Digable Planets Presents: Butterfly and Doodlebug
Featuring the Cosmic Funk Orchestra (CFO) Band
Butterfly and Doodlebug |
Butterfly and Doodlebug, of the Grammy awarding-winning group the Digable Planets, are hitting the road again.
In an age of auto-tone hip hop, the men of Digable Planets are working to return the genre to its roots and bring back meaningful, substance-driven lyrics over timeless beats. Following a successful Fall 2008 tour, Butterfly and Doodlebug will continue bringing their jazz, blues and society influenced classics back to the stage for faithful fans and new hip hop enthusiasts alike.
The Fall 2009 tour marks the first time the duo have performed Digable Planets songs with a live three-piece band since 2005. In addition to Digable classics, the tour will also showcase material for both artists’ recent solo releases: Butterfly’s Shabazz Palaces and Doodlebug’s and the CFO’s Intifadah.
Sample songs for this tour can be heard here.

Members of Mars Volta: Tour in Two Bands this Nov
Members of The Mars Volta Tour Together in
Zechs Marquise and Free Moral Agents This November
Considering how The Mars Volta‘s songs are so complexly intertwined, it would only make sense that the band’s ever-expanding family of related projects are bound together as well. In November, two such groups, Zechs Marquise and Free Moral Agents take to the road to show us how this brood continues to grow.
Zechs Marquise features multi-instrumentalist Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez (who also plays in The Mars Volta) and bassist Marfred Rodriguez-Lopez, both siblings to legendary guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Free Moral Agents is a collective of musicians founded by The Mars Volta’s Grammy Award-winning keyboardist Isaiah “Ikey” Owens. A new promotional video has been released courtesy of Rodriguez Lopez Productions:
While sharing The Mars Volta’s penchant for expansive passages, Zechs Marquise takes a hazier, psych-laden approach to its songs, as evident on its 15-track debut album Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare which was released in Fall 2009 via Rodriguez Lopez Productions (listen to: “Chase Scene” and “Sirenum Scopuli”). Stream the entire album HERE.

Mr. Green All-Stars feat. DKs, Fishbone, Suicidal T members
Hardcore/Punk Rock/Reggae Super Group
Launches World Tour This Fall In California
Norwood Fischer by Jake Krolick |
Are you ready for the ferocious punk/ metal lines of bass guitarist Norwood Fisher of Fishbone? For the snarling blasts of thrash metal and virtuoso guitar leads provided by Rocky George of Suicidal Tendencies? Pounding tribal drum/ metal rhythms from D.H. Peligro of the Dead Kennedys? The jaw-dropping stage performance and vocal range of Lyon Rowland of Hawaiian Lyon Human Rights? These talented musicians come together to form the super group Mr. Green All-Stars, who are launching their world tour across seven continents this October, beginning in their home state of California.
Mr. Green All-Stars describes themselves as “misfits of the world who believe in freedom of expression—no matter what the cost.” The members of this super group are known for their unique, energetic hybrid of punk rock and reggae, with lyrics that address political and human rights issues, as well as their incredibly skilled musicianship. Their high-speed music evokes the world of action sports, as well as a sense of anarchy and freedom, and their blend of shout-along melodies and driving hooks encourages crowds to join in at their performances.
The Mr. Green All-Stars announced their first album, Seeing is Believing, in 2006. H.R. of Bad Brains contributed vocals to four tracks, including the Rolling Stones’ cover “She’s A Rainbow,” and he will also lend his unique punk rock/ reggae vocal style as a guest performer on the 2009 tour. The tour’s second guest star, Jamaican engineer and dub originator The Scientist, also co-engineered the All-Stars’ album, along with Dave Aaron, engineer for Snoop Dogg and Sublime.
Mr. Green All-Stars plan to release their second album, You Can’t Put Me In a Box, in 2010. In the meantime, they’re kicking off their “Seeing is Believing” world tour with performances at Canes in San Diego and The Dub Club in Echo Park, Los Angeles in October 2009.
