JamBase Questionnaire: The Steepwater Band

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Brian Haas.

The Steepwater Band by Daniel Bartel

Listening to Live At The Double Door (released October 19 on Diamond Day) it’s hard to fathom how Chicago’s The Steepwater Band isn’t a longtime staple on the festival and theatre circuit. Lean, menacing toughness infuses a mixture of electric blues, country flavors and gloriously faded denim classic rock, all delivered in a way that seizes one rather than wait for the listener to tiptoe in.

Anyone who’s ever swooned over North Mississippi Allstars, The Black Crowes, Buddy Guy, Hound Dog Taylor, Savoy Brown and other similar certified greats will feel their blood bubble happily as snarling opener “Indiana Line” leads into killer after killer captured at Chi-town’s finest lil’ juke joint, the Double Door, in a single night this past May. You can practically smell the sweat pouring down the walls as TSB drag blues rock back to the same craggy, longhaired territory where early Zeppelin had their way with it. However, unlike a lot of blues based outfits, the songwriting here is thoughtful and sharp enough to draw blood and the arrangements pop and swing with prizefighting intensity. Crank Live At The Double Door up LOUD and this shit will crawl right into the meat of you, and you won’t be sorry for the reminder of your basic incarnation and carnality – real music that stirs lizard brain level satisfaction while offering a tickle to the superego.

This live set follows a 12 year run for Jeff Massey (vocals, guitar), Tod Bowers (bass) and Joe Winters (drums) that’s only seen the band grow stronger every year, tightening and toning their music to produce a sound that’s utterly full yet utterly uncluttered. While it’s a treat to finally have a concert document that does the trio justice, there’s also a string of excellent studio work behind them. The latest single (which also features a bang-up cover of Tom Petty’s “Honey Bee”) is “The Stars Look Good Tonight,” a skipping corker that’s found some inroads on AOR radio, and it’s preceded by 2008′s Marc Ford produced Grace And Melody (JamBase review), where the maturity of TSB’s tunes and playing marked the full arrival of a great contemporary rock band whose roots proudly show but whose style echoes the blessed, befuzzed pounding of The Who and The Small Faces in their youthful prime. (Dennis Cook)

The Steepwater Band play tonight, December 10, at The Voodoo Lounge in Burbank, IL and next Thursday, December 16, at RIBCO in Rock Island, IL. TSB will also open for Robert Randolph & The Family Band and North Mississippi Allstars on New Year’s Eve at the House of Blues in Chicago.

Here’s what the Steepwater guys had to say to our inquiries.

Jeff Massey

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Tod Bowers: Mistakes

Joe Winters: A groove

Jeff Massey: Inspiration and Southern Comfort

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
Tod Bowers: Thriller (if I don’t count Star Wars soundtracks)

Joe Winters: Motely Crue’s Theatre of Pain

Jeff Massey: Led Zeppelin IV

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
Tod Bowers: The Black Keys’ Brothers

Joe Winters: Fistful of Mercy

Jeff Massey: Neil Young’s Le Noise. Just Neil and some angry fuzzed out guitar.

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
Tod Bowers: Football player

Joe Winters: A professional baseball player

Jeff Massey: Very tall

Tod Bowers

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
Tod Bowers: Loud

Joe Winters: A medium size, roots-y rock and roll joint

Jeff Massey: One outside with 70-degree temperatures, a kickin’ sound system and a mob of crazy rock fans!

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
Tod Bowers: I can make a mean batch of turkey tacos.

Joe Winters: I realize every day that love is the most important thing in the world.

Jeff Massey: I make some mean steamed salmon.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Tod Bowers: My tubes turning on and getting all toasty warm.

Joe Winters: Opening the first can of Diet Coke of the morning.

Jeff Massey: Semi-trucks passing by on the expressway. Ya know, the sound George Lucas used for the tie-fighters in the original Star Wars movie.

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Tod Bowers: The Faces’ A Nod Is as Good as a WinkÂ…to a Blind Horse

Joe Winters: Muddy Waters’ Hard Again

Jeff Massey: Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti

Joe Winters

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Tod Bowers: Rib-eye steak dinner at the Dinosaur BBQ

Joe Winters: In Switzerland. Our tour manager’s parents made dinner for the band on a raclette grill. It was fantastic.

Jeff Massey: The giant hot dogs provided by Bon Jovi’s personal chef when we opened for them.

10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
Tod Bowers: Â…toxicated. Kidding, kind of. Actually, Spain has the coolest non-pretentious rock fans in the world, and they’re excited and full of energy.

Joe Winters: Spain

Jeff Massey: Spain. They have too much fun to be pretentious. They do not fear the act of applause.

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Tod Bowers: Playing bass in a rock ‘n’ roll band.

Joe Winters: Having to ride “shotgun” all the time in the vehicle.

Jeff Massey: A heavy addiction to spicy Cheez-It’s.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
Tod Bowers: Depends on the day, but usually the Stones.

Joe Winters: Stones, because of Charlie Watts. Enough said.

Jeff Massey: The Stones…because the Stones wrote “Can’t Ya Hear Me Knocking.”

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
Tod Bowers: It’s a long story but it involves a brightly lit room, a guitar icon and giant bolts. It’s not Marc.

Joe Winters: Spending four hours backstage with Eddie Van Halen in Detroit, MI in 2007. Not enough room here to even scratch the surface.

Jeff Massey: Eddie Van Halen doing pushups in front of me and then throwing his guitar across the room to prove its durability.

Ray LaMontagne: Like Rock & Roll And Radio

By: Dennis Cook

Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs

It’s always heartening when an artist opens an album with something that feels new, even as it gives us that hit of the familiar. God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise (released August 17 on RCA), the fourth long-player from Ray LaMontagne, begins with “Repo Man,” a bumptious rocker with tangible groove & growl. This is not the teary-eyed, sensitive singer-songwriter that’s sadly become LaMontagne’s soundbite, but it is part of a complex artist who keeps moving past preconceptions with each successive release.

“It’s funny how the initial round of press has such staying power. It’s maddening for me,” observes LaMontagne. “This whole impression that I’m introverted to level of autism is so completely untrue. Writers will come to shows and build on that constantly. It’s very frustrating. I guess if you’re not swinging a guitar over your back and pointing & smiling at people in the audience, then somehow you don’t want to be there. That’s just not the case. I immerse myself in the music and the musicians I’m playing with. Obviously, if I didn’t want to be doing this I wouldn’t. I love making records and playing live, and I feel really lucky to be able to do both. But those early impressions sure stick around.”

For the first time on an album, LaMontagne shares top billing with his band, a stunning, critic sanctioned ensemble which includes top-gun guitar/stringed-things players Eric Heywood and Greg Leisz, as well as touring keyboardist Patrick Warren, an under-sung ace who’s worked with Michael Penn & Aimee Mann for years. The name of LaMontagne’s band, The Pariah Dogs, conveys a lot in a few words – a sense of foreboding, perhaps something apocalyptic – and finds its origins in India, where it refers to packs of feral hounds. “I just liked the sound of it,” says LaMontagne. “It rolls off the tongue.”

The core of the band has played together for years, but very rarely all together at once. The rhythm section of Jay Bellerose (drums) and Jennifer Condos (bass) have been with LaMontagne off & on since his second album, Till The Sun Turns Black.

“We’re all really close as friends but also I think we just communicate really well,” offers LaMontagne. “They’re all so great just as human beings, and as musicians they all have such unique voices. No one plays like Greg and the same goes for Jen and Jay. They all have such beautiful, individual voices. For people that really listen, these guys are insane. It’s a dream for me to play with these guys and get them on the record.”

LaMontagne’s music lends itself to this sort of empathetic, aware musicianship, where the subtlety of various components matters, small, intelligent choices adding the necessary texture and wow to his carefully honed compositions and thoughtful vocal style. And the shared intuition of this group also filters into their renditions of LaMontagne’s earlier catalog, which continues to evolve in their care as they’ve toured worldwide this year.

New Album

“I kind of live it and breath it, so I can’t really see the changes. It just happens naturally. I don’t consciously think about it. We just play the songs,” says LaMontagne. “Dylan, I guess, is kind of a grotesque extreme to this idea [of song evolution]. If you see him now, the melodies to the early songs have just sort of disappeared. It’s really bizarre. That’s just drastic and not enjoyable for the listener. You have to remember there’s a listener on the other side, and they want to hear something familiar, a melody that’s familiar. As a vocalist, I want it to be fresh for myself. I try to approach it and sing it effectively every night. You don’t want to change it up so much that people don’t recognize it or enjoy it anymore.”

Melody is central to LaMontagne’s work, something evident in the more meditative pieces on God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise. His songs linger, even the sad ones, because they provide a tuneful companion. Where some songs bum-rush one, LaMontagne’s saunter in and take a seat nearby and wait for us to join them.

“That’s what I love about songs, and I’m always trying to get better at it. I’m always trying to open myself up more when a song comes knocking, to be patient with it and allow the melody to reveal itself. And even in the revision process, I strive to be open to hearing what it wants to be,” says LaMontagne. “Songs reveal themselves to you. You can’t sit down and make a song happen. If you do that, the song is going to suck.”

“I have good instincts about, well, everything, I think, just in life. I’m not saying that in an egotistical way. I’ve just found that to be the case in my life,” says LaMontagne, whose music requires listeners to focus and open up if they’re to fully experience it. Sure, his music could be background noise at a Starbuck’s but that’s not why it was created. “I’m proud of that. That’s what I love about music. That’s what the albums that mean the most to me, and most great albums, are about – listening. You’ve got to spend time with them and get to know them if you want to hear the nuances.”

Ray LaMontagne by Adam McCullough

“To take my own stuff, on my new record there’s a song called ‘New York City’s Killing Me,’ and you can hear Eric working out his part. He did it so quick, and the whole record was done so quickly. What you’re hearing are really instantaneous responses to the material, which the band hadn’t heard prior to the sessions. We recorded it in five days, which meant two tracks per day,” says LaMontagne. “It made me realize just how amazing these guys are. I always knew they were incredible but then when I listened to the album, knowing they’d just heard these songs, maybe in the car about an hour and a half before the take, it’s pretty astounding. By the last chorus of ‘New York City’s Killing Me,’ he gets a little melodic hook he plays on pedal steel. If there were a quote/unquote producer in the room besides me, they would have undoubtedly made us do it again and had Eric play that hook throughout the song. What I love about it is how you can hear him finding that hook.”

Moments like this – which can’t be premeditated but are happily captured for perpetuity – are often the cores of great albums. Happenstance and lightning inspiration should never be discounted, something LaMontagne understands full well.

“For the near future at least, it’s how I plan to make albums,” says LaMontagne. “The control freak in me likes to be in control [laughs]. I certainly wouldn’t rule out working with a producer, but it would have to be an inspired thing. I’d have to go in feeling it was gonna work. Like I said, I have good instincts and I trust myself. Right now, [self-producing my latest album] was an important step for me, to make a record in my own space. I don’t really have a studio. I just have a big, beautiful room that’s just amazing. And Ryan Freeland (Aimee Mann, Crowded House, Son Volt) brought his remote gear in and expertly engineered the sessions. He’s got this great rig with all these tube amps. All he’d seen was some photographs of the space and he just rolled in and made it look really effortless. He was set up in a few hours and immediately started getting beautiful sounds.”

In many respects, God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise is Ray LaMontagne’s most unforced song cycle. This is simply the next chapter in the story of a serious singer, songwriter and musician smart enough to surround himself with the best players around and then let nature take its course. While the gentle sway of “Are We Really Through” and “For The Summer” will appeal to fans still hoping he’ll remake Trouble one day, but more open-minded ears will find a good deal of bounce in cuts like “Like Rock & Roll And Radio” and “Devil’s In The Jukebox.” LaMontagne’s empathy for his fellow humans remains strong, but it’s now joined by a sly caustic edge that’s terrific and just as human as all the sighs and handholding that’s made him so beloved. In short, today’s Ray LaMontagne is more well rounded than ever and the music’s nothing but better for it.

String Cheese Incident | Red Rocks, CO | Photos

The String Cheese Incident by Brian Spady

It had been over a year since String Cheese Incident last assembled on a stage together. Each time they take a break these days it puts a lingering question mark in their fans’ minds but cheekily opening their 3-night Red Rocks run with a tune entitled “Can’t Stop Now” announced that there’s more to this story yet to be told. An encore opening night of “Brand New Start” further fueled the notion that SCI is entering a new phase, rejuvenated and excited by their many outside projects, and surely happy to see the smiling, gently undulating multitudes covering the hillside in front of them.

For whatever else one can say about an “Incident,” there’s no missing the warmth, camaraderie, and in-the-moment engagement of the folks on and off the stage. And the vibe had to be positively tactile revisiting fan faves like “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” “Rollover” and “Ms Brown’s Teahouse,” not to mention SCI takes on Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son,” Dylan’s “The Mighty Quinn” and Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.”

What follows is a glimpse into the fun and fine music that transpired in the Rockies this past weekend as folks await the next big String Cheese run at Horning’s Hideout, July 30-August 1. (Dennis Cook)

Legendary Shack Shakers Announce New Album and Supporting Tour, Give Away New Track

Legendary Shack Shakers

Legendary Shack Shakers will release Agridustrial on April 13 on their own Colonel Knowledge label.

Agridustrial was produced by LSS bassist Mark Robertson and is the band’s seventh full-length album. Front man J.D. Wilkes explains, “It’s the hard driving roots rock of the Shack Shakers’ sound with the industrial background of guitarist Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard, Tomahawk)”.

The Agridustrial sound mirrors the harsh realities of our present day recession and is the statement of an American band fighting back against a society gone mad with greed and the usurpation of basic human dignities. There are songs that praise Jesus, “Sin Eater”, and southern-fried provocateurs, “Dixie Iron Fist”. “Hoboes Are My Heroes” is borne from Wilkes’ recent experience of riding the rails. Even the sound of Agridustrial is a direct response to the present day recession, with the band even going to a blacksmith forge to record the sounds of hammers, anvils, tongs, cranks and chains for much of the percussion on the album.

The Legendary Shack Shakers are J.D. Wilkes (vocals), Duane Denison (guitar), Mark Robertson (bass) and Brett Whitacre on drums.

The band will kick off promotion of the new album at SXSW and a full tour will be announced soon.

“Sin Eater” is available for download here.

Agridustrial track listing:
1. Melungeon Melody
2. Sin Eater
3. Sugar Baby
4. Nightride
5. Dixie Iron Fist
6. Two Tickets To Hell
7. God Fearing People
8. Greasy Creek

The Steepwater Band: European Tour w/ Marc Ford

BEN HARPER/BLACK CROWES VET HITS ROAD WITH CHICAGO ROCK POWERHOUSE

Marc Ford

In late winter 2010, the Chicago-based trio The Steepwater Band hops over the pond for six-week European Tour – a first in the history of the band. It kicks off with a bang as Marc Ford joins The Steepwater Band on the Spanish leg of the tour. Ford’s work with The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, and Booker T has made him one of the most celebrated guitarists of his generation.

Recently, The Steepwater Band commissioned Ford to produce their latest release, Grace and Melody (JamBase review). The flow of mutual admiration and respect during that studio session created a bond between the musicians and talk of a collaborative tour was on the horizon. The ten-city tour begins in Bilbao and stretches across Spain’s beautiful landscape to Madrid, Gijon and Barcelona, just to name a few. Each show will feature a TSB set to get the evening rolling. After the opening sets, Ford will join the band. Together they will perform songs from his solo releases as well as songs from the Steepwater catalog. These evenings of music are bound to astonish and inspire fans.

For the folks in the United States who cannot make the Spain shows, you are in luck. The Steepwater Band & Marc Ford will be playing two Midwest shows to kick-off the tour before flying over to España. The House of Blues’ funky Back Porch Stage will be the site in TSB’s hometown of Chicago on Saturday, February 20. Grab your tickets now, as this show is bound to sell-out. On Sunday, February 21, TSB & Marc will travel north to Wisconsin for an intimate show at the fabulous Green Room in Sheboygan. Tickets for this show on sale via the Green Room’s website.

After Steepwater & Ford rip through Spain, TSB continues on their own to debut in many cities across Europe. This month long trip will see them playing from London to Prague and many other historical places. Some markets/venues are currently pending, be sure to check www.steepwater.com in the coming weeks for a full schedule.

Monday Melody

FOLK MUSIC OF THE PUREST AND FINEST SORT

Dougie MacLean

Mondays frequently begin with a lingering malaise, the aftermath of weekends gone well (or poorly) or the general urgency of a new week encroaching quicker than one might like. If there a zillion cliches about this day, they surely find their roots in lived-in truths many of us experience. Well, few things shake off that malaise better than a sweet song or three delivered with earnest conviction, something simple yet striking down to things deep. And few offer up better music of this sort than Scotland’s Dougie MacLean. We present two classics and a recent tune from MacLean’s expansive catalog to help ease you into a new week a touch more gently. Even if you’ve never been to Caledonia there’s something universally touching in Dougie’s wistful reverie.

Dirty Projectors from last.fm

Dirty Projectors‘ critically acclaimed 2009 release Bitte Orca has won them a diverse fan base, including the likes of former Talking Heads frontman and current bicyclist extraordinaire David Byrne. They even wowed ?uestlove and The Roots backstage before their October 28 appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Singer-songwriter Dave Longstreth has surrounded himself with some considerable talent, including mustachioed bassist Nat Baldwin, drummer Brian Mcomber, and a triumvirate of incredible (and cute!) female singers who each had their share of the spotlight. It’s fair to say that while the Projectors all play off each other seamlessly, there is no argument as to who is the leader. “It is Dave’s group,” explains Angel Deradoorian (guitar, bass, keyboard, samples) in a recent JamBase interview. “It’s been his project for a long time.” His leadership was evident throughout the evening, as he was the only member of the group that remained onstage for the entire show. He deftly directed traffic with his left handed finger-picking, at times melodically emphasizing the downbeat while Mcomber forged on.

After a rousing set by opening band The Givers, Dirty Projectors began shyly with Orca track “No Intentions.” Swirling guitar riffs met a basic drumbeat and subtly hinted at what would transpire over the next 90 minutes. The second tune, “Remade Horizon,” sounded at times like Battles‘ hectic “Race:In” and showcased for the first time the astoundingly complex vocal interplay of Deradoorian, Amber Coffman, and Haley Dekle.

Longstreth spoke about the Projectors’ emphasis on vocals in a July 2009 interview with Pitchfork.com: “What we want to do is to make music that feels good, and feels expressive – even as it does so in a new vocabulary.”

This new vocabulary was evident in the band’s diversity of sound; highlighted by the use of a thirteenth century technique called hocketing overlayed guitar lines that could have been borrowed from West Africa’s kora tradition. Yet abruptly, the instrumental “Ascending Melody” dropped into some serious funk. The jam band fan in me wanted the group to extend this one, but they kept the song under five minutes.

Dirty Projectors by Greg Neate

Never was the group’s diverse sound more evident than in the middle of the set, where re-imagined Black Flag tracks “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie” and “Police Story” were sandwiched between acoustic beauties “Two Doves” and “The Bride.” The Rise Above songs were self-indulgent and nihilistic, while the two Orca tunes evoked romantic images by sounding ethereal and peaceful. “Doves” was simply gorgeous; Longstreth provided the muse by softly strumming an old classical guitar. Despite some unwanted microphone feedback (to which Longstreth chuckled at mid-song as if to say, “Really? On this song?”), Deradoorian’s voice did truly sound angelic. Before her solo, she triumphantly pumped her fist and proclaimed, “We finally get to play upstairs!”

Baldwin added an upright bass for “The Bride,” which wasn’t his only moment to shine. Manning his electric for the electro-indie pop sensation “Stillness is the Move,” Baldwin mimicked a lead guitar to give the song a bouncy feel that should have made the crowd move a little more than it actually did. Show closer “Useful Chamber” was raw and explosive. At times, the mish-mash of polyrhythms, odd tempos, dropped beats, and Longstreth’s obsession with dissonance gave the group a chaotic sound, as if they were teetering on the edge of a sonic cliff. They never did fall off, always pulling together masterfully at the perfect moment, leaving everyone in the room with an understanding smile (think of the breakdown in Flecktones live staple “Stomping Grounds”).

Admittedly, Longstreth’s crooning was occasionally abrasive, however, it was difficult not to admire the group’s effort and passion. It was clear that not only do they love what they do but they are damn good at it, too. Following a stellar encore that included their Byrne collaboration “Knotty Pine,” there was no question that Dirty Projectors are as tight and unique a band as any currently touring.

Jerry Garcia Band: Let It Rock

JERRY GARCIA BAND WILL LET IT ROCK

Double-Disc Collection Includes Rare Early Performances Of The Group’s Original Lineup
Featuring Legendary Pianist Nicky Hopkins, Recorded Live In Berkeley, November 1975

For Jerry Garcia, 1975 was a seminal year that found him splitting time between recording Blues for Allah with the Dead, directing The Grateful Dead Movie, and forming the Jerry Garcia Band – his long-running side project. JGB’s earliest days are the subject of a two-disc live collection recorded during that momentous year. THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 2: LET IT ROCK, JERRY GARCIA BAND, NOVEMBER 17 & 18, 1975, KEYSTONE BERKELEY will be available November 10 from Jerry Garcia Family/Rhino at physical retail outlets and at www.dead.net for a suggested list price of $19.98.

The Jerry Garcia Band – Garcia, his constant collaborator bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt – played its first show with Nicky Hopkins on piano in August 1975. The ultimate session player, Hopkins’ credits include work with The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Jefferson Airplane to name a very few. While Hopkins residency was brief with the Jerry Garcia Band, it played an important role in the group’s shift away from big jams toward song-oriented material.

In addition to being a brilliant songwriter himself, Garcia had a great ear for other people’s songs and the new band provided him an opportunity to explore others’ works. LET IT ROCK includes covers of Chuck Berry (“Let It Rock”), Little Milton (“That’s What Love Will Make You Do”) and Jimmy Cliff (“Sitting In Limbo”). It also features performances of Allen Toussaint’s “I’ll Take A Melody” and Hank Ballard’s “Tore Up Over You,” songs that would surface a few months later on Garcia’s Reflections (1976). In addition to other artists’ songs, the band dips briefly into the Dead canon for “Friend Of The Devil” and Garcia’s 1972 solo debut for “Sugaree.” Three Hopkins originals are featured as well, “Pig’s Boogie,” “Lady Sleeps,” and the curiously titled “Edward, The Mad Shirt Grinder,” a song Hopkins first performed with Quicksilver Messenger Service.

While it is not strictly speaking a complete show, THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 2 is sequenced to approximate a two-set club gig, highlighting performances recorded November 17 and 18, 1975, during a pair of intimate gigs at Keystone Berkeley in front of a hometown crowd. The shows demonstrate that this lineup was capable of collective improvisation on the same level as the Grateful Dead, says David Gans, host of the Grateful Dead Hour. “Everybody could play melody or rhythm, or both, at any time, flying in and out of formation and always in intimate relation to what the others were playing,” he writes in the collection’s liner notes.

MJ was “never satisfied” with his music: Akon

Late King of Pop Michael Jackson was ””never satisfied”” with his music, singer-and-producer Akon has revealed.
Akon said: “He was never satisfied. Like, we might have passed up ideas that I know for a fact were smashes. He”d be like, ”Nah, nah – we got to come up with something better.”

Tues Double Shot: Steepwater

THESE GUYS SOUND REAL GOOD REAL LOUD!

The Steepwater Band

In the tradition ’70s FM radio, JamBase’s new Tuesday tradition offers readers a pair of fab tunes from an artist worthy of the Double Shot treatment.

While we’ve mostly gone with established, beloved classics in this segment, this week we turn it over to an emerging hard blues rock gem, The Steepwater Band. This Illinois-based power trio are rough ‘n’ ready rock, and here’s a couple examples of them at their tough nosed best. If classic rock radio wasn’t so hung up on name brands they’d realize they have a fine new addition that can hold their own with the endless repeats of The Who, Cream, Zep, etc.

The Steepwater Band’s latest release is Grace And Melody (2008), which was produced by former Black Crowes guitar marvel Marc Ford. Check out the JamBase review of this killer here.

Monday Melody: Marillion

THE OPEN ROAD IS INFINITELY HOPEFUL

Marillion

Much of the best advice is simple and practical. We modern folks tend to thrive on complication but it’s hard to improve on a hammer. And frequently the music that most informs our days, that most frequently scores our slow pilgrim’s progress, tends to get right down to the nitty gritty. In a week where many of us will be traveling long miles towards say Indio, California or Yosemite or New York City to celebrate another Halloween amongst likeminded revelers, it seemed appropriate to offer some pragmatic road music to kick off the week.

Marillion‘s recent output is chock full of good advice, including the simple encouragement to “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and the quiet reminder that while destinations are swell “Happiness Is The Road.” Safe travels and a strong wind at your back wished for all the musical travelers this week!
