JamBase Questionnaire: The Old Ceremony

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Roots of Creation.

Smart, full of different colors, hooky as hell, Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s The Old Ceremony are everything rock should be but usually isn’t. One picks up on the same vibe that infused late period Beatles and early Tom Waits, but tempered with a pleasantly jaundiced eye and a sonic range that touches on tango, folk, sophisticated jazz, Arabic tones, punk and more. What’s more impressive is how they harness this variety into frameworks that get the job done in just a few minutes.

The group has grown from strength to strength on each successive album, with their latest, Tender Age, coalescing their many charms into a series of super catchy cautionary tales for lovers and dreamers. The curveballs come fast on Tender Age, where seemingly dark titles like “Gun To My Head” and “Ruined My Plans” are snappy love songs, one tune is sung in Chinese, and the whole thing simmers down to a gently spiritual hum that sneaks up and leaves one reflective in the best of ways. (Dennis Cook)

The Old Ceremony plays next at the Motorco Music Hall Benefit for Central Park Charter School on Friday, January 28 in Durham, NC, then on Friday, February 4 in Raleigh, NC as part of the Kings WKNC Double Barrel Benefit. After that The Old Ceremony will open a string of dates for Rooney that will hit Philly, D.C. and more Find full tour dates here.

Here’s what TOC singer-songwriter-bandleader Django Haskins had to say to our inquiries.

The Old Ceremony

Instrument of choice: Picasso guitar, barroom piano
Nicknames: “Dave”

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Breaking some eggs. The older I get, the more impatient I am with safe choices.

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
The Cars’ Heartbeat City

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
The Walkmen album You and I. It’s the aural equivalent of oversaturated 35mm film: rich, almost rotten colors bleeding into each other nostalgically with occasional bursts of sad yellow light. I lived in that album for at least a year.

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
Elvis Presley. Or Humphrey Bogart. Or a Harlem Globetrotter. I was a mixed up kid.

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
The surprising one. We always enjoy playing together, but every so often there’ll be a show that shows all the signs of being a downer before we start, but explodes into overjoydom. On nights like that, I usually can’t stop grinning at everything that happens onstage.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
I still have all my fingers.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Rocky beaches. I used to wander beaches in Maine and Nova Scotia in the summers, smashing rocks down on the ground hoping that one would split and reveal a geode. Never found one, but it got out a lot of my childhood angst.

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust or Rum, Sodomy and the Lash by The Pogues

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
We’ve have some great ones. Off the top of my head, I’d say Vatan, a prix fixe Indian place on E. 37th St. in NYC.
10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
The frozen foods section. And house concerts.

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Staring listlessly at trees flying by for hours on end. And my cowboy mouth.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
The Beatles. They actually reinvented themselves over and over. The Stones, though I love them, found one good sound and stuck with it. I prefer variety, if I have to choose only one.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
A long distance bus ride in China that was so crowded that the only place I could stand was on top of a basket of pig parts heading to market.

The first-ever Nateva Music & Camping
Festival
was an impressive launch for an event that CEO Frank Chandler hopes will become an annual
institution. Factors ranging from attendance to lack of on-site camping may have caused the promoters headaches,
but for ticket-holding music lovers, Nateva demonstrated that there was no better place to spend 4th of July
weekend. Every new event hits a few roadblocks, so below are a list of weekend highlights, as well as a few thoughts
on how to improve the festival for next year.

Top Highlights

1. The McLovins
These teens from Connecticut have developed a cult following thanks to their self-made YouTube videos going viral.
Although they were far from top-bill, anyone who attended their Saturday afternoon performance will tell you they
dished out the best set of the weekend. If further acknowledgement was needed, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips had the acne-clad teens
grace the stage in costume during the Lips’ headline set. No other performers had the crowd wound so tightly
around their finger at any point in the weekend, Wayne Coyne included.

2. The Electronica Acts
Nateva booked psychedelic, reggae, hip-hop, and jam bands galore, but no genre represented quite like the
electronica acts. Ghostland
Observatory
‘s laser lights show was Friday’s highlight, and the night before Lotus served up a solid set of dance-
grooves that let the early birds get the party started. Concluding at 4:20am, EOTO‘s performance was by far the
best late-night set of the weekend, and Sound Tribe Sector 9‘s sundown set was the largest dance-party of the weekend,
featuring the single best sound quality heard during any of the 50-plus performances on the roster.

3. Joe Russo of Furthur
There’s not a whole lot left for Phil
Lesh
and Bob
Weir
to do with the Grateful
Dead
catalog that they haven’t already done. That’s why it was the latest addition to the Grateful Dead family
that really made the show interesting. Joe Russo has backed Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio to fill the shoes of Jon Fishman on tour with G.R.A.B., and as half of the Benevento/Russo Duo he’s made a name
for himself as one of the finest drummers of our generation. More than “Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s
Tower,” a cover of “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” Bobby’s short-shorts or the 4th of July fireworks, the highlight of Furthur’s set
was hearing how Sir Joe Russo brought new life to decades-old Dead tunes.

4. The Logistics
Nateva offered up the lineup of a national-scale festival with the creature comforts of a backyard BBQ. For a first-
time event, Nateva aced all of the “details” that can make or break a festival. All on-site camping was a short
distance to the stage, and Wayne Coyne was spot-on when he commented that the Port-O-Potties were “clean
enough to eat off of.” The sound system was golden, but most the important logistical factor was the effectiveness
of security. For any festivalgoer whose been up at night in their tent, annoyed or unsettled by the hissing of a
nitrous tank or overly rowdy neighbors, you would have been well-rested at Nateva. The events security team
walked the fine line of keeping hands-off while effectively asserting control over the premises. “Personal use” was
openly engaged in throughout the weekend but the sketchier, more-aggressive elements that come along with the
drug trade were checked at the door. This played a large part in what made Nateva the most family friendly festival
around.

3 Tips For Next Year

1. More Sensible Scheduling
On paper, scheduling Umphrey’s
McGee
and Keller
Williams
to go on before moe. is a smart move, but not when you have Jakob Dylan and Passion Pit in between. These are
all solid acts that deserve a place at Nateva, but when moe. is the biggest act of the day, you should orchestrate the
bill around the jam band crowd. Umphrey’s played an uninspired afternoon set prior to Keller Williams’ performance,
but after those shows, the overwhelming majority of the attendees went back to camp until moe. came on. As a
result, Dylan, Passion Pit and Jackie
Greene
played to a near-empty field and the rhythm of the day’s schedule was thrown off. The non-
jammy acts should have gone on prior to groups like Umphrey’s and Keller. Everyone loves eclecticism, but if you’re
catering to a jam band crowd, be sure to give the actual jam bands priority over the crooners and indie darlings.

2. Lower Ticket Price
The festival-going masses have proved time and time again that they are willing to pay $250 for a weekend of music,
if it’s worth it. But events charging that much tend to be more like Bonnaroo Music Festival than Newport Folk Festival. Nateva caught a
break when the Rothbury Music
Festival
announced they were not holding an event this year, but if they come back next summer, Nateva will be
in direct competition. If Nateva wants to survive, they’ll need to make their product more competitive by charging
considerably less for admission.

3. Increase On-Site Camping
Increasing on-site camping is the single most important change needed to ensure this events survival. Nateva had a
15,000-person capacity but only a third of those ticket holders were offered on-site camping. The rest were
expected to camp 2.5 miles from the event and be shuttled back and forth. Needless to say, this was not popular
with potential attendees and the empty off-site parking lots testified to that. On-site camping sold out in advance
and was a major hit, but if Nateva wants to turn a profit and draw in a max-capacity crowd, they’ll need to find a way
to offer everyone in attendance on-site accommodations.

Nateva/High Sierra Festival Previews

By: Dennis Cook, JamBase Associate Editor

As the summer festival season rolls on, JamBase looks ahead to 4th of July weekend with helpful links and considered suggestions for two major gatherings, one in the East and one in the West.

Nateva Music & Camping Festival

Maine hasn’t had a gathering like the inaugural Nateva Music & Camping Festival before. A more intimate cousin to big boys like Coachella and Bonnaroo, Nateva is a three-day (or four if you count the Thursday night warm-up with Gypsy Tailwind, Lettuce and Lotus) jam-happy event, July 2-4, at the 100 acre Oxford Fairgrounds, which are just a couple hours from Boston and 45 minutes from Portland, Maine. With headliners moe., Grizzly Bear, The Flaming Lips, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, STS9 and festival closers Furthur, this is set to be an auspicious debut.

Nateva organizer Frank Chandler told the Bangor Daily News today, “It’s all about creating this little temporary community that is centered around music. It’s uniquely intimate, since we’ve capped ticket sales at 15,000. It’s not like other festivals, where there are just thousands upon thousands of people. We don’t want anyone to feel overwhelmed. That was always the goal.”

Sounds like a good mindset and game plan for a fine festivarian experience. And here’s a few pointers of our own for your listening adventure.

1. Greensky Bluegrass :: Friday :: 12:05-1:05 PM :: Main Stage 1

There’s a curious, compelling mixture of roughneck energy and brainy sophistication to Greensky. They dabble in bluegrass ways but have just as much in common with the rowdy cleverness of early Ozark Mountain Daredevils and fellow contemporary rules breakers the Punch Brothers. They’re also super swell when they take things down a bit, making folks lean in and plucking heartstrings as efficiently as their instruments.

2. The Heavy Pets :: Friday :: 5:30-7:00 PM :: Port City Music Hall Stage

There’s no dirth of ambition in the Pets, who proudly wear the “jam band” tag in an age where it’s increasingly less cool. If groups played with as much fire or snaking imagination as this Florida outfit then it might not be on the slide. The Heavy Pets have built a fan base the old fashioned way, i.e. through tireless touring, which has sharpened their chops and grown their catalog extensively. The lines between rock, reggae, electronica, soul and prog get blurred nicely in the Pets, who just released their self-titled sophomore album in May.

3. Crash Kings:: Saturday :: 3:15-4:15 PM :: Main Stage 2

Dirty ass rock ‘n’ roll rarely happens without guitars, but there’s wonderful exceptions like the Crash Kings, a trio with serious whomp that’s got keys as their primary assault weapon. Throw that on top a rhythm section that reminds one of a robust young Zeppelin plus a singer with the raw energy of young Rod Stewart and you’ve got good times. Our guess is they’ll bring it hard in this afternoon set.

4. Nate Wilson Group :: Sunday :: 1:15-2:00 PM :: Port City Music Hall Stage

Melodic hard rock has few better allies than former Assembly of Dust keyboardist Nate Wilson and his fine Group, who in more than a few ways nod back to the original Jeff Beck Group with AOD guitarist Adam Terrell burning hot front and center on many pieces (though the guy has a Gilmour-like subtlety, too – definitely one of rock’s under-sung greats). What the NWG has over the competition is super strong songwriting that scoops out the yummy parts of rock and serves them up in a really appealing way. JamBase awaits the follow-up to their killer debut impatiently.

5. Moonalice:: Sunday :: 1:45-2:45 PM :: Main Stage 2

Moonalice delivers good ol’ hippie freak rock with a genuine love of festival type folks, you know quality weirdos who like to kick down a door of perception or three but wanna boogie a touch as they break on through to the other side. This rising West Coast group is working on being a national concern and this is a chance for our East Coast readers to get a taste of what we’ve been enjoying in the Bay Area for a spell.

The good folks at iClips will be webcasting from Nateva here during the festival.

High Sierra Music Festival

The High Sierra Music Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. From Thursday, July 1st through late Sunday, July 4th, the mountain fairgrounds in Quincy, CA that serve as home to this fest will overflow with great music and hearty companionship. With tents and RVs surrounding the performance spaces and the most casual artist-fan relationship in the fest circuit, High Sierra stands apart in many ways. The “hang” is all, and it casts a spell over attendees and performers alike, where often the guitarist who shredded your mind in the afternoon is standing next to you in the evening while headliners like Widespread Panic, The Black Crowes, Railroad Earth and The Avett Brothers (it’s nigh impossible to hold a summer fest in 2010 without them!) flatten the masses. You’ll both have the same stupid, entirely copacetic grin on your faces, too.

Here’s five winners from the broad assortment on offer this year.

1. Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers :: Thursday :: 12:15-1:30 PM :: Vaudeville Tent

It’s worth getting set up early so you can leave your tent behind and catch this nooner with one of the most talented, charming young singers and bands on the West Coast. They’ve got the swerve and bluesy slap of vintage Linda Ronstadt and Traci Nelson & Mother Earth, though their straight pop chops ain’t shabby neither. In a nutshell, good, good, good rock ‘n’ roll fronted by a powerful, fetching singer. What the hell else do you need to kick off your revels?
[Nicki & The Gramblers also perform on Friday from 11:30-12:45 pm on the Big Meadow Stage]

2. Nels Cline Singers :: Thursday :: 7:30-8:45 PM :: Vaudeville Tent

People who only caught wind of mind-blowing guitarist Nels Cline after he joined Wilco have whole worlds to explore in Cline’s past, not to mention his ongoing solo, projects with gifted pals like Jenny Scheinman and more. However, it’s with the Singers that one feels closest to whatever internal mojo fires up Cline. Flanked by Devin Hoff (contrabass, bass guitar) and percussion & electronics whiz Scott Amendola, Cline veers into hitherto unexplored sonic spaces. At times jarring or unexpectedly beautiful in the strangest places, the Nels Cline Singers harness adventurousness to some of the best musicianship we’re likely to witness at HSMF 2010.
[The Singers also perform on Friday from 11:15-12:30 pm in the Vaudeville Tent]

3. Rubblebucket :: Friday :: 4:55-6:20 PM :: Vaudeville Tent

Frequently those that delve into Afrobeat sound like mere copycats, though many come off well due to high energy presentation. What’s swell about Rubblebucket is how they clearly draw from Afrobeat’s ideas but mingle them with bits of Talking Heads and other rhythm-wise modern rock. Hailing from three fine B’s – Burlington, Boston and Brooklyn – this is a cool opportunity for West Coasters to experience one of the most justifiably buzzed about bands on the circuit right now.
[Rubblebucket also plays Thursday 3:30-4:45 in the Vaudeville Tent]

4. The Black Seeds :: Saturday :: 2:20-3:40 PM :: Vaudeville Tent

New Zealand may not be the first place one thinks of when it comes to quality funky reggae music, but that might change real fast once you hear the Seeds. With a reach way beyond roots reggae (though they do that well, too), this band makes honestly soulful music with one of the strongest vocal mixes around. And their compositions are smartly drawn and full of perfect, unexpected twists and breakdowns. Come prepared to sweat a bit.
[The Black Seeds also play Sunday 1:45-3:00 on the Big Meadow Stage]

5. Newfangled Wasteland :: Sunday :: 5:30-6:45 PM :: Big Meadow Stage

You ain’t never heard Beck like this. Made up of Trevor Garrod (Tea Leaf Green) on keys & vocals, bassist-singer Steve Adams (ALO, Big Light), guitarist Chris Haugen and drummer-singer Dave Brogan, the quartet shows real affection and just enough irreverence to make the material soar. Even the more familiar Beck ditties wiggle differently in their grasp, and their knack for unearthing pleasures in deep cuts is something else.
[Newfangled Wasteland also plays 2:30-3:45 pm on the Grandstand Stage on Thursday]
