AutoCAD for Mac 2011 Brings Powerful Tools to Mac

Although it’s taken Autodesk more than 18 years to bring its CAD software back to Apple’s Macintosh platform, there’s something to be said for waiting until it can be done properly. AutoCAD 2011 for Mac takes the market-leading tool for which Autodesk is famous and couples it with an interface that remains true to the Mac environment. The software recognizes multitouch gestures on supported input hardware, and it’s possible to browse AutoCAD files in the Mac OS X Finder with the Cover Flow option. It includes support for the company’s AutoLISP programming language and ObjectARX extension applications, as well as the command line interface that allows users to bypass the software’s menus and palettes and enter commands directly for ultimate efficiency. This is a complete rewrite of the application for the Mac, and many potential customers will focus on what’s missing, especially in the areas of layering and workflow. But as a first pass&#151or, at least, the first one in almost 20 years&#151AutoCAD 2011 for Mac is rather impressive. – …

Email Servers Posted By : Lokendra

Sending and receiving emails is something that is done in such a mundane manner that we never stop to think how this automatic, quick mail communication takes place. The key element in email communication is the email server.

Email communication is made possible by SMTP and POP3 or IMAP server types. The most widely used mail-client software is Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird, and Mac OS X’s Mail. All these email software packages perform the same function, which is downloading incomi

Apple Security Loopholes Open Mac App Store to Piracy

Mac App Store Opens for Business

The Mac App Store debuted on Jan. 6, providing a new way for developers who focus on Mac OS X applications to sell their wares online, in exchange for Apple taking a 30 percent cut of the proceeds. In creating this outlet, which builds on the success of the iTunes App Store, Apple is offering people an alternative way to buy applications that taps into many peoples need for instant gratification. But the Mac App Store as it exists is going to run into the same problem that weve found with the iTunes App Store; as the number of available applications grows, the store becomes increasingly difficult to browse, and is exponentially less useful with every month that passes. The absence of any side-by-side comparisons and the lack of breakdowns within a category mean that customers will waste time trying to find what they want. Although Apple will undoubtedly call the Mac App Store a success, its disappointing to see that the company hasnt learned from its earlier efforts. – …

Eight Things We Expect to See from Apple in 2011

The New Year will bring a lot of surprises, but it doesnt take a quick shake of the box to figure out some of what Apple has on tap for 2011. Between the shakeup of application distribution contained in the Mac App Store, a new "Lion" release of Mac OS X, and new versions of the iPad and iPhone expected before midyear, theres a lot more going on with Apples product plans than the routine enhancements to processors and graphics. The big question for some users will be: will Mac OS X Lion be the last release of the operating system for server-side computing, or will Apple exit that market entirely, to focus more closely on its burgeoning consumer business? In any event, the increasing use of consumer devices in IT environments will mean good news (and healthy balance sheets) for Apple in the coming year. – …

Laplink Switch and Sync Useful but Lacking

Switch & Sync, from Laplink Software, will save a lot of time for users who want to salvage documents and e-mail files from a Windows PC and move them to a Mac OS X computer. It offers a simple alternative to the old way of doing things: repeated drag-and-drop copying of directory hierarchies, followed by invoking a mail conversion utility. But it needs some work before it is fit for use in all but the most controlled or trivial circumstances. It is severely lacking in the areas of security and user interface, has only the most rudimentary of logging abilities, and ignores the built-in authentication, security and user interface features of the Mac platform. For ongoing use, caution is necessary, because this is a tool that should raise an audit flag in any organization committed to regulatory compliance and adherence to governance schemes. But for instances where security can take a back seat to convenience, the simplicity and low price of Switch & Sync make it an attractive choice. – …

How to rip DVD to iPhone & iPod Touch format Posted By : JasmineGuo

No doubt you can purchase movies from the iTunes Store ready for iPhone/iPod Touch consumption, but if you already own the DVD, you don’t want to waste your money on the same movie a second time. Instead, you can rip the DVD to a video file on your computer, move it into iTunes Library, and then sync it to your iPhone/iPod Touch. The program I’d like to recommend to do this is called HandBrake, and it’s available for free on both Windows and Mac.
The following tutorial will show you how to rip DVD to iPhone/iPod Touch format using HandBrake. You can follow this guide to convert DVD to iPod Touch/iPhone whether you are using Windows OS or Mac OS X.

Mac Malware Attacks Prompt Security Vendors to Rush Out Antivirus Tools

Security vendors are saying that attacks on the Mac are now significant enough that Apple users should invest in antivirus software for what was once the "invulnerable" platform. With Koobface variant Boonana fresh in people’s minds, the concept of a virus attacking Macs seems less laughable than it did even two years ago. "Mac users must remember that less targeted is not the same as invulnerable," said Richard Wang, manager of SophosLabs. The threat is still not that prevalent, with only "one to two" attacks on Macs each week, compared with the "tens of thousands" per day against Windows PCs. Mac OS X has only 10.6 percent market share in the United States, according to IDC and Gartner, but the day hackers will find the platform worth targeting is not far off, vendors said. Mac antivirus software is not new, but it used to have a bad reputation for being resource-hungry and inconvenient. That’s soon to change as vendors release new Mac antivirus tools that are quite unobtrusive. Here are some of them. – …
