John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett :: 01.13.10 :: Wilbur Theatre :: Boston, MA

Lyle Lovett by Nancy Nutile-McMenemy

Ever wonder what it would be like to invite the legendary singer-songwriters John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett over to your house for an evening of song and good times? Well, during the pos- blizzard of 2011 in the intimate setting of the Wilbur Theatre in Boston an event very similar to such an “ever wonder” scenario took place for a sold out crowd.

Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt are on tour together; performing in small, intimate theaters for, at least in New England, sold out audiences. They two are so comfortable with themselves that they make you feel like you are sitting in the living room with them, getting to know them better through their songs.

They play well off each other and their banter at times can get very humorous. Hiatt arrived Tuesday before the storm but Lovett flew in Thursday morning. This discussion lead to the two thanking the crowd for coming out and also gushing over Logan Airport, with Lovett saying, “Love what you’ve done [with Logan].”

In these “together” shows, the two take turns playing songs from their huge repertoires and at times sing harmonies or play guitars on each other’s songs. A truly supportive jam session results. Hiatt opened with “Open Road,” the title cut from his most recent CD, and Lovett followed with “Farther Down the Line.”

Hiatt next took the crowd on a road trip with his classic “Tennessee Plates,” which made Lovett exclaim, “It’s really a song about a self-starter,” and “It certainly has a Zen quality to it.” Lovett continued his critique by saying the main character “finds true love,” has a “Mecca to Graceland,” and in the end “learns a trade.”

Lovett spoke about being in a restaurant the other day when Eric Clapton’s version of Hiatt’s “Riding with the King” came on the radio. Lovett whined, “Clapton’s never recorded one of my songs!”

Lovett spoke about his experience this past December when he worked with The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles. Artistic Director Ben Donenberg asked Lovett to write a few songs for a production of Much Ado About Nothing. Donenberg explained to Lovett that Shakespeare used to include songs, from the time to time, to lighten up his plays when they “weren’t going so well” said Lovett. Lovett performed a lullaby that the he said he “felt like he co-wrote with Shakespeare.”

Hiatt killed on “Drive South,” after which Lovett put away his guitar and said boldly, “I quit.” But he pulled it together and wowed the crowd with “Natural Forces,” the title cut from his most recent CD.

John Hiatt by Nancy Nutile-McMenemy

Hiatt jumped in with “Crossing Muddy Water” to which Lovett responded with “If I Had A Boat.” Hiatt tore through “Riding with the King” and then both Hiatt and Lovett thanked the audience again for their support over the years saying that Boston is a great music town. Lovett ended appropriately enough with “Closing Time.”

The crowd jumped to the feet, thanking them for a great evening and after a small pause, the two returned to the stage. An audience member yelled out for Hiatt to play “Icy Blue Heart” and Hiatt said, “Well, alright!” and proceeded to once again awe the crowd with his skillful lyrics and masterful guitar playing. Lovett chose to finish the night off with “My Baby Don’t Tolerate” and was joined by Hiatt on harmonies and a stinging guitar solo on his gorgeous blonde Gibson with the mother of pearl inlays.

The crowd was again on their feet and the two, like gracious guests, thanked the audience again and jogged off stage.

The Last Waltz Ensemble: Holiday Show and CD Release

SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR CELEBRATING THE BAND’S FINAL SHOW

The Last Waltz Ensemble

On Friday, November 19, 2010, Smiths Olde Bar in Atlanta will host The Last Waltz Ensemble‘s all star
celebration of The Band‘s final show at Winterland for a seventh consecutive year. The show has become a
tradition, an annual trek, a night for fans to dance, sing along, revel and remember. This year will feature opening
sets by Turtle Folk and O’Mello-Cello Tree, as well as guest performances by: Oliver
Wood
, Jon Liebman, Jessica Sheridan, David Fisch, Preston Holcomb
from The Grapes, Tracey and Chad from Moontower, Coy Bowles from The Zach Brown
Band and many more.

“Maybe people come back year after year to memorialize The Band’s departed brethren, Rick Danko and
Richard Manuel, maybe to remember a young Bob Dylan. Or perhaps to remember Costello, we
will have a lot of the same guys on this show that were on Sean’s last show, or a Last Waltz Ensemble moment from
the last 6 years. One thing I know is that the material is the glue. It might be the glue that keeps them coming
back.”

The Last Waltz Ensemble has just completed another tribute to The Band’s tunes with New Orleans Jokerman, an
effort recorded in New Orleans and Atlanta with many of the finest musicians in each city. The LWE took a pull of
Dylan and Band tunes and seasoned a fine gumbo with the zest of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, George Porter
Jr
, members of The Neville Brothers, The Radiators, Blackberry Smoke and even the great
Francine Reed from Lyle Lovett’s Large Band fame.

Track list:

Lissie: Feb/March Dates

LISSIE ADDS FEBRUARY, MARCH TOUR DATES

Lissie

On the heels of her recent tour with City and Colour, Lissie has announced new tour dates for February and March.

She will travel to London this week for two shows – including a performance at the HMV Next Big Thing Festival – before returning home to headline two of her own gigs, on Valentine’s Day at Muddy Waters in Santa Barbara, CA, and on February 16 at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, CA. Lissie will then head out to sea to perform on the Cayamo 2010: A Journey Through Song cruise from February 21-26 alongside Emmylou Harris and Lyle Lovett, among others. Beginning March 11, she will tour in support of The Low Anthem en route to SXSW. Lissie is also now confirmed to perform on select dates of the Lilith Fair tour later this year.

Lissie’s Why You Runnin’ EP was released November 10, 2009 on Fat Possum Records and has been earning the young singer high praise, with coverage in Bust, Filter, Marie Claire, Nylon, and Under The Radar, among others. In addition to the recent Best of What’s Next profile in Paste, the Boston Globe included her in their Names To Know in 2010 feature, declaring she is “…not so much a soul singer as she is an incredibly soulful Americana artist who finds the sepia-toned sweet spot between Neko Case, Laura Marling, and the Shangri-Las.”

Her live shows have been drawing acclaim as well, with Soundcheck Magazine‘s blog writing, “The first time I heard Lissie on Minneapolis’ ‘The Current’ I had only one reaction: this is the breakout artist of 2010, I’m calling it now. Seeing her perform live at Central Presbyterian Church in Austin, TX merely confirmed this assumption. Lissie, standing like a dirty angel under the cross performing…singing, wailing, about angels following her home – pretty freakin epic if you ask me.”

Lissie has also recently stopped by a number of outlets to record or film live sessions, including: Baeble Music‘s Guest Apartment, Daytrotter, The Fader‘s Open Bar, HearYa, and Yours Truly.

John Hiatt: The Open Road

JOHN HIATT TO RELEASE THE OPEN ROAD MARCH 2

John Hiatt

Looking at life through the rearview mirror was the inspiration for John Hiatt‘s brand new album, The Open Road, due out March 2 via New West Records. The legendary songwriter’s 19th studio album is classic Hiatt, picking up the tempo and returning to rock following his previous critically acclaimed Same Old Man.

Backed by his touring band, (Kenny Blevins on drums, Patrick O’Hearn on bass and Doug Lancio on guitars), the songs are inspired by life on the road, without looking back. “All the other years, my songs are about coming home,” Hiatt says.

Hiatt will take the new songs on the road beginning with a run of international dates with Lyle Lovett. Upon returning to the states, he will appear on the 3rd annual Cayamo Cruise, on which he’s played since the first voyage. Tour dates in North America will follow in March, with stops in New York City on March 10 followed by Pittsburgh, DC and Annapolis, which is already sold out.

Hiatt has written songs covered by a multitude of artists in a wide variety of genres including Bob Dylan, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Jewel and Bonnie Raitt, who most famously recorded “Thing Called Love.” On The Open Road he showcases both his lyrical and musical talent with his blues driven, rock songs including the title track and “Haulin’.” Hiatt produced The Open Road himself after recording with his band in his garage-turned-studio.

Danny Barnes: New Album

PIZZA BOX AVAILABLE NOW DIGITALLY AND IN STORES JANUARY, 2010

Danny Barnes

Danny Barnes, banjo pioneer and a founding member of the Bad Livers, a seminal Austin alternative country band, has digitally released his new album, Pizza Box, through ATO Records. Pizza Box can be purchased through all digital retailers, as well Barnes’ ATO page here. It is Barnes’ first release since being signed by Dave Matthews to his New York-based ATO Records. Matthews, a longtime fan of Barnes, also contributed the cover illustration for Pizza Box.

On Halloween, Barnes wrapped up an 18-date tour supporting the new album, spanning much of the Northeast and Midwest.

With Pizza Box, Barnes spins tales of American life like a latter-day John Steinbeck, wielding banjo and pen with equal effect, and the character of his voice as the perfect mouthpiece to truly bring these songs and stories to life. Pizza Box comes stuffed with sharp hooks and addictive vocal and instrumental melodies, but it’s Barnes’ storytelling skills that shine the strongest. He tells tales with the wry wit and humor of Garrison Keilor, the lyrical eccentricities and intellect of Randy Newman, and performs with the southern twang and swagger of Levon Helm. Barnes combines and blends all of these elements into a style that is uniquely his own.

“Overdue,” the lead single from Pizza Box and already receiving airplay, is a moving look at a relationship that’s endured some rough times. The track is one of three that Matthews sings background vocals on. The album was produced by John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Jason Mraz) and recorded at Haunted Hollow in Charlottesville, VA. It features Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam, David Bowie, T Bone Burnett) on drums and Rashawn Ross (a touring member of Dave Matthews Band) on horns.

According to Matthews, “Danny Barnes’ Pizza Box is my favorite new music, my favorite rock record, and my favorite country record. From the first time he sat down and played me ‘Road,’ I knew his next record was going to be great, but I didn’t expect this. The music is smart and soulful, and the lyrics are profound. It is heaven and earth. It is Americana, from the back porch to the pulpit, shattered dreams on angels’ wings. I can’t stop listening. In the haze of over produced, ‘perfect’ recordings, Danny Barnes spent less than two weeks banging out an album that may well save your soul.”

“The label ‘true original’ gets bandied about too often these days, but Danny Barnes deserves it,” said Paste Magazine, while the Austin American Statesman has hailed Barnes as “One of the most wildly imaginative musicians on the planet.”

The list of artists Barnes has performed alongside is as eclectic as his music and includes Bela Fleck, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Gov’t Mule, Bill Frisell, and members of the Butthole Surfers, Dead Kennedys, and Ministry. Barnes is prominently featured on two tracks on Dave Matthews Band’s latest album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass | 10.02-10.04 | S.F.

Words by: Sam Martin | Images by: Dave Vann

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival :: 10.02 – 10.04 :: Golden Gate Park :: San Francisco, CA

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009

Golden Gate Park played host to the 9th Annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, and the lineup, crowds and camaraderie did not disappoint.

There was a sixth stage added this year, the Towers of Gold Stage, and although Speedway Meadow was pushed to its capacity, it didn’t seem to bother the estimated 500,000 that turned out for this year’s extravaganza. The event felt well organized and with 80 top-notch bands performing for free all weekend, there was hardly anything one could really complain about.

Financed by billionaire investment banker and amateur banjoist Warren Hellman, this year was the largest by far and has already been touted as a success. Which leaves one to ask, “Where can it go from here?” Hellman, a bluegrass enthusiast and lover of music who started this Festival in 2001, made his money as the founder and chairman of San Francisco-based Hellman and Friedman LLC, a private equity investment firm. So, what makes him so far removed from his peers? With his nickname, The Hillbilly Millionaire, his band, The Wronglers, and his passion for bluegrass, he most surely stands out from his associates. This being said, it hasn’t always been such an eclectic festival. Yes, from the onset it’s been subsidized by Hellman and it has always been a bluegrass festival, but it wasn’t until 2003 that the “Hardly” was added to the name of the festival and artists from almost every genre were invited.

Friday, 10.02

Friday the meadow was filled with a variety of fans, not to mention the lucky middle school students from the local district that got to spend their afternoon in the park watching music. Speaking with a few students who seemed ecstatic to be at such a large festival, they were amazed that it was free to the public. Of course, MC Hammer playing “Can’t Touch This” probably went over their heads, and although his time as a headliner has past, that did little to diminish his performance, and the fact that he’s been included in the festival the past couple of years shows the diversity in artists that get to play.

The highlight of Friday was John Prine, who played in the afternoon as a notable chill picked up out of the West as festivalgoers dug into their packs for sweatshirts and blankets. Prine, never one to stick to just singing, interspersed songs with commentary, though he nailed hits such as “Angel From Montgomery.” The evening was dazzling, with a feel of autumn in the air as Prine and his formally dressed band exited the stage. It almost felt like the perfect note to leave on, but it was worth waiting around to hear a few songs from Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. With an ear-to-ear grin, Lovett never disappoints, and as a live artist he rocks and rolls, playing off the crowd and did so until darkness brought the day to a close.

Saturday, 10.03

Steve Martin :: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009

Saturday started with a bang at the Star Stage with Great American Taxi, a bluegrass/country-rock mix featuring Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon. It was exciting to hear the way they approached their songs. They strayed from the typical bluegrass routine and jammed out a few tunes with amazing banjo and bass rhythms.

Next stop, back to the Towers of Gold Stage, as I planned my day around a tight schedule and an increasingly crowded park. With the wind now starting to shift from a mild breeze to whirlwinds and dust storms, Buddy Miller was on the agenda. As Miller made his appearance, the music was sweet and melodic but almost too much so, and then to much fanfare and surprise Buddy’s old boss Emmylou Harris came out, looking stunning as usual. She was not expected to perform until Sunday afternoon, so this came as a nice surprise. Speaking of nice surprises, an amazing appearance by Robert Plant, who played last year with Alison Krauss, came as a total shock, and they covered Hank Snow’s “I’m Moving On” – an electric moment for sure.

Another great band that some overlooked was Okkervil River, an indie rock act from Austin, Texas. Their chemistry onstage was so moving that after their set I was ready to buy a few of their albums, Black Sheep Boy and Golden Opportunities being what was recommended. They amassed a nice crowd at the Towers Stage as the wind continued to whip and wallop the meadow as the audience loosened up for a day of dancing, clapping, and cheering.

Steve Martin could fit in with almost any bluegrass outfit of his choosing. A little known secret about the well-known actor and comedian is that music and the banjo have always been his first love. He has, of course, incorporated this into his stand-up routines, but his humor takes nothing away from his raw talent as a musician, and he absolutely rocks onstage! The Steep Canyon Rangers, the band that he has played with more and more lately, are incredible. Martin was captivating and never one to shy away from humorous commentary, but the music, while slightly drowned out by the wind’s howl, still hit hard. The percussive beats that flowed from his banjo were mesmerizing and made one wish this show could have gone on forever.

As Saturday morning turned into Saturday afternoon, the crowd of 300,000 was making itself known, cramming onto hillsides, on top of portable bathrooms, and into trees. Nick Lowe performed on the Star Stage, which was less than impressive, most likely because by this time the sound was suffering due to the wind and din of a very large crowd. As I departed I could make out “Cruel To Be Kind,” but it was time head to the Banjo Stage for Gillian Welch. Happily settled in front of the stage, where the acoustics were great for this entire set, Welch displayed her beautiful voice and rhythm guitar licks. The wind seemed to die down completely as she bellowed out “Wrecking Ball.”

Sunday, 10.04

Emmylou Harris :: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009

Sunday was the day I was most looking forward to. The day started windy but not bothersome, and it wasn’t too crowded as I made my way to the Rooster Stage to see Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3. They had me at the sound check. His Americana musical influences came through strongly on songs like “The Falling” and the rocking “Give It To The Soft Boys,” with his voice mixing well with The Venus 3. Hitchcock played many of the newer songs off of his latest album, Goodnight Oslo, and though his show was more Americana, being a British born singer-songwriter, he teamed up well with Peter Buck (R.E.M.) in his recent work to create an Americana-Indie hybrid that was lovely. An awesome start to a long wind swept day.

At this point it was off to the Star Stage to catch The Chieftains, an Irish band that has been playing their traditional Irish folk music and upbeat rhythms for over 40 years. This got me thinking about how much Irish folk music has influenced bluegrass in America. Leaving the Star Stage, it was back to the Banjo Stage to see the honorable Earl Scruggs. If it wasn’t for people like Scruggs we would not be having this festival, and for someone born in 1924 he brought it to the stage at full steam! The connection he shared with the crowd as they cheered him on was overwhelming, and I felt honored to see him perform again. I hope he returns next year. What a living legend!

Regretfully, I missed the amazing piano work of Allen Toussaint, but when there are 80 bands to choose from you can only catch so many. However, I struck up a conversation with a couple from New Orleans who had seen Toussaint and would not stop talking about how beautifully he played. You can’t see it all and if you happen to get stuck in one of those amazing moments like I did with Earl Scruggs, then you’ve gotta go with the flow. The night ended with a gorgeous set by Emmylou Harris, another Hardly Strictly Bluegrass staple, and then a long set that went past twilight from Old Crow Medicine Show.

Other great sets included Neko Case and Aimee Mann, not to mention a much talked about “White Room” cover by Robert Earl Keen.

What I came away with, besides three days of diverse and terrific music, was a feeling of community that was lacking at other festivals in Golden Gate Park this past year. People seemed happy to just be there. Maybe it was the lack of a price tag or the intimate, grassy area that was shared by so many. Whatever it was, I’m Hardly ready to see it go, this weekend in San Francisco was strictly a pleasure.
