Orthopaedics: Plastic surgery

A newly developed material should make it easier to mend broken bones

MUCH of modern medicine is high-tech wizardry. Broken bones, however, are still dealt with in a clumsy, old-fashioned way that frequently involves screws, nails and pins. Even the simplest operation can result in infections and incomplete healing if those devices are not placed as they should be. In dramatic circumstances—for instance on a battlefield, where surgeons cannot use X-ray machines and there is no proper operating theatre—the need for so many bits and bobs can make effective surgery impossible. Thousands of soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, for example, have had limbs amputated after injuries that could have been treated at any hospital.

It was with them in mind that DARPA, the research-funding agency of America’s Department of Defence, approached a group of scientists at the University of Texas, Houston, two years ago. DARPA wanted something that army doctors could carry in their bags and use to mend injured limbs on the spot, before amputation became inevitable. The researchers, led by Mauro Ferrari and Ennio Tasciotti (who have since moved to the Methodist Hospital Research Institute in the same city) came up with an idea that could change orthopaedic surgery once and for all: a material that surgeons can implant or even inject; which fixes a fractured bone quickly; and which then leads to its full regeneration, with no need for nails and pins. …

Ezra (5DN.SG) is up 2.2% at 2-week high of $1.85 as investors look beyond subdued fiscal 3Q10 results to prospect of stronger earnings in coming quarters, with company adding new vessels to expand range of subsea services, says Dow Jones.

“While associate EOC’s (EOC.OS) loss last quarter was a surprise, it will not have a major impact on Ezra’s earnings and should not overshadow a creditable showing by its parent, an improving outlook and expansion into new markets for both companies,” says CLSA, which has Buy call with $2.30 target.

Nuclear family gathering

Barack Obama brings the world to Washington to try to keep track of loose nuclear material

IN 2007 armed gunmen attacked a nuclear facility in South Africa, breaching heavy security before they were chased off (and never caught). The incident illustrated that the possibility of nuclear materials falling into the wrong hands is far from an abstract one. The fears come in three separate but related forms: that nuclear weapons might fall into the wrong hands; that weapons-grade highly enriched uranium and plutonium that could be used to make nuclear bombs might go missing; and that larger amounts of other radioactive material, from discarded X-ray machines to spent fuel, might be used to make a dirty bomb. Securing nuclear material now means getting more states than ever to co-operate. This is what the nuclear security conference that opened in Washington, DC, on April 12th hoped to achieve.

With 46 countries attending, and many sending their leaders, Barack Obama’s administration sold the conference as the beginning of a new era. The last time America gathered so many world leaders gathered at the president’s invitation was when Franklin D. Roosevelt convened them to create the UN. Mr Obama’s more modest goal for the meeting was to produce some steps towards securing all nuclear material within three years. …

Material world

President Obama leads the effort to secure nuclear materials

BARACK OBAMA is hosting a two-day nuclear security summit with 47 heads of government in Washington, DC. A year ago, in Prague he announced a four-year initiative to secure all vulnerable nuclear material around the world. The risk that terrorists might acquiring a nuclear weapon, he said, “is the most immediate and extreme threat to global security”. According to the Belfer Centre at Harvard University, there is around 1.6m kg of highly-enriched uranium and 0.5m kg of weapons-grade plutonium in the world. The combined amount is enough to build more than 200,000 nuclear weapons. As the summit ends on Tuesday April 13th, President Obama will be cajoling countries to make individual pledges and sign a joint declaration to secure the world’s nuclear material.
