Live At Hammersmith Odeon

The second coming of Black
Sabbath
began in 1979 when founding members Tony Iommi, Terry “Geezer” Butler, and
Bill Ward were joined by Ronnie James Dio, who added his fiery and powerful voice to the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame group’s crushing mix of iconic riffs, gloomy grooves and doom-soaked imagery. The Dio-
fronted line-up would release two iconic metal albums in consecutive years—1980′s Heaven And Hell and
1981′s Mob Rules (with Vinny Appice on drums)—before arriving at London’s Hammersmith Odeon
in January of 1982 for one of their most legendary shows.

Black Sabbath: Live At Hammersmith Odeon spotlights Sabbath as they storm through 14 of the
Dio-era’s best including “Neon Knights,” “Heaven And Hell,” “Children Of The Sea” and “Voodoo.” The band also
performs several pre-Dio classics including “Paranoid,” “Iron Man,” and a white-hot version of “War Pigs.” This epic

Sat Eye Candy: Eagles of Death Metal

THE BOY’S NO GOOD BUT HIS BOOGIE IS FABULOUS!

In our 2008 interview with Eagles of Death Metal‘s Jesse Hughes he said, “I admit to my own cliches. I always say, ‘This ain’t no Bible study.’ I ain’t here to save the whales or to get Ticketmaster to lower their prices. I’m here to have a good time.” That’s precisely what EODM did last evening at the 10th Annual Bone Bash in Mountain View, CA, wiggling and writhing and making rock ‘n’ roll dirty ‘n’ fun. While we await the next studio album and a full tour behind it, here’s a six-pack to tide us over. Damn, these cats are a blast and a half! (Dennis Cook)

Metal fatigue in old aircraft: Flying rivets

A new technique that listens for cracks in ageing aircraft

WHEN they were built, no one thought they would fly for so long. But fitted with new engines and avionics, aircraft can be kept going for a very long time. The average age of the world’s airliners is more than ten years, with some passenger jets 25 years old or more. Military planes are more geriatric: the Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopter entered service 31 years ago and the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy 40 years back. Both are still going strong. Some Boeing KC-135 aerial-refuelling planes, which are based on the venerable 707, have been flying for over 50 years. Engineers reckon they could still be in the air when they are 80.

One thing that does ground old aircraft is the impending failure of their aluminium structure from metal fatigue. This begins in parts that are subjected to repeated strains, such as where the wings join the fuselage. Constant flexing of the structure concentrates stress, which leads to microscopic cracks. These cracks become more numerous and eventually large enough for the structure to fail. Aircraft engineers know a lot about how these cracks progress and keep an eye on them in routine overhauls. Nevertheless, they can be difficult and costly to find. Apart from careful visual inspection, techniques like X-rays and ultrasonic probes are also used. …

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth Anthrax Worldwide Broadcast

JUNE 22 CONCERT IN BULGARIA BROADCAST WORLDWIDE

The “Big Four” – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax – are bringing their historic European tour to the global stage by beaming the event via satellite to movie theaters around the world in a special HD cinematic event. These four acts broke out of the underground thrash movement in the 1980s to dominate the metal world. Despite huge demand, these musical giants have never shared the same stage until now.

The June 22 concert from the tour’s stop of the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria will air the same day in over 450 theaters in more than 140 markets in the U.S., as well as beamed into theaters in Europe, Canada and Latin America. Delayed screenings are planned in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Tickets for “The Big Four: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax” go on sale starting today, Friday, May 21 in the U.S. and internationally starting Friday, May 28 at participating theater box offices and at www.thebigfourlive.com.

In December 2009, the bands announced that they would be joining forces to take part in the traveling Sonisphere Festival for only seven shows across Europe. Lars Ulrich of Metallica says, “Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s Big Four would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theater near you in High Definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!”

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says, “Damn, as if this Big Four tour wasn’t exciting enough now we get to be on the big screen worldwide! Metal at the movies, two big horns up! It is unbelievably gratifying that this means so much to the metal community around the globe. Get your tix, grab some popcorn and get ready to bang your head!”

Declares Slayer’s Kerry King, “I can’t believe someone didn’t make this happen 15 years ago! The fans finally get what they want. I think it’s awesome!”

Says Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, “The magnitude of this event hasn’t really sunk in yet, and I am thrilled to know that people around the planet will be able to walk into a movie theater and experience the greatest line up of Heavy Metal in the history of the world!”

Brian Posehn: “More Metal Than You”

METAL WISDOM AND HUMOR FROM A MAN WHO KNOWS

Comedian Brian Posehn released Fart And Wiener Jokes, his second album on independent metal label Relapse Records, on April 27. In addition to new routines, the album includes two musical tracks, “More Metal Than You” and a cover of Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler.” Posehn recorded these songs with the help of a number of metal all-stars including Scott Ian (Anthrax), Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed, Kingdom of Sorrow), Mark Morton (Lamb of God), John Tempesta (Exodus, The Cult), Russ Parrish (Steel Panther), and more.

Here’s the audio of one of the funniest things to come across the JamBase virtual desk in a spell. Dude is lethally funny, and he’s be happy to smoke out with you after a show. And his cat’s name is Manowar and he burned a church in Norway. Yeah, Posehn is more metal than usÂ…and you!

Bonus Posehn! Here’s his spot-on music lesson from Live: In Nerd Rage.
