Is that a double chin? Supposedly-single heartbreaker Zac Efron’s piling on the pounds for reasons that have got nothing to do with his recent breakup from longtime galpal Vanessa Hudgens. The usually-svelte Efron is cutting a chunkier figure on the red carpet these days after gaining nearly 20 pounds (so far) to play an Iraq [...]

Face value: Marc Simoncini: Lucky in love
A serial entrepreneur shows France how to love, and how to fail
WILD and passionate lovers are much admired by the French establishment. Wild and passionate entrepreneurs, not so much. Marc Simoncini, the founder of Meetic, Europe’s biggest dating website, is therefore something of an outsider. His career has seen more ups and downs than the romances he helps to spark. “I have been poor, very rich, ruined and now very rich again, at least on paper,” he says.
Mr Simoncini comes from upwardly mobile stock. His grandfather was a poor farmer. His father worked his way up the ranks of France Telecom. Mr Simoncini dropped out of college after an internship at a company that worked with Minitel, a pre-world-wide-web online service. In 1986 his father lent him FFr20,000 ($3,000) to start his own business. After a false start he founded Opsion, an IT-services firm. …

Face value: Li Shufu: China’s lucky man bags Volvo
Has the founder of Geely, an upstart carmaker, got what it takes to revive Volvo?
LI SHUFU, the chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, China’s biggest privately owned car firm, and from this week of Sweden’s Volvo Cars, likes to describe himself as the Henry Ford of China. There are some similarities. Both men began life down on the farm and both quickly discovered they were more interested in engineering and building businesses than ploughing fields.
Unlike Ford, however, who grew cranky and anti-Semitic as he aged, the 47-year-old Mr Li seems admirably grounded. Although one of China’s richest men, he dresses inexpensively and lives in a modest Beijing apartment. In conversation, he smiles and chuckles frequently. His only known eccentricity is a weakness for writing verse. He has published more than 20 poems on his personal website and another is woven into the carpet in the reception area of Geely’s Hanghzhou base, 100 miles (160km) southwest of Shanghai. …

Actor R. Madhavan seems to have taken a fancy for the number “three” as most of his recent films with the same digit have been hits and his upcoming ventures also carry the number connection.

Has a successful presidential election in Honduras helped to legitimise a military coup?
THE members of a conservative coalition behind the toppling of Manuel Zelaya as president of Honduras, on June 28th, have since been betting that presidential elections would serve to legitimise their military coup. Despite intense pressure from abroad, the de facto regime that has been running the country in recent months was convinced that foreign leaders would in the end refuse to punish a successor government for earlier sins. The test came on Sunday November 29th with the completion of a relatively peaceful vote, which the centre-right candidate Porfirio Lobo Sosa won comfortably. To the great chagrin of observers across the hemisphere, it seems the result will be respected and the strategy of the coup-plotters will be rewarded.
Local human-rights groups insist that a free and fair election was impossible in the current situation. They point to a series of abuses ahead of the vote: intermittent suspension of anti-coup media outlets, suppression of large opposition rallies and the declaration of a state of siege shortly before the polls opened. Moreover, the self-described “resistance” movement appeared to have the de facto president, Roberto Micheletti, in a bind. By calling for massive protests on election day, they would either discourage many prospective voters from turning out, or force him to disperse them by force in front of international observers. …

Which Americans have been married most?
FOR almost half of America’s brides and grooms, wedded bliss eventually turns to divorce misery. But many go on to marry again (and then again) in the search for the perfect mate. According to Census Bureau data gathered for the first time in 2008, the keenest on remarriage are those in Arkansas and Oklahoma, where over 10% of women who have ever been married have been hitched at least three times. The proportion of men (of those ever married) who go on to have at least three weddings is lower: 9.7% in Arkansas and 9.3% in Oklahoma. Southern and western states have the highest shares of those who are thrice (or more often) married, partly because of younger median marrying ages, more poverty and poorer education. New Jersey and Massachussets have the smallest shares for both women and men.

Irish voters decide the future direction of the European Union
THE fate of the Lisbon Treaty rests in the hands of 3m Irish voters on Friday October 2nd. For the second time they are being asked to vote in a referendum on a new rulebook for the European Union that would make it harder for individual governments to block initiatives, and that would create powerful new posts to represent the union around the world. All 27 countries of the EU must ratify each new treaty and Ireland is the only one which must still hold a vote to approve Lisbon.
Irish voters rejected the treaty in a referendum just over a year ago, amid fears that it would weaken their country’s traditionally outsized influence in Europe. In particular voters said they were unhappy that Lisbon would see the European Commission shrink, so that not every member of the club had a commissioner at all times. Following the shock of the Irish No vote, other European leaders issued binding pledges that this rule change would be reversed, and that if Lisbon came into force, the Irish (and all other EU countries) would keep “their” commissioner. Irish voters also received solemn written declarations that Lisbon did not affect Ireland’s cherished military neutrality, nor its laws on abortion or taxation. …
