Mourners targeted in Lahore

LAHORE – At least 35 people were martyred and 254 others injured on Wednesday evening as two suicide bombers exploded themselves minutes after a cracker blast at a mourning procession held in connection with death anniversary of Hazrat Ali (AS) near Karbala Gamay Shah and Bhati Gate. Soon after the incident, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al-Almi claimed the responsibility of carrying out the blasts.
On the other hand, Muslim Sunni Ittehad, Jafferia Alliance and the business community have announced three-day mourning across the country to protest against the heinous act.
The bombers detonated their suicide vests at separate spots as the people had started returning after the main procession entered the premises of Karbala Gamay Shah. The string of blasts occurred in the span of 30 minutes immediately after Iftar. Two women and five children were also among the dead.
Karbala Gamay Shah Imambargah and Bhati Gate are located near Data Darbar, which was recently targeted by suicide attackers, leaving 45 dead and above 200 injured. The death toll could rise as some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition as the report is being filed.
Hundreds of people were busy in offering rituals when two suicide bombers managed to breach the security cordon. “The first attacker, said to be a 19-year-old, exploded his suicide vest in the courtyard of the site amid the procession while the second bomber blew himself up at the main entrance from the backside,” police and eyewitnesses said. Both the explosions were organised and coordinated, investigators added.
Earlier, the rescue teams, Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and law-enforcement agencies rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. According to the BDS officials, suicide bombers caused the blasts and head of one of the bombers was also recovered from the site. They further said ball bearings were used in the suicide jackets.
Rescue 1122 spokesman Faheem Jehanzaib said around 85 injured were shifted to Mayo, 25 to Sir Ganga Ram, 29 to Services and four to the Jinnah hospitals where 18 of them succumbed to wounds while the condition of 35 people, including six policemen, was critical. The Edhi spokesman, however, said 25 people had been killed while more than 185 were severely injured.
DIG (Operations) Rao Sardar Ali Khan told reporters that the first blast took place at a picket when the cops intercepted the bomber for search but he exploded himself, leaving one official dead on the spot. He further said the second blast occurred at another police picket, established among the crowd near a passage. He also endorsed the reports that two blasts were caused by the suicide bombers while third one was a cracker blast, planned to create panic among the mourners.
An eyewitness Sher Ali said, “We were leaving for homes when a suicide bomber exploded his vest around 10 yards away from me.”
“We were trying to inquire about our loved ones after the cracker blast when the suicide blast at Bhati Gate took place from where many of the mourners were passing through,” he added.
Another witness Ali Abbas said the first one was a cracker blast, which created panic among the mourners while the second explosion occurred when they ran away towards Bhati Gate and converged the point. He said another blast was heard near the entrance point of Urdu Bazaar.
Murtaza Hasan, a mourner, said dozens of the mourners were injured in the stampede after the cracker blast. “The procession was about to enter Karbala Gamay Shah when we heard the cracker blast,” he said.
Taqi Shah, an injured eyewitness, said, “The sound of the blast at Bhati Gate was heartbreaking, which was followed by smoke, cries and blood,” he said.
Talking to this scribe informed sources disclosed that India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) was directly involved in the incident. “Besides other neighbouring countries, RAW is involved while the involvement of Israel and could not be ruled out. Reports regarding extra ordinary terror activities in the country, especially in Lahore, had been submitted to the departments concerned,” they added.
They said the network was being operated from Afghanistan as all these agents were being pumped from the neighbouring state.
Similarly, Commissioner Lahore Khusro Pervez also hinted the possibility of the foreign handÂ’s involvement.
Meanwhile, Jafferia Alliance Chief Allama Abbas Kameeli appealed to the Shia and Sunni Muslims to remain peaceful, saying these elements were the enemy of the Muslims; therefore, the nation and the forces had to join their hands and adopt a common strategy against the common enemy. He, however, asked why the government was reluctant in initiating solid steps against the terrorists.
And as the infuriated protesters resorted to violence and attacked the policemen, they escaped from the scene. The angry mob burnt parts of Lower Mall Police Station, situated near the blasts site, besides three vehicles and one motorcycle parked inside the premises. The mob pelted stones at the cops as they ransacked the building and burnt documents and furniture.
At this, police used full force to control the situation, as they fired teargas shells and resorted to aerial firing. The police was reinforced fresh contingent reached the spot after the officials requested the headquarters for reinforcement. But the move resulted in further injuries.
The eyewitnesses said police failed to protect the innocent lives and were now trying to hide the failure by targeting the people. One of them, Haider Shah, asked if the police could not protect the lives of people then they had no right to enjoy such facilities.
The mourners in different majalis across the metropolis condemned the incident and chanted slogans against the police. Demonstrations were also held in different parts of the Walled City.
Meanwhile, Punjab Secretary Home Nadeem Hassan and Capital City Police Chief Mohammad Aslam Tareen called in the Rangers to maintain law and order. The Rangers personnel reached the spot and cordoned of the area. “A massive search operation has been launched in various areas of the City and some suspects have also been apprehended,” a Rangers official said.

India adds to flooding of Punjab

LAHORE – Another flood warning shook Punjab on Saturday in the wake of possible massive deluge as India released over 18,000 cusecs of additional water in River Ravi without prior information to the Pakistani authorities.
Around 170 villages along the river have been evacuated while the local administration is on high alert in Narowal and Sialkot districts to cope with any emergency, official sources said.
“The Pakistani Government should reconsider the decision to accept US $5 million Indian aid offer and have it clarified that whether New Delhi is offering aid for the flood victims or giving compensation for expected flood devastation after releasing water in Ravi,” Ayub Khan Mayo, President Pakistan Muttahida Kissan Mahaz (PMKM), said when contacted.
Official sources further said the flood warning was issued after the news of flood in five nullahs in the catchments areas of River Ravi. “India has released 18,000 cusecs of water in River Ravi that can cause massive floods in Narowal and Shakargarh as there was already 27,000 cusec water flowing in the river,” they added.
Earlier, the Metrological Department predicted that water level in River Ravi would remain low during the next 24 hours but after release of water a low-level flood has hit Bhutsen and Basantar drainages of the river. The Flood Warning Centre in Lahore has given prior high-flood warning in a drainage located at Shakargarh. Flooding is also possible in Basantar, Jhajri, Oojh and Khattar drainages.
A water inflow of 70,000 cusec at Shahdara could cause massive destruction, officials warned.
It is worth mentioning that during the Pak-India parleys held in March and May 2010, India had agreed to install telemetry system on the rivers in its territory to check real-time water flow. But later New Delhi refused to respond to the issues raised by Islamabad.
Pakistan again stressed the need for installing the telemetry system in a bid to get to avoid flood destruction.
When asked about the installation of telemetry system on the rivers in the Indian Occupied Kashmir, G Auranga Nathan during his recent visit to Pakistan said, “They (Pakistan) have pointed out the importance of telemetry system in this world of advanced technology. I have told them that we will discuss their views at all levels and then I will get back to them.”
But India has neither responded on such an important matter nor issued warning before releasing water in River Ravi, which is a sheer violation of the Indus Water Treaty as well.
PakistanÂ’s demand about the telemetry system gained importance due to the fact that after construction of various controversial projects on the western rivers, especially on the Chenab, Islamabad could get real-time information about the water flow.

Jane’s Addiction: Cinco de Mayo Show

DUFF’S FULL SHOW DEBUT

Surrounded by piñatas, sombreros and green, white and red flags in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Jane’s Addiction threw a fiesta on Wednesday at the intimate Bardot in Hollywood, where 150 or so fans and friends squeezed together to experience the very first show by lead singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins with new member, bassist Duff McKagan (Velvet Revolver, Guns N’ Roses).

The band played a seven-song set that marked the debut of a new song, “Soulmate,” mixed in with the staples like “Stop,” “Mountain Song,” “Had a Dad,” “Whores,” “Ain’t No Right” and “Ocean Size.” Cheering the band on were actors Joaquin Phoenix and Danny and Chris Masterson, as well as pro-skater Danny Way, along with musician friends Tom Morello, Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke and Fishbone’s Chris Dowd.

Writing at Rollingstone.com (5/6/10), Steve Appleford said: “Onstage with Jane’s in 2010, McKagan set a thick, watery bassline against Navarro’s speedy solo on ‘Whores’ (from 1987), and it sounded like a collaboration built to last.” Steve Baltin at AOL’s Spinner.com (5/6/10) noted: “Musically, McKagan, who is an old friend of the band and came from the same L.A. scene, slid in to the foursome as smoothly as ‘Soulmate’ made its way into the set last night.” Liam Gowing at Spin.com (5/6/10) added the evening was “Â…a chance to see the alternative rock gods play a room no bigger than a volleyball court” and took note of the “mesmerized crowd.”

Jane’s Addiction is now continuing to write for their next album, tentatively due out in the winter of 2011 on Capitol and to be supported by a worldwide concert tour.

Motion Potion: Electric Nostalgia Tour and Silent Soundclash Series

Motion Potion challenges America’s DJs to a “Silent Soundclash”
Wireless headphones from Silent Events propel a 2-channel Silent Disco battle in U.S. clubs

Motion Potion

For more than a decade, Motion Potion has been pushing “Electric Nostalgia,” a style that unites the past 40 years of dance music with its present and future. This spring he’ll be recruiting a battalion of DJs to help push the concept at “Silent Soundclashes” across America. With the help of hundreds of Silent Events wireless headphones, MoPo will be joined by DJs in 20 different markets for dance-floor excursions that put the choice in the hands of the listener. The Soundclash concept goes back to the earliest days of DJing in Jamaica and New York, where DJs would face off at free outdoor events in “winner takes the soundsystem” battles. “The “Silent Soundclash Series” updates this concept and allows the listener to choose with the flip of a channel switch.

“The Silent Soundclash Series” is a step towards the potential fulfillment of the long-term promise of the “Silent Disco” concept. What started as a way for festivals like Bonnaroo and Glastonberry to run late-night parties is headed towards a day when an urban house party could rock on without waking the neighbors. Using Silent Events’ patented headphones not only allows the best in wireless sound (on their own unique FCC-approved band) but also the ability to switch channels, allowing two DJs to rock a party head-to-head. The partygoer will no longer have to “choose with his feet” by leaving the dance floor but rather just change the station.

“Rocking the “Silent Disco” at Bonnaroo the past four years has been an incredible musical and social experience.” said MoPo “With this tour we’re bringing that amazing vibe right into people’s hometowns and allowing their favorite local DJs to participate in the experiment and join the fun.”

The “Silent Soundclash Series” will take place in the middle of Motion Potion’s Spring 2010 “Electric Nostalgia” Tour, coinciding with the release of a series of three “Electric Nostalgia EP’s” and the launch of the new online community at www.motionpotion.com. The first “Silent Soundclashes” will take place at WMC Miami and will continue on for more than a month across the Eastern United States. MoPo will then head back towards San Francisco to play a series of shows with electronic legends like Tipper, NAPT and Fort Knox 5.

47 killed in City carnage

Ashraf Javed and Khalid Malik
LAHORE – At least 47 people were killed including women and children while more than 150 others sustained multiple wounds when two consecutive bomb blasts ripped through Moon Market, CityÂ’s leading shopping Mall, here Monday night.
The police sources claimed that remote control device was used in the first explosion while second blast was a suicide attack.
Fire, which erupted in the market soon after the power blasts, engulfed more than 40 shops, creating stampede and panic in the entire area, eyewitnesses said.
There were conflicting reports about the death toll.
“At least 4o people including women and children were killed while more than 150 were wounded in the blasts,” Edhi Ambulance sources said.
Director General Rescue Dr Rizwan (1122) Emergency Services said that 36 people were killed and more than 143 were injured in the twin bombings.
SP CIA Omer Virk said that most of the dead were women and young children who were busy in shopping as wedding season is on its peak in the country.
The death toll may rise further as the blast sites of the market are on fire and fire-fighters are tirelessly trying to put out the fire, Rescue workers said.
The police sources believed that the one of the bombs was planted and remote control device was used in the explosion. However, investigations were underway to determine the nature of the blasts.
Over a dozen vehicles also caught fire and were badly damaged as the powerful blasts shattered the windowpanes of several other vehicles and buildings in the area.
“People started running toward backside of the market following the first blast, which took place at the centre market. About 30 seconds later, the second blast occurred on the backside of the shopping Mall,” Shabbair Khan, an eyewitness said. The two sites targeted were about 30 meters apart. One on the edge of the market and the other at its centre.
“Apparently it seemed that the blast took place inside the market was planted while the second was suicide blast,” SP Iqbal Town Ali Nasir Rizvi said.
Fire engulfed more than 40 shops in the commercial market while there was complete power breakdown in the entire locality soon after the blasts, police sources at the Iqbal Town police station said.
“I saw rescue workers were collecting body parts of the dead as the blast was very powerful,” Imran Ali, a shopper said.
The bodies and injured were ferried in 1122 ambulances to nearby hospitals as the government declared emergency in all the public hospitals.
The bomb blasts took place at about 9:42pm in a short succession inside the Moon Market, the most congested and popular shopping Mall Monday night. There was a great rush of shoppers including women and children when the blasts hit the market, one after the other, shopkeeper said. “At least 30 people have been shifted to the Sheikh Zayed Hospital with multiple wounds,” hospital sources said.
There were intelligence reports about terrorist attacks in the City, as the police were put on high alert around the key government installations but the terrorist targeted public place- a soft target, police sources revealed.
“Women and children were busy in shopping while a good number of people were taking meal at the restaurants situated near the market when bomb blasts took place,” Ahmed Khan an eyewitness said.
A lack of command was witnessed during the rescue operation as the police, rescue workers, and security agencies were doing their job at their own. Some local political leaders visited the sites and later went back.
The first blast took place inside Top-in market adjacent to the Moon market while the second blast occurred on the backside of a leading commercial bank.
“Innocent people have been targeted in the blasts. More than 60 injured have been shifted to Sheikh Zayed, Jinnah, Services, Ganga Ram, and Mayo hospital,” Commissioner Lahore Khusro Pervaiz told reporters at the blast sites.
The power failure and huge rush of people at the blast sites hindered rescue operations as ambulances and rescue workers reached the spot to launch rescue operations.
Heavy police contingents, ambulances and rescue workers reached the spot soon after the blasts. Rescue operation is underway as dozens of shops have caught fire, an eyewitness said, adding, the blasts led to stampede and terror in the congested market.
The police and security agencies officials reached the spot and cordoned off the entire area. Further investigations were underway till filing of this report.
A great number of people also reached the hospitals to donate blood for the injured as a state of emergency was declared in the public hospitals of the City.
Many emotional scenes were also witnessed outside the public hospitals as the family members of the victims arrived in panic.
“I saw people were searching their loved ones madly at the blast sites,” Muhammad Azhar a restaurant waiter told reporters at the crime scene.
Shopkeepers closed down their shops and started rescue operation.
Muhammad Latif Tahir, a 7th grade student at a local school contacted TheNation by phone late on Monday night and said that he was worried about his future and the government should close down schools under the prevailing situation. “What is happening around us? How terrible. Please,,, please,,, stop this,” he commented.
Moon market is a commercial centre in Iqbal Town in Lahore, where shopping reaches at its peak during night hours.
APP adds: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani have strongly condemned the twin blasts at a market place in Lahore. They expressed deep grief over the killing of innocent people and prayed for the early recovery of injured.
Both the President and the Prime Minister said that such cowardly acts of terrorism could not deter the government to fight this menace in the country.
They directed the authorities concerned to investigate the matter and provide best possible medical treatment to the injured.

‘Dirty war’ general found guilty

Argentine former general Santiago Omar Riveros (l) - 2001 file photo

A former general who headed a notorious detention centre during Argentina’s military rule has been sentenced to life in prison for human rights abuses.

Santiago Omar Riveros, 86, commanded the Campo de Mayo military barracks on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

He was found guilty of involvement in the 1976 murder of 15-year-old communist youth member, Floreal Avellaneda, who was tortured to death.

Some 30,000 people disappeared or died in Argentina’s 1976-1983 "Dirty War".

Riveros’s former intelligence chief, Fernando Verplaetsen, was also jailed for 25 years in connection with the boy’s killing.

And four other officers were given jail terms of between eight and 18 years.

Torture tactics

Floreal Avellaneda and his mother were abducted in 1976 by a military squad and tortured to find out the whereabouts of the boy’s father, a Communist Party union leader of the same name.

The mother, Iris Pereyra, described their ordeal to the court: "They applied an electric current to my armpits, breasts, mouth, genitals and did exactly the same to my son."

Mrs Pereyra was released after three years. But her son’s body washed up on the Uruguayan coast, bound hand and foot, and showing signs of beating, the prosecutors said.

Riveros was first convicted in 1985, and pardoned in 1989 by then-President Carlos Menem. In 2007, Argentina’s Supreme Court revoked the pardon, clearing the way for his re-trial.

He is accused of more than 40 crimes against humanity involving victims of the era’s so called "disappeared".

An estimated 5,000 prisoners were held at the Campo de Mayo barracks, one of the largest extermination centres in operation during the dictatorship of a military junta headed by General Leopoldo Galtieri, according to human rights groups.
