The String Cheese Incident by Brian Spady

It had been over a year since String Cheese Incident last assembled on a stage together. Each time they take a break these days it puts a lingering question mark in their fans’ minds but cheekily opening their 3-night Red Rocks run with a tune entitled “Can’t Stop Now” announced that there’s more to this story yet to be told. An encore opening night of “Brand New Start” further fueled the notion that SCI is entering a new phase, rejuvenated and excited by their many outside projects, and surely happy to see the smiling, gently undulating multitudes covering the hillside in front of them.

For whatever else one can say about an “Incident,” there’s no missing the warmth, camaraderie, and in-the-moment engagement of the folks on and off the stage. And the vibe had to be positively tactile revisiting fan faves like “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” “Rollover” and “Ms Brown’s Teahouse,” not to mention SCI takes on Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son,” Dylan’s “The Mighty Quinn” and Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.”

What follows is a glimpse into the fun and fine music that transpired in the Rockies this past weekend as folks await the next big String Cheese run at Horning’s Hideout, July 30-August 1. (Dennis Cook)

Philanthropy: Keeping up with the Gateses

The world’s leading philanthropists ask other tycoons to join their movement

ONE of the unlikeliest books of last year was “Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us!”, a fictional account by Ralph Nader, a veteran left-wing campaigner, of a movement of billionaires led by Warren Buffett and featuring, among others, Ted Turner, George Soros and Barry Diller, who use their fortunes to clean up America. This was not, as you might suppose, a satire but what Mr Nader called “an exercise in practical Utopianism”. He even met Mr Buffett to urge him to take up the challenge.

Perhaps the Sage of Omaha, as Mr Buffett is known, was listening. On June 16th, with Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, he launched a campaign to persuade America’s billionaires to give away much of their fortunes. They are invited to take the “giving pledge” by writing a public letter promising to donate 50% or more of their wealth. Mr Buffett himself has written the first, which is published on a website, givingpledge.org. He says he will ultimately give away 99% of his wealth, most of which he has already pledged to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Although the letters will not be legally binding, they are intended to create a moral obligation which will be reinforced by peer pressure from others who take the pledge—a bit like members of Alcoholics Anonymous who promise to stay off the booze. …

Anastasio and Classic TAB Tour

ANASTASIO AND CLASSIC TAB ANNOUNCE 2010 TOUR DATES

Trey Anastasio

Trey Anastasio has had an incredible 2009 with Phish, which toured for the first time in over four years and closed out the year with four consecutive shows at Miami’s American Airlines Arena last week (see the review of Miami NYE here). Now the singer/guitarist is preparing to hit the road with Trey Anastasio Band, which has backed him on many of his solo projects.

An online ticket request period begins tomorrow, January 6, at 10:00 a.m. EST here. Tickets will go on sale to the general public next week.

The tour kicks off with a special benefit show at the Jefferson Theatre in Charlottesville, VA on February 8. The date marks what would have been the 47th birthday of Trey’s sister, Kristine Anastasio, an esteemed environmentalist and author who died of neuroendocrine cancer last April. Proceeds from the show will go to the Kristine Anastasio Manning Memorial Fund, which supports many of the causes and charities she devoted herself to.

Hitting several cities that Anastasio has never played before, the dates are the first for Classic TAB since they went out as a quartet last fall. Now they’re adding horns back into the mix with Russell Remington (tenor saxophone and flute) and Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet and vocals), who will once again join Russ Lawton (drums), Tony Markellis (bass) and Ray Paczkowski (keyboards). New to the group is Natalie Cressman on trombone and vocals, who replaces her father, Jeff Cressman.

The septet will perform material that spans Anastasio’s solo career, including “Push On ‘Til The Day” (from 2000′s Trey Anastasio), “Sweet Dreams Melinda” and “Sleep Again” (from Shine, 2005), “Goodbye Head” (Bar 17, 2006) and “Olivia” and “Burlap Sack & Pumps” (The Horseshoe Curve, 2007). They’re currently in rehearsals, adapting the arrangements to suit the current configuration and working on several brand new compositions. Classic TAB has always functioned as breeding ground of sorts, with many of its songs eventually crossing over into Phish’s repertoire.
