JamBase Questionnaire: Chatham County Line

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights in the jam scene (and beyond). Last time we heard from Truth & Salvage Co., and this time we visit with a bright light on the rock scene.

A lot of the most talented folks toil away without drawing much attention. The work is more important than the spotlight, and the end results have possess solidity and endurance fame whores will never know. North Carolina’s fabulous Chatham County Line has consistently cranked out some of the best Americana of the past decade. Though often seen as a bluegrass outfit by ill informed sources, CCL have huge gobs of pop smarts and rock subtext inside their acoustic leaning, twang-inflected sound.

Their fifth release, Wildwood (arriving July 13 on Yep Roc), is their first self-produced effort and shows more than ever that Chatham County Line is dedicated to making great music, regardless of what anyone else calls it. Carried along by the bone deep lilt of guitarist-singer-songwriter Dave Wilson, Wildwood (and the rest of their catalogue) represents what happens when a band really knows how to play their instruments and keeps their ears wide-open to the entire American musical landscape. Anyone smitten by Levon Helm, Yonder Mountain String Band, Hot Rize, Leftover Salmon and the like is cheating themselves to miss out on CCL. (Dennis Cook)

Here’s what Dave Wilson had to say to our inquiries.

Chatham County Line by Bergen Paul Bernhard

An architect

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
Where half the audience could care less at the beginning and then nobody wants you to stop by the end.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
I’m kind of a private person.

A set of drums played by Zeke Hutchins (Tift Merritt, Johnny Irion)

Neil Young’s Harvest Moon

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Some French joint in Pittsburgh. Going back there in a few weeks!

Virginia

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Anything with the name “Lance” on the package.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
If I’m freshly showered with a cup of coffee in the morning, it’s The Beatles. If I’m rolling a smoke with a cold glass of beer in the evening, it’s the Stones.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
A SAS flight landing on a sheet of ice and snow – with me in it.

FloydFest 9: Helm Grace Potter, RRE, Galactic

FloydFest 9 To Feature: Levon Helm, Grace Potter, Railroad Earth, Galactic & More

Levon Helm

If the first FloydFest ever, 9 years ago, was “groundbreaking” in its genre-defying globally-infused lineup (not to mention its meteoric rise from the humble one-stoplight-town of Floyd, Virginia) FloydFest 9, in 2010, is still breaking ground.

FloydFest re-images itself annually, unveiling new graphic artwork and a thematic tag line every December, with the advent of ticket sales for the new season (2009 was “Revival,” 2008 “A Family Affair”), and this year’s theme of “Breaking Ground” seems to have both literal and metaphoric meaning. Metaphoric in the sense that in its near-decade of existence, this festival has been nurtured and tended, willed into full flowery fruition, by the grassroots energies of its faithful followers, and literal in the sense that, with a strong emphasis this year on performance art, patrons will gasp in awe at the “dazzling public spectacle of daredevil acrobatics, pyrotechnics, and mastery of light, air and fire” that best describes Flam Chen theatre, a performance company based in Tucson, Arizona, that will be showcasing their considerable skills throughout the four day festival.

Over the years FloydFest has grown to near-capacity of its 80-acre venue off the Federally-owned Blue Ridge Parkway – accommodating more than 12,000 patrons and featuring no less than eight stages of music. The beautifully timber framed “Dreaming Creek” main stage will this year host the Grammy award winner for best Traditional Folk album (and long time drummer and frequent vocalist for The Band) Levon Helm, as well as Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, recently named one of the “Best New Bands of 2010″ by Rolling Stone magazine, as well as festival favorites Railroad Earth, to name a few. Throughout the weekend, action on other stages, which include an equally beautiful timber framed “Hillholler” stage (which sits delightfully at the bottom of a natural bowl), a “Blue Ridge to Bayou” dance tent, a funky “Beer and Wine Garden Stage,” a “Global Village” stage, and a traditional Appalachian “Workshop Porch,” range from the likes of the funk/jazz trio Soulive, to west African instrumentalists Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni ba, with a multitude of the hottest up-and-coming acts like Deer Tick, Low Anthem, Cornmeal, and a score of others sandwiched in between.

FloydFest’s full 2010 roster includes:
The Levon Helm Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Galactic featuring Corey Henry of The Rebirth Brass Band, Railroad Earth, JJ Grey & Mofro, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Soulive, Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni ba, Konono No1, Deer Tick, Tift Merritt, The Low Anthem, Hackensaw Boys, Cornmeal, Eric Krasno & Chapter 2, Pimps of Joytime, Mountain Heart, Flam Chen, Budos Band, Joe Pug, Bearfoot, Rockridge Brothers, WIYOS, Solas, Spiral, Rising Appalachia, Dangermuffin, Miss Tess & the Bon Ton Parade, Christabel & the Jons, Boulder Acoustic Society, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Packway Handle Band, Alexis P Suter Band, Soulhound, Two Man Gentleman Band, Butch Robins’ Imagicnation, The Mantras, Sol Driven Train, William Walter & Co, Thunderdrums, Papadosio, Folk Soul Revival, The Barefoot Movement, Kat Mills, 3 Minute Lovin, Adrienne Young, The Steel Wheels, American Dumpster, Dirty Horse, Blue Mule, Scintillation Fire Troupe, Old Sledge, Kill Basa Bill’s Roadshow, JP Harris & the Tough Choices, The Hot Seats, Dance Afire, White Top Mountain Band, My Radio, Sauerkraut Band, Danny Knicely, Farm Use Only, Hoorah Cloggers, JuggleThis!, Rocknoceros, Miss Kitty’s Society for Wayward Cosmonauts, Charles Eisenstein, Dharma Rebel w/ Jason Murphy, James Justin & Co., and Musicians of the Crooked Road.

Chatham County Line: New Album

ONE OF THE FINEST YOUNG, STRING-MINDED BANDS TODAY RETURNS WITH NEW STUDIO EFFORT

Chatham County Line

Chatham County Line will release their next studio album Wildwood on July 13, 2010 via Yep Roc Records.

North Carolina’s Chatham County Line has always had chops. They’ve always been dedicated. They’ve always been loved and respected. But they haven’t always had an identity. Too progressive for bluegrass traditionalists, too rowdy for Americana sticklers and yet too traditional – they are all acoustic, singing and playing around one microphone – for alt-country’s brash guitars, the band has leapt from fencepost to fencepost along the line between musical genres. With their last critically acclaimed studio effort, the immaculate Chris Stamey-produced IV, CCL began to shed its self-consciousness.

If IV was the butterfly emerging from its cocoon, then Wildwood is its first true flight. For the first time Dave Wilson (guitar, lead vocals), Chandler Hold (banjo), John Teer (mandolin, fiddle) and Greg Readling (bass) felt free to create totally unencumbered by classifications. “We don’t care anymore what type of music people consider us. I just focus on writing the best lyrics and melodies I can,” says Wilson. Picking up the notion, Holt continues, “I think it is as simple as people know a Chatham County Line song when they hear it. It has something to do with a strong melody and an honest vocal approach.”

That said, will you hear CCL totally abandon their signature bluegrass workouts or pick up Les Pauls? Hardly, but what you will hear on Wildwood, and for the first time on any CCL album, are drums. So tastefully applied by Zeke Hutchins (Tift Merritt) that you might not even notice them at first, the drums provide the steady yet unobtrusive bottom end to Wildwood. It’s not a shocking move for a band that many fans already refer to as “a rock band with acoustic instruments.”
