Nokia purchases some of the assets of Plum, a company that specializes in cloud-based social media and messaging technology. Nokia, which is looking to strengthen its mobile app offerings against the likes of Apple and RIM, says it plans to integrate the technology with its Services unit.

Fraser & Neave’s 3Q profit climbs 11.7% to $123.2m : Update

Fraser & Neave, Singapore’s largest beverage maker and a property developer, said third- quarter profit climbed 11.7% as home sales surged.

Net income for the three months ended June 30 climbed to $123.2 million, or 8.8 cents a share, from $110.3 million, or 7.9 cents a year earlier, the company said in a statement today. Revenue increased 12.3% to $1.35 billion.

HTC, Maker of Android Smartphones, Drops Revenue Forecast for 2009

High Tech Computer (HTC), the Taiwan smartphone maker known for its popular devices running the Google Android operating system, such as the T-Mobile G1 and myTouch, has significantly lowered its revenue forecast for 2009. The only manufacturer immune to the current economy, it seems, is Apple.
– Smartphone maker HTC lowered its 2009 revenue forecast for the year,
after the Taiwan stock market closed for the day on July 31.

Instead of growth of about 10 percent, the Taiwan-based company is now
predicting a “low to mid-single digit” fall in revenue, according to a

IBM to Buy Analytics Software Maker SPSS for $1.2 Billion

In an expansion of its Information on Demand initiative, IBM is looking to buy longtime partner SPSS, which makes predictive analytics software, for $1.2 billion. The move will expand IBMs ability to offer customers solutions they can use to mine data and turn that information into a strategic business asset. SPSS officials called the two companies complementary and said the breadth of IBMs portfolio, resources and customer base will be an advantage for SPSS customers and employees.

Rolls Royce to build new plants in UK, Singapore

Engine maker Rolls Royce (RR.L) said today it would build or extend four factories in Britain and open a new plant in Singapore, creating new jobs in both countries.

The British company plans to invest over 300 million pounds ($712 million) in the UK where unemployment is running at the highest rate in 12 years. The government will contribute 45 million pounds towards the projects which are expected to create or secure 800 jobs.
