Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band | NYE | Review

Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi :: 12.31.10 :: Florida Theatre :: Jacksonville, Florida

Derek & Susan by Ray Proetto

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi put their solo acts on hold in 2010 to write and make music together with a fresh new band. In April they began playing new songs, trying to find their identity. Ten months later they have evolved into a cohesive unit, putting out sets of music that flow as majestically as the nearby St. Johns River into the Atlantic Ocean. Their New Year’s Eve celebration took place near the river banks of Jacksonville, Florida.

After an opening set from Scrapmatic, the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band began their NYE set with “Don’t Let Me Slide” followed by my personal favorite “Midnight in Harlem,” a hopeful tune with a comforting and familiar feel. Derek & The Dominoes tune “Anyday” saw Trucks sliding up and down his guitar, evoking cheers from the attentive audience. The show took a turn down Funky Street with “Love Has Something Else to Say.” Brothers Oteil (bass, Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (keyboards, Derek Trucks Band) emanated fun-loving grooves from their corner of the stage all night long, making way for some patrons to sashay in their New Year’s attire up the aisles of the Florida Theatre (until being told to sit down by security).

Horn section by Ray Proetto

Kebbi Williams flowed through his saxophone across the stage, inspiring impressive leads from Oteil. Though this marked only the second show with the horn section, put together specifically for this New Year’s run, it seemed as if they had been in the band since April. Joining Williams, on trombone, was Saunders “Service” Sermons and Maurice “Mo’ Betta” Brown on trumpet.

The execution of the Eric Clapton arrangement of “Presence of the Lord” had more and more people finding their way to their feet. However, most in the audience remained unsure of what to do with themselves physically, most remaining seated and grooving cerebrally. Mike Mattison took lead vocal duties on Taj Mahal‘s “Leaving Trunk,” which made way for new blues number “That Did It”. The verses have Mattison and Mark Rivers laying down playful background vocal harmonies with Motown-esque Aah-ooh’s while Susan sings a soulful tale of heartache.

It is no secret that Susan is a world class vocalist, but on “That Did It” her guitar skills were front and center. She laid into her instrument with enough soul and power to make the ghost of Sister Rosetta Tharpe proud. Her approach to the six-string is a no-gimmick, loud and subtle reminder that she is the mother of Derek Trucks’ children.

Derek Trucks’ role as bandleader is performed perfectly. He gives everyone else onstage the space they need to become who they are musically. At times, when all eyes turn to him for a solo, he will defer the moment to someone else. Once everybody has found themselves in their given space, Trucks’ bright red Gibson SG is implied. With a meditative expression on his face, Derek tears sonic holes in the universe; each one providing grist for the mill of his spiritual journey with a guitar.

“Learn How to Love” is a thick swamp-fueled song that Derek and Susan wrote with Eric Krasno. Max Roach’s “Garvey’s Ghost” made an appearance late in the set featuring a powerful, tribal and lyrical drum solo which started with Tyler “The Falcon” Greenwell on groove duty while JJ Johnson took lead until handing it off to Greenwell, which led to both drummers playing off of each other with brilliant melody. The other band members gave the drummers their full, conscious attention during the drum solo, including Trucks, who took a knee center-stage as if to show respect for the most ancient form of musical expression.

Derek & Susan Band by Ray Proetto

The best, and rarest, quality of a good drummer is selflessness. Johnson and Greenwell pull selflessness out of each other creating a huge seamless rhythmic foundation on which the rest of the band rests upon. The end of “Garvey’s Ghost” began a cover of Joe Cocker’s “Space Captain.” which Derek and Susan recorded earlier in the year with Herbie Hancock at their backyard home studio.

The triumphant vocals at the beginning of Delany & Bonnie’s “Coming Home” started the countdown to midnight. Smiles, hugs, and kisses welcomed in the New Year as the band celebrated with Ray Charles’ “Night Time is The Right Time” and Mattison’s song “Bound for Glory”. Aretha Franklin’s “Spirit in The Dark” encored the evening and sent the North Florida faithful strutting into the night.

The band is due to release their first album in June of 2011 and has dates booked in April for Australia and New Zealand.

May the best of last year be the worst of this year.

Jazz Fest Day 1 :: 04.23.10 :: Friday :: New Orleans, LA

Fans at the 41st annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival were greeted with buckets of rain on the first day. Though the numbers were a bit thin and most of them damp, those who did weather the storm were rewarded with spirited performances, no lines for food and plenty of Fest atmosphere. Between noon and 3 p.m. roughly two inches of rain covered the Fairgrounds, but the only set that got canceled was Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band. Everyone else played right on through.

Kayceman’s Top 3

#1 – Lionel Richie

Watching Lionel Richie go from “Dancing On The Ceiling” into an instrumental Van Halen “Jump” tease and back into “Dancing On The Ceiling” was a standout moment of Richie’s Friday Festival closing set. Playing lots of Commodores, talking ’bout Afros and making the cougars purrrrr, this was nothing but fun fun fun.

#2 – Rotary Downs

As the rain finally broke, local rock band Rotary Downs began to play the Lagniappe Stage. Bandleader James Marler commented that drummer Zack Smith “paid the devil $20 to stop the rain” as they tore through a set of propulsive indie rock with pop hooks and psychedelic burns. The rain started to pick up again and Marler asked Smith to put another twenty in the meter before the band dismantled The Beatles’ “Get Back” in glorious fashion.

#3 Maurice Brown Effect

Dashing into the Fairgrounds as the sky opened up, many ducked into the Jazz Tent, where trumpet virtuoso Maurice Brown was holding court. Offering shelter from the storm, Brown’s banging five-piece band (trumpet/sax/drum/piano/upright bass) floated from traditional jazz phrasing into wild excursions full of noise-jazz and trumpets laced with wah-wah effects. At this point, the rain hardly seemed to matter.

Steve Miller Band: First New Studio LP in 15 Years

THE GANGSTER OF LOVE – OR MAURICE TO HIS FRIENDS – RETURNS!

Steve Miller

Roadrunner/Loud & Proud Records has announced a new deal with the Steve Miller Band and Miller’s new imprint Space Cowboy Records. Recorded at film producer George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch, Bingo! (arriving June 15) is the band’s first studio album in 17 years. A true return to Miller’s roots, Bingo! echoes his early years in the Chicago music scene and features carefully chosen and crafted tracks performed in distinctive Steve Miller Band fashion.

“With the continuing evolution of the music industry and all the new exciting opportunities that are available, I feel this is a perfect time to start a new record company and establish new innovative partnerships. I am looking forward to a long relationship with Roadrunner / Loud & Proud” says Miller of the new endeavor.

Early reaction from fans and industry insiders are comparing the album to Miller’s 1968 masterpiece Sailor. Bingo!, will be the first of two albums that were recorded together as a complete body of work, the second of which will be offered next year via the new label partnership.

Bingo! was co-produced by Andy Johns (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen), with artwork designed by the legendary Storm Thorgerson. These recordings feature longtime Steve Miller Band member Norton Buffalo, who sadly passed away in 2009.

Justice delayed

Josef Scheungraber

The trial of a former German infantry commander for Nazi war crimes took 11 months, and ended in what is nowadays a rare conviction.

Josef Scheungraber has been jailed for life after being convicted of the murder of 10 civilians in an Italian village during World War II.

A Munich state court sentenced the 90-year-old German to life imprisonment, after a type of trial that is now quite rare.

The passage of time since the war, and the patchy record of governments in pursuing Nazis and their collaborators, mean that while many Nazis have faced justice and been convicted, far more have slipped through the net.

In the 1950s and 1960s, German judge and prosecutor Fritz Bauer estimated there were 100,000 Germans responsible in one way or another for mass killings of Jews during the war. Other estimates suggested as many as 300,000.

Bauer also said fewer than 5,000 people had been prosecuted, and while there have been many convictions, there has not been a significantly large addition to that number in the years since.

Late efforts

Serge Klarsfeld pursued several Nazis and collaborators after World War II, including Klaus Barbie, Maurice Papon and Paul Touvier. He runs an organisation called Sons and Daughters of Jews Deported from France.

While welcoming Tuesday’s guilty verdict, he expressed doubt over whether Scheungraber would ever actually be jailed.

"This reinforces the message that the passage of time in no way diminishes the crimes of the perpetrator"

Dr Efraim Zuroff, Simon Wiesenthal Center

"It’s good to have such decisions because it helps the families in Italy and it’s a solution to their pain," he said.

"But he will not go to jail, he is too old.

"Today’s tendencies are that we can pursue these people because they are old and they will not go to jail, even if convicted.

"If, decades ago, Nazis had been pursued, they would have been younger and would have had to be sent to jail. Prosecutors do not want to send old men to jail."

Nazi trials

Mr Klarsfeld’s argument appears to be borne out by cases such as that of French Nazi collaborator Maurice Papon.

He was famously convicted of complicity in crimes against humanity for his role in the collaborationist Vichy government, and sentenced to 10 years in a French prison in 1998.

But he served only three, on grounds of ill health, and was released in 2002.

Lithuanian Algimantas Dailide was convicted in 2006, aged 85, of persecuting and arresting two Poles and 12 Jews while a member of the Nazi-backed police in World War II.

But the judge at his trial in Vilnius did not give him a jail term, saying he was too old and "no longer a threat to society".

Dr Efraim Zuroff

Erich Priebke was jailed in Italy for life in 1998, aged in his eighties, for his role in the massacre of 335 Italians in 1944.

But in 1999 he was given leave to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest in his lawyer’s home, on grounds of ill health.

He was also later briefly allowed to work at his lawyer’s offices in Rome, before his work permit was cancelled following furious protests.

Mr Klarsfeld does welcome current attempts by Germany to bring Nazis to justice – the cases of John Demjanjuk and Heinrich Boere are due to be held in Germany within months, for example.

But he says these energies should have been exerted much sooner.

"Germany’s efforts today are something that is positive, but at the same time the same prosecutors should have pursued Nazis 20 or 30 years ago, because now they are only able to go after people who were often nothing more than guards and had little responsibility.

"But their superiors, who had more responsibility, were not pursued and now they are dead."

‘No excuse’

Dr Efraim Zuroff, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which is based in Jerusalem, said he was "very pleased" with Scheungraber’s conviction.

"This reinforces the message that the passage of time in no way diminishes the the crimes of the perpetrator.

"It’s important to bring these people to justice because they are guilty and deserve to be punished," he said.

"Old age is no excuse for murder."

Dr Zuroff also acknowledged that there had been a "recent distinct improvement in the efforts made by the German judiciary, which is better late than never".

"There’s a realisation that we’re in the final phase of bringing Nazis to justice. These trials will not be possible in five or seven years’ time. It’s important that this is done while it can be done."

However, Dr Zuroff still believes there is still enough time for several more alleged Nazis to be put on trial before their age takes them beyond the reach of the courts.

"We will see several additional trials, with more non-Germans such as John Demjanjuk placed on trial.

"We encourage the German judiciary to do as much as they can to bring these people to justice."
