, a rival CIGS firm that won a large loan guarantee from the American government to build a big factory. …

LMA +12.5% on share buyback, but volume light
LMA International (L24.SG) +12.5% at $0.315 on surgical mask maker’s $0.36/share stock buyback exercise for up to 10% of each investor’s stake.
While move will help bolster EPS, return some cash to shareholders, overall interest remains low, in line with stock’s historically limited following.
Small market cap of $157 million, based on yesterday’s closing price, means LMA not on radar screens of many institutional investors. Orderbook quotes suggest minimal upside from current levels.
Offer valid till Dec. 29, with payment due Jan. 17. LMA will also pay interim dividend of $0.01/share on Feb. 1. As at end-September, company has US$43.9 million ($57.3 million) in cash, or about $0.10/share.

Obesity: Does light make you fat?
When—not just what—mice eat affects how much weight they put on
THE blame for rising obesity rates has been pinned on many things, including a more calorific diet, the spread of processed food, a lack of exercise and modern man’s generally more stressful lot. Something else may soon be included in the list: brighter nights.
Light regulates the body’s biological clock—priming an individual’s metabolism for predictable events such as meals and slumber. Previous research has shown that, in mice at least, the genes responsible for this can be manipulated so as to make the animals plumper and more susceptible to problems associated with obesity, including diabetes and heart disease. It was not known, though, whether simply altering ambient light intensity might have similar effects. …
City of Light – in the rain
It’s my first Mondial de l’Automobile or Paris Motor Show and after a relatively uneventful journey, I’ve just arrived in a very rainy City of Light City of Light and checked in.
No matter how many times I come to Paris – and I used to live here – you might as well land on Mars coming from the UK – and I’m sure the French say the same coming to London.
From the 60s-inspired Terminal 1 at CDG – that somehow seems to have survived – in all its brutalist concrete – to the smell of the underground, croissants, coffee and that utterly distinctive architecture of central Paris – France is just, well different.
And it’s fair to say my Parisian billet isn’t exactly the Georges V – as I write this I am looking straight out at flats opposite – quintessentially festooned with classic black railings – into which my new neighbours are going about their business in unfeasibly close proximity.
But what it is, is about eight minutes walk from the Show and knowing the place a bit I am relieved not to be battling through a French Metro rush hour – which is much like the rush hours I used to endure in London – but with a lot more shouting.
I’ve just had a quick peek around the Show – it’s in the South of the city at Porte de Versailles – and it’s as if a hundred of the world’s largest rock shows have just arrived to set up.
Everywhere I look, there are vast amounts of huge speakers, lights and equipment being unloaded by hundreds of roadies speaking every language imaginable.
There are six – or is that eight? – vast halls here and I’ve got to be at Opel/Vauxahll at the crack of sparrows in a while for a breakfast briefing – but at least I’ve got the lie of the land now.
And I’ve just seen my first minute creature on a lead – what the French otherwise seem to refer to as ‘dogs.’ It must be Paris.
