The internet: How long will Google’s magic last?

It flourished during the first phase of the internet. The next one may be tougher

“GOOGLE is not a conventional company. We do not intend to become one,” wrote Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the search firm’s founders, in a letter to investors ahead of its stockmarket flotation in 2004. Since then, Google has burnished its reputation as one of the quirkiest companies on the planet. This year alone it has raised eyebrows by taking a stake in a wind-energy project off the east coast of America and by testing self-driving cars, which have already covered over 140,000 miles (225,000km) on the country’s roads.

Google has been able to afford such flights of fancy thanks to its amazingly successful online-search business. This has produced handsome returns for the firm’s investors, who have seen the company transform itself in the space of a mere 12 years from a tiny start-up into a behemoth with a $180 billion market capitalisation that sprawls across a vast headquarters in Silicon Valley known as the Googleplex. Google also stretches across the web like a giant spider, with a leg in everything from online search and e-mail to social networking and web-based software applications, or apps. …

Disney’s schools in China: Middle Kingdom meets Magic Kingdom

A Western media company offers a product the Chinese can’t resist: education

ON A Tuesday at 6pm, children begin arriving at a bland commercial building just as the office workers are leaving. A small storefront leads to an English-language school run by Disney. It is not much of an entrance, squashed between a dusty drugstore and a fast-food joint. This being China, many passers-by assume it is a fake. But word is spreading through the pushy-parent network: this is the real thing.

Children as young as two toddle in and climb the stairs. At first glance, their classrooms look like dreary boxes, but two of the four walls are interactive video monitors. Each lesson is assisted by virtual mermaids, ducks, mice and other Disney icons. Touch the answer to a question (a fried egg, for example) on one screen, and it plops out of the sky on the other. While teachers instruct, the classroom seems to move. …

RIM’s BlackBerry Magic Formula: 10 Ways to Reclaim It

As RIM’s BlackBerry Torch hits store shelves, the company is facing more pressure than ever. For now, RIM is putting on a brave face, trying to show its customers that it knows what it needs to do in order to beat back the Apple and Google invasion of its turf. But in reality, RIM is lost. The Torch and its new operating system show that RIM still believes it’s 2005 when it was top dog in the smartphone space and there wasn’t a serious challenger on the horizon. Today’s mobile marketplace is a different space altogether and it’s becoming increasingly hostile toward the BlackBerry. But that doesn’t mean that RIM is powerless to change the situation. The company can follow several strategies to help turn things around in its operation. Read on to find out how RIM can recapture some of its past glory. – …

Magic Trackpad is a Winner

The San Jose Mercury News reviewer Troy Wolverton gives Magic Trackpad a 4.5/5 rating, calling it a “winner” and noting that it “could give other desktop users a good reason to finally ditch their mice.” He concludes, “I like the Magic Trackpad a lot and hope it will spark imitators on the PC side.”

There’s Magic on Your Desktop

Gadgetwise blogger Nick Bilton at The New York Times reports taking Magic Trackpad for a test drive that covered “two-finger scroll on Web pages, pinch and zoom on images in Apple’s Preview application, and a number of other multitouch features.” He concludes: “I’m pretty certain I will never own a traditional mouse again, at least when I use an Apple computer. Instead I will own a trackpad — a Magic Trackpad.”

Magic Trackpad an Excellent Mouse Alternative

Seattle Times reviewer Jeff Carlson calls Magic Trackpad “an excellent mouse alternative” and “a fascinating addition to the Apple hardware lineup.” He also mentions the new Apple Battery Charger, noting that it “pulls much less power (30 milliwatts) once the batteries are charged compared to other battery chargers.” About Magic Trackpad Carlson concludes: “…if you want to take advantage of Multi-Touch gestures on a desktop computer, it’s a stylish and solid implementation.”

Thumbs Up for Magic Trackpad

Enjoy yourself on the Magic iPhone 4 Posted By : Angelesb

Apple’s launch of the iPhone 4G has seen the greatest excitement for a new phone ever – and with HD video recording, a perfect screen and ridiculously slim dimensions, it’s not hard to see why.
If you’re an iPhone fan, there’s a good chance you won’t like the look of the iPhone the first time you pick it up – it’s the same weight as the iPhone 3GS at 137g, but it’s a lot smaller, with dimensions of 115.2mm x58.6 mm x 9.3mm, so it feels like a much weightier and compact model.

Efterklang: New Album/Free MP3

EFTERKLANG ANNOUNCE MAGIC CHAIRS RELEASE, OFFER “MODERN DRIFT” AS FREE MP3

Efterklang

Two months after joining the 4AD stable, Efterklang have announced details for Magic Chairs, the band’s third full-length studio album and their first for the label.

Slated for release on February 23, Magic Chairs is Efterklang’s most accessible and immediate album to date. Unlike the lengthy gestation of 2007′s critically acclaimed Parades (“Dazzling MMMM” Mojo) that saw the band isolate themselves in their home-town of Copenhagen for more than 18 months, Magic Chairs was a far more organic and close-knit affair and a marked departure in terms of approach and execution.

During brief breaks from touring in early 2009, and with help from members of their seven-piece live band, the four core members of Efterklang began to develop song sketches into more elaborate arrangements in Tel Aviv and Portland. Taking the songs on the road and testing them out on their U.S. tour allowed the band the luxury to fine-tune and hone each new track, before returning to Denmark in the spring to begin the task of recording. Engineer-producer Gareth Jones (Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Wire) was drafted in to mix Magic Chairs in London; another first for the band.

Talking about Magic Chairs the band explains “We are very proud of this record and feel that it introduces a new Efterklang sound. The songs draw inspiration from pop song structures, created and recorded with a live approach and we wanted to display every sound source clearly so that the listener can hear every ingredient of the music.”

Magic Chairs‘ opening track, “Modern Drift,” can be downloaded here.

Apple Polishes Mac Line, Conjures Up Multitouch Magic Mouse

Apple refreshed three of its popular computers #151the all-in-one iMac, the 13.3-inch MacBook and the sans-screen, 2.9-pound Mac mini #151as well as introduced a brand new way of thinking about the mouse. The introductions came a day after Apple, amidst a PC market only gently getting back on its feet, blew away analyst expectations by announcing quarterly profits of $1.67 billion #151a number that reflected the 3.05 million Macs that Apple sold in the quarter.By Michelle Maisto
