We’re honored to be able to once again celebrate the soul of America as only New Orleans and the Jazz Fest can.”

The 2011 Festival will also host the largest celebration of Haitian culture in the U.S. since the devastating earthquake

of the local traditions and customs owe their roots to this complex Caribbean country. The Jazz Fest is proud and
honored to host the icons of Haitian music and culture including Wyclef Jean, Tabou Combo, RAM, Boukman
Eksperyans, Emeline Michel, Djakout #1, DJA-Rara and Ti-Coca & Wanga Negès. The many cultural connections will
be illustrated throughout all aspects of this year’s Festival. Some highlights include traditional Vodou drumming
performances, folk crafts demonstrations led by visiting master artisans and rara band DJA-Rara parading
throughout the Fair Grounds. With the support of the Green Family Foundation, the program will also include a
series of scholar-led panel discussions entitled Haiti & New Orleans: Cultural Crossroads as well as a listening station
featuring excerpts from the Grammy nominated recordings of Dr. Alan Lomax made in Haiti for the Library of
Congress in 1936-1937.

Tickets for the Festival, which takes place at the Fair Grounds Race Course, went on sale today. A limited number of
discount ticket packages including tickets to each day of a particular weekend of the Festival will be offered. Ticket
packages purchased for all three days of the first weekend (April 29, 30 & May 1) will be $120 ($40 per day), while

included in each package are day-specific.) Advance single day Jazz Fest tickets are only $45; the gate price is $60.
Children’s tickets (ages 2 – 10) are still only $5 and are available at the gate only. Single day tickets to Jazz Fest are

Earthdance: Evolution of a Legacy

By: Xochi Raye

The 14th Annual Earthdance Festival will take place September 17-19 at Black Oak Ranch for the very last time. You can check out more details on this gathering here, which includes headliners Spearhead, Matisyahu, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave, EOTO and many more.

Every September for the past eight years, the Earthdance Peace Festival in Laytonville CA has drawn folks by the thousands to the legendary Black Oak Ranch for a weekend of celebration, music, dance, art and participation with an international prayer for peace and healing. Earthdance Laytonville is the hub event of the global Earthdance peace festival, which unites over 350 locations in 65 countries each year. Often described as a festival that combines the artistic liberation of Burning Man with the socially responsible conscience of the Oregon Country Fair, the festival has gained international recognition as one of the best “boutique” festivals on the west coast of the USA, with sell out shows each year. The festival has now outgrown itself and will be moving to a new location for 2012.

Prayer For Peace – Earthdance ’09 by Michael Buchanan

“To me it feels like a really positive change,” says Earthdance founder Chris Deckker. “If we can embrace change and transition, there is a lot of room for powerful growth.”

Earthdance began as a one-day international event in 1997, using the universal medium of music and dance to unite people across the world in support of global peace and sustainability. The climax of the global event is a synchronized prayer for peace that is played by every location at the same time. The event has grown from 18 locations in 1997 to over 350 locations in 65 countries.

The first California Earthdance Festival took place in 2001 on the Yakeama Native American Reservation near Santa Rosa. In 2003, Earthdance found its home at the Black Oak Ranch, and at the same time, Deckker partnered with Bob Barsotti, one of Bill Graham’s production managers who was pivotal in producing The Grateful Dead touring phenomena. The ranch is also home to the legendary “Hog Farm” community, who began their legacy in the 60s, founded by Wavy Gravy, the infamous clown activist. The Hog Farm is considered to be one of America’s longest running counterculture communities, and is best known for their involvement with the Woodstock Music Festival. Earthdance Laytonville became a wonderful merging of 60s counterculture energy with the evolving technology generation.

So, it was inevitable that this land, coupled with the intentional container that Earthdance creates, would foster a certain magic of its own kind. From devotional Sufis chanting in the middle of the night to internationally renowned DJs and major headline acts, Earthdance Laytonville offers something for all. Past highlights include the “Drums for Peace” in 2005. That year Earthdance broke the Guinness World Record for the largest drum circle, giving away thousands of drums to those who registered for the event. Mickey Hart and some of the world’s best percussionists facilitated a prayer that literally shook the wings of an airplane overhead. The pilot flying the plane was filming the drum circle, and commented that with every beat he could feel his wings vibrating. The only other time that a pilot has recorded his wings shaking was when bombs were being dropped.

Earthdance ’09 by Michael Buchanan

The largest ever Celtic Spiral Dance was led in 2006 by Suzanne Sterling of Reclaiming, a Pagan Roots organization out of San Francisco, and in 2007 the international prayer included a global Om Circle with the intention of healing of our planetary waters. Earthdance was also the first West Coast festival to present an “elders wisdom council” featuring first nation and counterculture elders from across the world. This year the international prayer will be facilitated by Grandmother Agnes, Baker Pilgrim of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers Council, and Chief Oren Lyons of the Onondaga Nation with the theme being “Honoring Our Traditions.”

Workshops offered throughout the weekend include yoga, permaculture, ancient forms of dance and healing and Earthskills workshops, where teaching of traditional indigenous skills such as cord weaving, hide tanning and natural fire making will be shared.

To make this a “grand farewell” year to remember the festival will present an amazing line up of artists featuring, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Matisyahu, Zap Mama, Ivan Neville’s Dumstaphunk, The Yard Dogs Road Show, Kinky and many others. The festival will feature five stages of entertainment representing all music genres including a dedicated electronica stage and all-night devotional music.

“It will be bittersweet to say goodbye to the Black Oak Ranch,” reflects Deckker ” It has been wonderful to have such a stunning and vibrant place as a home for the past eight years. So much magic happened there! This is truly the end of a legacy, but I am really excited for these changes, and to see what the next chapter for Earthdance will bring.”

FAREWELL TO BLACK OAK RANCH

Earthdance ’09 by Michael Buchanan

The 14th annual Earthdance Festival will take place September 17-19 at the renowned Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville, CA, a property rich in native history and old growth oak trees. The ranch has been home to Earthdance for the past 8 years, but due to expanding audiences, the festival will be moving to a larger facility for 2011. Often described as a festival that combines the artistic liberation of Burning Man with the socially responsible conscience of the Oregon Country Fair, the festival has gained international recognition as one of the best “boutique” festivals on the West Coast.

This year’s lineup includes:

Michael Franti and Spearhead
Matisyahu

Ivan Neville’s Dumstaphunk
Kinky
Trombone Shorty
Beats Antique
Rootz Underground
Yard Dogs Road Show
Lyrics Born
Gift Of Gab
Delhi 2 Dublin

And many more

For 2010, Earthdance Northern California will unite with over 350 locations in 60 countries across the world. To make this year a “grand farewell” to remember, the festival will present an incredible lineup of conscious musicians, visual artists, DJ’s, speakers and activists, who believe in a sustainable future for our planet. Working with the theme of “Unity In Diversity,” the festival will host five music stages and will feature high profile conscious artists from many genres of the international music scene. Also included will be an indigenous elders council, made up of indigenous elders from many nations, who will share wisdom and sacred ceremony.

An important part of the festival will be a compelling educational component called the “Activist Alley,” where festival patrons can interact with both local and international non-profit groups. These organizations will share information and workshops on relevant global and local issues, inspiring local participants to take a stand for the future of our planet.

A highlight of the festival will be a synchronized global link up, taking place on Saturday the 18th, when at 4 pm (PST), Earthdance California will synchronize with over 350 locations in 60 countries. At this precise moment, a specially created song called the “Prayer for Peace” will be played in every location at the same time. The festival will also feature a wide variety of healthy vendors supplying many types of international foods and eco wares. Shaded camping and hot showers are also available to festival attendees.

Part proceeds from the festival will be donated to the Earthdance non-profit, A California based 501c3 organization.

2009. “Music is sunshine. It gives us new energy and a stronger sense of purpose. You can’t hold it in your hands,
smell it, taste it or even see it, yet somehow just coming together and feeling these little vibrations that tickle our
eardrums can somehow lift us all up out of our most difficult moments in life to unimaginable heights,” says
Franti.

The band began recording in Jamaica with legendary producers Sly & Robbie as well as in Franti’s home in
Bali and hometown of San Francisco. With the record still not complete, Franti decided to bring a mobile studio on
the road with him while he toured with John Mayer this past winter. The album was finished in dressing rooms and
hotel rooms along the way with Franti playing songs he had recorded earlier in the day to the audience that evening.

Franti & Spearhead will be touring throughout the summer.

Happening Now: Bonnaroo

TWEETS AND TWITPICS FOR YOU AND BY YOU!

Entrance Band

Even if you’re not headed to Manchester, TN this weekend for the 2010 edition of
Bonnaroo, you can keep up with the progress of people’s filthy feet and catch
glimpses and clever comments direct from the dusty/muddy fields via JamBase’s Bonnaroo Twitter Feed.

Music is already pumping in the Troo Music Lounge and other smaller bar/tent venues and
the main stages fire up at 4:15 pm, EST, with The Postelles and
Fanfarlo
and The Entrance
Band
at 4:30 pm. And some enterprising Lotus fan should
be uploading thoughts and images from their late night set by the time it wraps around 1
am tonight.

Be safe out there. Drink LOTS of water. Bring your umbrellas and rain ponchos (dark
clouds are looming over the fest presently). And most importantly, check back with
JamBase for fresh photos from the intrepid Dave Vann and Wesley Hodges’ on-site commentary
with a full recap next week.

In the meantime, those at Bonnaroo or waiting in traffic to get through the gates and
check out our 2010
Bonnaroo Preview
for helpful suggestions on how to maximize their ‘Roo.

For those not fortunate enough to make it to this year’s Bonnaroo, fear not as select
performances will be webcast on YouTube and NPR.
