The LotusLive collaboration suite, an IBM cloud service providing rich e-mail, calendar, contact management, instant messaging, social networking, file sharing, Web conferencing and document collaboration services, is a rebrand of the existing LotusLive Notes and Engage cloud services. Available at a much more affordable price than before& starting at $10 per user per month& LotusLive works well on Macs and PCs alike, supporting Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 3.6 and Safari 5 well. Support for mobile devices such as the Apple iPhone and iPad is also possible using a scaled-down Web interface along with a free conferencing app. While the e-mail, PIM services and social networking shone in tests, the collaboration and conferencing tools lagged behind other audio and video rich cloud applications available today. Challenging Google in the cloud computing market for messaging and collaboration software, IBM landed Panasonic as a customer for its LotusLive SAAS programs. More than 150,000 workers at the Japanese electronics maker will use IBM’s hosted e-mail, social networking Web conferencing, file sharing, instant messaging and project management applications. The company unseated Microsoft’s Exchange e-mail server and a number of other collaboration solutions, including IBM’s original on-premise Lotus Notes and Domino server. The news comes days before IBM kicks off Lotusphere in Orlando, Fla.
