British duo Gemma Spofforth and Liam Tancock will be looking to add to Britain’s medal tally in the swimming competition at the World Championships.
Spofforth, 21, qualified second fastest for the women’s 100m backstroke final which also features team-mate Lizzie Simmonds who was joint seventh fastest.
Tancock edged out world record holder Aaron Peirsol to take the last spot in Tuesday’s evenly-matched men’s final.
United States’ Michael Phelps goes for his second gold in the 200m freestyle.
Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, faces an epic task to land his second title in Rome with new 400m free world record holder and champion Paul Biedermann qualifying fastest for the 200m final.
"It’s going to be good," said 24-year-old Phelps, who is aiming to win six golds at the Championships. "Hopefully I’m going to get some rest today and be ready to make it a race."

Meanwhile, the American was second fastest in the heats of the 200m butterfly early on Tuesday behind Poland’s Pawel Korzeniowski.
Elsewhere, 400m freestyle silver medallist Jo Jackson made it through to Tuesday’s 200m free semi-finals after winning her heat, with fellow Briton Caitlin McClatchey joining her after qualifying in ninth place.
David Davies set a new British record in the heats of the 800m freestyle.
Davies, who won silver in the 10km open water event in Beijing last summer, qualified fourth fastest overall for Wednesday’s final.
And Britain’s Michael Rock reached Tuesday’s semi-finals of the 200m butterfly after coming ninth fastest overall in the heats.</p
