The promise and perils of crowdsourcing content
IT MAY not stir up international outrage like its semi-namesake WikiLeaks, but Wikipedia sparks debate. The free online encyclopedia, which celebrates its tenth birthday on January 15th, is a symbol of unpaid collaboration and one of the most popular destinations on the internet, attracting some 400m visitors a month. It also faces serious charges of elitism.
Wikipedia offers more than 17m articles in 270 languages. Every day thousands of people edit entries or add new ones in return for nothing more than the satisfaction of contributing to the stock of human knowledge. Wikipedia relies on its users’ generosity to fill its coffers as well as its pages. Recent visitors to the website were confronted with images of Jimmy Wales, a co-founder (pictured), and a request for donations. The campaign was annoying but effective, raising $16m in 50 days. …

“Transformers†Star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Nude
So this is the new Megan Fox.In May, Victoria’s Secret stunner Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was tapped to replace Megan’s place in Transformers 3 after Foxy got the boot for being a bit of a bitch and calling director Michael Bay “Hitler.” These days there’s nothing particularly shocking about an actress showcasing her Stanley Steemer for a magazine [...]
Singapore CPI likely stayed high in May, says DBS
Singapore May CPI likely unchanged vs April at +3.2% on year, DBS says, according to Dow Jones.
“A weaker currency in the month has probably invited some extent of imported inflationary pressure. Domestically, the effects of the increase in COE prices as well as the still buoyant property market will probably be manifested in the transport and accommodation costs indices,” says DBS.
Note, USD/SGD ends May at 1.3986 vs 1.3705 at end April amid European debt troubles.
Dow Jones poll tips May CPI +3.1%.

Cheese-powered fuel cells: The whey to greener electricity
Using dairy waste as an alternative source of power
IT MAY seem ridiculous, but in the hunt for sources of alternative energy researchers have come up with fuel cells which are powered by cheese—or at least whey, a by-product in cheese making. Whey is rich in lactose, a sugar which Georgia Antonopoulou, a biochemical engineer at the University of Patras, Greece, says can be consumed by cultures of bacteria contained within a fuel cell to generate an electric current. Microbial fuel cells, as such devices are known, are not a new idea but they are attracting more attention.
The organic content of whey can pose an environmental hazard and many governments now impose strict regulations requiring factories to pay for its treatment before disposal. Whey constitutes about 70% of the volume of the milk used to make cheese. So, just one small feta facility will need to dispose of as much as 4,000 tonnes of whey in a single year, says Dr Antonopoulou. Microbial fuel cells could help, and not just in the cheese-making industry. Breweries, pig farms, food-processing plants and even sewage works could gain from the technology. …
